A Platform for Partnership: A Technology Review of the Padlet sharing platform.

    Get PDF
Since technology permeates every aspect of contemporary life, just navigating Higher Education (HE) in the 21stcentury makes you, to an extent, tech savvy. However, when looking to technology to assist student/staff partnerships, colleagues need to take their practice beyond Microsoft Office, social media and Photoshop.During a student/staff partnership research project, a student and a higher education professional used the online platformPadlet as their selected medium for collaboration, in order to replicate such of Healys principles of partnership as inclusivity, reciprocity, trust and community (Healy et al., 2014)

Exploring how a ‘Sense of Belonging’ is facilitated at different stages of the student journey in Higher Education.

This paper gives an overview of a study conducted at the University of Winchester to explore students sense of belonging at one particular UK institution. The project was completed in two phases: first, an investigation via a Feedback Forum of the different stages and factors contributing to a sense of belonging and the points in time during the student journey where this was achieved. Second, this initial data was coded to provide a series of categories which informed the creation of an institution-wide survey to investigate further which types of engagement led to a sense of belonging, and to what extent, for each category identified. This research was influenced by the national policy and market economy within current UK Higher Education (HE), with a focus on retention and student satisfaction, which has, in turn, been linked to belonging (Thomas, 2012; Morgan, 2003). The study was undertaken, and the paper authored, through a student-staff partnership within the Winchester Student Fellows Scheme (described by Sims et al, 2014)

Patients’ preferred mode of travel to the orthopaedic theatre

AIM: To determine the preferred mode of travel to the operating theatre for elective orthopaedic patients. METHODS: Data was collected prospectively over a 2-wk period at an elective Orthopaedic Treatment Centre. Patients were asked to complete a patient satisfaction questionnaire following their surgery on their experience and subsequent preferred mode of transport to theatre. The data was then recorded in a tabulated format and analysed with percentages. Fisher’s exact test was used to determine if there was any statistical association between patients’ preference to walk and various groups; in-patient or day case procedures, and whether patients were < 60 years or > 60 years of age. RESULTS: Seventy patients (40 females and 30 males) fully completed the questionnaire. In total there were 33 d-cases and 37 in-patients. The spectrum of orthopaedic sub-specialties included was knee (41%), hip (17%), foot and ankle (24%), spine (13%) and upper limb (4%). Patient satisfaction for overall experience of travelling to theatre was either excellent (77%) or good (23%). Following their experience of travelling to theatre, 87% (95%CI: 79%-95%) of the total cohort would have preferred to walk to the operating theatre. There was a statistically significant association (P = 0.003) between patients’ preference to walk and whether they were day-case or in-patients. Similarly, there was a statistically significance association (P = 0.028) between patients’ preference to walk and whether they were < 60 years or > 60 years of age. CONCLUSION: This study confirms the majority of Orthopaedic elective patients would prefer to walk to theatre, when given the choice and if practically possible

Who They Are and How to Engage Them:A Summary of the REACT Systematic Literature Review of the 'Hard to Reach' in Higher Education

    Get PDF
This article reports upon the systematic literature review of hard to reach students carried out as part of the REACT (Realising Engagement through Active Culture Transformation) project. The review has been undertaken in order to critically assess the concept of hard to reach and attempt to bring some clarity to the use of the term, as well as to add empirical rigour and much-needed context to discussion in this area. The review also explores methods that have been used to explicitly engage the hard to reach, thereby providing a resource for policy makers, researchers and also practitioners who are working to increase inclusivity or better engage their students. The article presents a summary of the initial findings of the review

Applications of aerospace technology to petroleum extraction and reservoir engineering

    Get PDF
Through contacts with the petroleum industry, the petroleum service industry, universities and government agencies, important petroleum extraction problems were identified. For each problem, areas of aerospace technology that might aid in its solution were also identified, where possible. Some of the problems were selected for further consideration. Work on these problems led to the formulation of specific concepts as candidate for development. Each concept is addressed to the solution of specific extraction problems and makes use of specific areas of aerospace technology

Partial Failure of Milk Pasteurization as a Risk for the Transmission of Campylobacter From Cattle to Humans

    Get PDF
Background. Cattle are the second most common source of human campylobacteriosis. However, routes to account for this scale of transmission have not been identified. In contrast to chicken, red meat is not heavily contaminated at point of sale. Although effective pasteurization prevents milk-borne infection, apparently sporadic infections may include undetected outbreaks from raw or perhaps incompletely pasteurized milk.Methods. A rise in Campylobacter gastroenteritis in an isolated population was investigated using whole-genome sequencing (WGS), an epidemiological study, and environmental investigations.Results. A single strain was identified in 20 cases, clearly distinguishable from other local strains and a reference population by WGS. A case-case analysis showed association of infection with the outbreak strain and milk from a single dairy (odds ratio, 8; Fisher exact test P value = .023). Despite temperature records indicating effective pasteurization, mechanical faults likely to lead to incomplete pasteurization of part of the milk were identified by further testing and examination of internal components of dairy equipment.Conclusions. Here, milk distribution concentrated on a small area, including school-aged children with low background incidence of campylobacteriosis, facilitated outbreak identification. Low-level contamination of widely distributed milk would not produce as detectable an outbreak signal. Such hidden outbreaks may contribute to the substantial burden of apparently sporadic Campylobacter from cattle where transmission routes are not certain. The effective discrimination of outbreak isolates from a reference population using WGS shows that integrating these data and approaches into surveillance could support the detection as well as investigation of such outbreaks

Environmental effects on the growth of super massive black holes and AGN feedback

We investigate how environmental effects by gas stripping alter the growth of a super massive black hole (SMBH) and its host galaxy evolution, by means of 1D hydrodynamical simulations that include both mechanical and radiative AGN feedback effects. By changing the truncation radius of the gas distribution (R_t), beyond which gas stripping is assumed to be effective, we simulate possible environments for satellite and central galaxies in galaxy clusters and groups. The continuous escape of gas outside the truncation radius strongly suppresses star formation, while the growth of the SMBH is less affected by gas stripping because the SMBH accretion is primarily ruled by the density of the central region. As we allow for increasing environmental effects - the truncation radius decreasing from about 410 to 50 kpc - we find that the final SMBH mass declines from about 10^9 to 8 x 10^8 Msol, but the outflowing mass is roughly constant at about 2 x 10^10 Msol. There are larger change in the mass of stars formed, which declines from about 2 x 10^10 to 2 x 10^9 Msol, and the final thermal X-ray gas, which declines from about 10^9 to 5 x 10^8 Msol, with increasing environmental stripping. Most dramatic is the decline in the total time that the objects would be seen as quasars, which declines from 52 Myr (for R_t = 377 kpc) to 7.9 Myr (for R_t = 51 kpc). The typical case might be interpreted as a red and dead galaxy having episodic cooling flows followed by AGN feedback effects resulting in temporary transitions of the overall galaxy color from red to green or to blue, with (cluster) central galaxies spending a much larger fraction of their time in the elevated state than do satellite galaxies.(Abridged)Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap
