    High atmospheric horizontal resolution eliminates the wind-driven coastal warm bias in the southeastern tropical Atlantic

    We investigate the strong warm bias in sea surface temperatures (SST) of the southeastern tropical Atlantic that occurs in most of the current global climate models. We analyse this bias in the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model at different horizontal resolutions ranging from 0.1° to 0.4° in the ocean and 0.5° to 1.8° in the atmosphere. High atmospheric horizontal resolution eliminates the SST bias close to the African coast, due to an improved representation of surface wind-stress near the coast. This improvement affects coastal upwelling and horizontal ocean circulation, as confirmed with dedicated sensitivity experiments. The wind-stress improvements are partly caused by the better represented orography at higher horizontal resolution in the spectral atmospheric model. The reductions of the coastal SST bias obtained through higher horizontal resolution do not, however, translate to a reduction of the large-scale bias extending westward from the African coast into the southeastern tropical Atlantic

    Healthy ageing and home: The perspectives of very old people in five European countries

    This paper reports on in-depth research, using a grounded theory approach, to examine the ways in which very old people perceive healthy ageing in the context of living alone at home within urban settings in five European countries. This qualitative study was part of a cross-national project entitled ENABLE-AGE which examined the relationship between home and healthy ageing. Interviews explored the notion of healthy ageing, the meaning and importance of home, conceptualisations of independence and autonomy and links between healthy ageing and home. Data analysis identified five ways in which older people constructed healthy ageing: home and keeping active; managing lifestyles, health and illness; balancing social life; and balancing material and financial circumstances. Older people reflected on their everyday lives at home in terms of being engaged in purposeful, meaningful action and evaluated healthy ageing in relation to the symbolic and practical affordances of the home, contextualised within constructions of their national context. The research suggests that older people perceive healthy ageing as an active achievement, created through individual, personal effort and supported through social ties despite the health, financial and social decline associated with growing older. The physicality and spatiality of home provided the context for establishing and evaluating the notion of healthy ageing, whilst the experienced relationship between home, life history and identity created a meaningful space within which healthy ageing was negotiated

    Sea level changes mechanisms in the MPI-ESM under FAFMIP forcing conditions

    Mechanistic causes for sea level (SL) change patterns are analyzed as they emerge from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) endorsed Flux-Anomaly-Forced Model Intercomparison Project (FAFMIP) coupled climate experiments imposing individual forcing anomalies in wind stress, heatflux and freshwater flux to the Max-Planck-Institute Earth System Model (MPI-ESM). It appears that the heat flux perturbations have the largest effect on the sea level. In contrast, the direct impact of momentum and freshwater flux anomalies on SL anomalies appear to be limited to some region e.g. the Southern Ocean, Arctic Ocean and to some extent the North Pacific and North Atlantic Ocean. We find that thermosteric changes dominate the total SL change over large parts of the global ocean, except north of 60 °N where halosteric changes prevail. An analysis of added and redistributed components of heat and freshwater further suggests that the added component dominates the thermosteric SL and the redistributed component dominates the halosteric SL. Due to feedback processes a superposition of all forcing components together leads to the simulated sea level changes in each individual experiment. As a result, large surface heat flux anomalies over the Atlantic lead to wind stress change outside of the Atlantic through teleconnections, which in turn appear to be the primary driving agent for changes of sea level outside of the Atlantic in all three experiments. The associated wind driven Sverdrup stream function implicates that outside of the Atlantic most of the feedback can be explained by changes in the Sverdrup circulation

    A systematic investigation of human DNA preservation in medieval skeletons

    Ancient DNA (aDNA) analyses necessitate the destructive sampling of archaeological material. Currently, the cochlea, part of the osseous inner ear located inside the petrous pyramid, is the most sought after skeletal element for molecular analyses of ancient humans as it has been shown to yield high amounts of endogenous DNA. However, destructive sampling of the petrous pyramid may not always be possible, particularly in cases where preservation of skeletal morphology is of top priority. To investigate alternatives, we present a survey of human aDNA preservation for each of ten skeletal elements in a skeletal collection from Medieval Germany. Through comparison of human DNA content and quality we confirm best performance of the petrous pyramid and identify seven additional sampling locations across four skeletal elements that yield adequate aDNA for most applications in human palaeogenetics.     A traveling wave Zeeman decelerator

    We developed a new-concept Zeeman decelerator which produces a traveling magnetic trap. Atoms and molecules possessing a magnetic dipole moment, in so-called low field seeking states, are trapped around a node of a propagating wave provided that the initial velocity of the wave matches a velocity populated in the supersonic beam. In addition, three dimensional confinement is achieved by controlling the radial orientation of the trap, which can be done fully independently from its longitudinal motion

    Pion-Lambda-Sigma Coupling Extracted from Hyperonic Atoms

    The latest measurements of the atomic level width in Sigma-hyperonic Pb atom offer the most accurate datum in the region of low-energy Sigma-hyperon physics. Atomic widths are due to the conversion of Sigma-nucleon into Lambda-nucleon. In high angular momentum states this conversion is dominated by the one-pion exchange. A joint analysis of the data of the scattering of negative-Sigma on proton converting into a Lambda and a neutron and of the atomic widths allows to extract a pseudovector pion-hyperon-Sigma coupling constant of 0.048 with a statistical error of +-0.005 and a systematic one of +-0.004. This corresponds to a pseudoscalar coupling constant of 13.3 with a statistical uncertainty of 1.4 and a systematic one of 1.1.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, Use of Revtex.st

    Ruthenacycles and Iridacycles as Catalysts for Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation and Racemisation

    Ruthenacycles, which are easily prepared in a single step by reaction between enantiopure aromatic amines and [Ru(arene)Cl2]2 in the presence of NaOH and KPF6, are very good asymmetric transfer hydrogenation catalysts. A range of aromatic ketones were reduced using isopropanol in good yields with ee’s up to 98%. Iridacycles, which are prepared in similar fashion from [IrCp*Cl2]2 are excellent catalysts for the racemisation of secondary alcohols and chlorohydrins at room temperature. This allowed the development of a new dynamic kinetic resolution of chlorohydrins to the enantiopure epoxides in up to 90% yield and 98% enantiomeric excess (ee) using a mutant of the enzyme Haloalcohol dehalogenase C and an iridacycle as racemisation catalyst.
