The early medieval origin of Perth, Scotland
The radiocarbon results (and Bayesian modeling) of 15 samples of carbonized food residues removed from the external surface of rim sherds of cooking pots indicate that shellyware pottery first appeared in Perth, Scotland, around cal AD 9101020 (95% probability) and that it had disappeared by cal AD 10201140 (95% probability). Previously, it had been suggested that this pottery could not date to before AD 1150. These data, together with 14C analyses carried out on leather artifacts and a sample of wattle from a ditch lining, also demonstrate that there was occupation in Perth about 100 yr or more prior to the granting of royal burgh status to Perth in the 1120s
Testing Broken U(1) Symmetry in a Two-Component Atomic Bose-Einstein Condensate
We present a scheme for determining if the quantum state of a small trapped
Bose-Einstein condensate is a state with well defined number of atoms, a Fock
state, or a state with a broken U(1) gauge symmetry, a coherent state. The
proposal is based on the observation of Ramsey fringes. The population
difference observed in a Ramsey fringe experiment will exhibit collapse and
revivals due to the mean-field interactions. The collapse and revival times
depend on the relative strength of the mean-field interactions for the two
components and the initial quantum state of the condensate.Comment: 20 Pages RevTex, 3 Figure
Urban Renewal and Industry Analysis
22 pagesThe overall goal of this course was to enhance the attractiveness of La Pine for its citizens, visitors, and businesses. This goal was broken into three primary projects focusing on Urban Renewal, industry viability, and workforce evaluation.
The overall objective for the first project was to provide best practices for Urban Renewal processes in the short and long term. Short term recommendations include implementing a twelve-step Storefront Loan Program process and a two-phase minor enhancement project. Long term recommendations focus on implementing four best practices for large scale property transformation as well as creating a public art fund. Applying these recommendations to La Pineâs Urban Renewal plans can provide guidance and sustainability for future downtown development.
The overall objective of the second project was to provide detailed industry benchmarking and rank the attractiveness of each industrial sector within La Pine. The teams recommend pursuing moderate- to high-potential industries including Wood Products Manufacturing, Food Processing, and Outdoor Gear and Apparel Manufacturing.
The objective of the third project was to conduct a workforce asset analysis and recommend a ranking of industries where La Pine should focus its workforce development efforts. Based on their industry workforce assessment, the team recommends pursuing Specialty Foods Processing, Cross-Laminated Timber, and Cabinet Manufacturing. Both the second and third projects propose that La Pine pursue viable industries in alignment with the cityâs workforce goals to ensure sustainable economic development
Feasibility of Electrified Propulsion for Ultra-Efficient Commercial Aircraft Final Report
MIT, Aurora Flight Sciences, and USC have collaborated to assess the feasibility of electric, hybridelectric, and turbo-electric propulsion for ultra-efficient commercial transportation. The work has drawn on the team expertise in disciplines related to aircraft design, propulsion-airframe integration, electric machines and systems, engineering system design, and optimization. A parametric trade space analysis has been carried out to assess vehicle performance across a range of transport missions and propulsion architectures to establish how electrified propulsion systems scale. An optimization approach to vehicle conceptual design modeling was taken to enable rapid multidisciplinary design space exploration and sensitivity analysis. The results of the analysis indicate vehicle aero-propulsive integration benefits enabled by electrification are required to offset the increased weight and loss associated with the electric system and achieve enhanced performance; the report describes the conceptual configurations than can offer such enhancements. The main contribution of the present work is the definition of electric vehicle design attributes for potential efficiency improvements at different scales. Based on these results, key areas for future research are identified, and extensions to the trade space analysis suitable for higher fidelity electrified commercial aircraft design and analysis have been developed
How to humiliate and shame: A reporter's guide to the power of the mugshot
This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published in Social Semiotics, 24(1), 56-87, 2014, copyright Taylor & Francis, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/The judicial photograph â the âmugshotâ â is a ubiquitous and instantly recognisable form, appearing in the news media, on the internet, on book covers, law enforcement noticeboards and in many other mediums. This essay attempts to situate the mugshot in a historical and theoretical context to explain the explicit and implicit meaning of the genre as it has developed, focussing in particular on their use in the UK media in late modernity. The analysis is based on the author's reflexive practice as a journalist covering crime in the national news media for 30 years and who has used mugshots to illustrate stories for their explicit and specific content. The author argues that