    Thermodynamic Gravity and the Schrodinger Equation

    We adopt a 'thermodynamical' formulation of Mach's principle that the rest mass of a particle in the Universe is a measure of its long-range collective interactions with all other particles inside the horizon. We consider all particles in the Universe as a 'gravitationally entangled' statistical ensemble and apply the approach of classical statistical mechanics to it. It is shown that both the Schrodinger equation and the Planck constant can be derived within this Machian model of the universe. The appearance of probabilities, complex wave functions, and quantization conditions is related to the discreetness and finiteness of the Machian ensemble.Comment: Minor corrections, the version accepted by Int.     Comparison of micro-array profiling in senescing iris and carnation flowers

    Gene expression profiles of cut Iris and carnation flowers were studied using cDNA microarrays. The cDNA libraries were enriched for flower-specific genes by subtraction with cDNA from subtending growing tissue. This strategy is meant to eliminate most household genes and numerous genes that are not specific for petals and senescence. In Iris, we spotted about 1400 clones and in carnation about 2000, of which 220 and 90 clones respectively were (partially) sequenced. Unexpectedly, during Iris senescence up-regulation was observed for many genes that previously had been characterized as being defence-related. Although such genes were also found in carnation, their relative contribution to the changes in expression seemed less pronounced. Another remarkable result was the limited number of known ethylene-related genes in carnation that were detected. Among those found was ACO1. Other ethylene-related genes may have been lost in the subtraction; and ACO1 seems specific for the ethylene climacteric. No ethylene-related genes were found in Iris. Since ethylene does not regulate petal senescence in Iris this is no surprise. Some similarities were found between Iris and carnation. In both species a considerable proportion of the up-regulated genes encode enzymes that are involved in the degradation of lipids, protein, and complex carbohydrates such as cell walls. Several genes involved in signal transduction and in transcription were observed to change expression levels in both species, but none were the same in both species, as judged from the limited sequence information. A novel EIN3 (EIL) transcription factor was discovered in carnation. The expression pattern of some putative transcription factors in carnation were expressed independently of ethylene treatment, and may be candidates for early regulators of traits such as ethylene senstivity.     Single gluino production in the R-parity lepton number violating MSSM at the LHC

    We examine the RpR_{p}-violating signal of single gluino production associated with a charged lepton or neutrino at the large hadron collider (LHC), in the model of R-parity relaxed supersymmetric model. If the parameters in the /Rp{\rlap/R}_p supersymmetric interactions are not too small, and the mass of gluino is considered in the range from several GeV (as the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle) to 800 GeV, the cross section of the single gluino production via Drell-Yan processes can be in the order of 102∌10310^2 \sim 10^3 femto barn, and that via gluon fusion in the order of 10−1∌10310^{-1} \sim 10^3 femto barn. If the gluino decay can be well detected in the CERN LHC, this process provides a prospective way to probe supersymmetry and RpR_p violation.Comment: LaTex, 22 pages, 5 EPS file

    Phocine Distemper Outbreak, the Netherlands, 2002

    During the 2002 phocine distemper epidemic, 2,284 seals, primarily harbor seals (Phoca vitulina), were found stranded along the Dutch coast. Stranding pattern varied with age, sex, state of decomposition, wind, and location. Cumulative proportion of deaths (54%) was comparable to that in the first reported epidemic in 1988

    Viral Encephalitis in England, 1989–1998: What Did We Miss?

    We analyzed hospitalizations in England from April 1, 1989, to March 31, 1998, and identified approximately 700 cases, 46 fatal, from viral encephalitis that occurred during each year; most (60%) were of unknown etiology. Of cases with a diagnosis, the largest proportion was herpes simplex encephalitis. Using normal and Poisson regression, we identified six possible clusters of unknown etiology. Over 75% of hospitalizations are not reported through the routine laboratory and clinical notification systems, resulting in underdiagnosis of viral encephalitis in England. Current surveillance greatly underascertains incidence of the disease and existence of clusters; in general, outbreaks are undetected. Surveillance systems must be adapted to detect major changes in epidemiology so that timely control measures can be implemented

    Evidence of Color Coherence Effects in W+jets Events from ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV

    We report the results of a study of color coherence effects in ppbar collisions based on data collected by the D0 detector during the 1994-1995 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, at a center of mass energy sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. Initial-to-final state color interference effects are studied by examining particle distribution patterns in events with a W boson and at least one jet. The data are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence implementations and to an analytic modified-leading-logarithm perturbative calculation based on the local parton-hadron duality hypothesis.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures.     Search for Single Top Production at LEP

    Single top production in e+e- annihilations is searched for in data collected by the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies from 189 to 209 GeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 634 pb-1. Investigating hadronic and semileptonic top decays, no evidence of single top production at LEP is obtained and upper limits on the single top cross section as a function of the centre-of-mass energy are derived. Limits on possible anomalous couplings, as well as on the scale of contact interactions responsible for single top production are determined