the visual limitations of the standardised âhead and shouldersâ format of the mugshot make it a robust subject for analysing the changing meaning of images over time. With little variation in the image format, arguments for certain accreted layers of signification are easier to make. Within a few years of the first appearance of the mugshot form in the mid-19th century, it was adopted and adapted as a research tool by scientists and criminologists. While the positivist scientists claimed empirical objectivity we can now see that mugshots played a part in the construction of subjective notions of âthe otherâ, âthe lesserâ or âsub-humanâ on the grounds of class, race and religion. These dehumanising ideas later informed the theorists and bureaucrats of National Socialist ideology from the 1920s to 1940s. The author concludes that once again the mugshot has become, in certain parts of the media, a signifier widely used to exclude or deride certain groups. In late modernity, the part of the media that most use mugshots â the tabloid press and increasingly tabloid TV â is part of a neo-liberal process that, in a conscious commercial appeal to the paying audience, seeks to separate rather than unify wider society
Mining State-Based Models from Proof Corpora
Interactive theorem provers have been used extensively to reason about
various software/hardware systems and mathematical theorems. The key challenge
when using an interactive prover is finding a suitable sequence of proof steps
that will lead to a successful proof requires a significant amount of human
intervention. This paper presents an automated technique that takes as input
examples of successful proofs and infers an Extended Finite State Machine as
output. This can in turn be used to generate proofs of new conjectures. Our
preliminary experiments show that the inferred models are generally accurate
(contain few false-positive sequences) and that representing existing proofs in
such a way can be very useful when guiding new ones.Comment: To Appear at Conferences on Intelligent Computer Mathematics 201
-BaBO deep UV monolithic walk-off compensating tandem
The generation of watt-level cw narrow-linewidth sources at specific deep UV
wavelengths corresponding to atomic cooling transitions usually employs
external cavity-enhanced second-harmonic generation (SHG) of moderate-power
visible lasers in birefringent materials. In this work, we investigate a novel
approach to cw deep-UV generation by employing the low-loss BBO in a monolithic
walkoff-compensating structure [Zondy {\it{et al}}, J. Opt. Soc. Am. B
{\bf{20}} (2003) 1675] to simultaneously enhance the effective nonlinear
coefficient while minimizing the UV beam ellipticity under tight focusing. As a
preliminary step to cavity-enhanced operation, and in order to apprehend the
design difficulties stemming from the extremely low acceptance angle of BBO, we
investigate and analyze the single-pass performance of a mm monolithic
walk-off compensating structure made of 2 optically-contacted BBO plates cut
for type-I critically phase-matched SHG of a cw nm dye laser. As
compared with a bulk crystal of identical length, a sharp UV efficiency
enhancement factor of 1.65 has been evidenced with the tandem structure, but at
nm from the targeted fundamental wavelength, highlighting the
sensitivity of this technique when applied to a highly birefringent material
such as BBO. Solutions to angle cut residual errors are identified so as to
match accurately more complex periodic-tandem structure performance to any
target UV wavelength, opening the prospect for high-power, good beam quality
deep UV cw laser sources for atom cooling and trapping.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Opt. Commu
Social and cultural origins of motivations to volunteer a comparison of university students in six countries
Although participation in volunteering and motivations to volunteer (MTV) have received substantial attention on the national level, particularly in the US, few studies have compared and explained these issues across cultural and political contexts. This study compares how two theoretical perspectives, social origins theory and signalling theory, explain variations in MTV across different countries. The study analyses responses from a sample of 5794 students from six countries representing distinct institutional contexts. The findings provide strong support for signalling theory but less so for social origins theory. The article concludes that volunteering is a personal decision and thus is influenced more at the individual level but is also impacted to some degree by macro-level societal forces
Quasi-spin Model for Macroscopic Quantum Tunnelling between Two Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates
The macroscopic quantum tunneling between two coupled Bose-Einstein
condensates (BEC) (radio-frequency coupled two-component BECs or two BECs
confined in a double-well potential) is mapped onto the tunneling of an
uniaxial spin with an applied magnetic field. The tunneling exponent is
calculated with an imaginary-time path-integral method. In the limit of low
barrier, the dependence of tunneling exponent on the system parameters is
obtained, and the crossover temperature from thermal regime to quantum regime
is estimated. The detailed information about the tunnelling will give help to
control population conversion between coupled BECs and realize quantum
computation with coupled BECs.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Phys.Rev.
