    Effects of Impurity Content on the Sintering Characteristics of Plasma-Sprayed Zirconia

    Yttria-stabilized zirconia powders, containing different levels of SiO2 and Al2O3, have been plasma sprayed onto metallic substrates. The coatings were detached from their substrates and a dilatometer was used to monitor the dimensional changes they exhibited during prolonged heat treatments. It was found that specimens containing higher levels of silica and alumina exhibited higher rates of linear contraction, in both in-plane and through-thickness directions. The in-plane stiffness and the through-thickness thermal conductivity were also measured after different heat treatments and these were found to increase at a greater rate for specimens with higher impurity (silica and alumina) levels. Changes in the pore architecture during heat treatments were studied using Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP). Fine scale porosity (<_50 nm) was found to be sharply reduced even by relatively short heat treatments. This is correlated with improvements in inter-splat bonding and partial healing of intra-splat microcracks, which are responsible for the observed changes in stiffness and conductivity, as well as the dimensional changes

    B cell-specific conditional expression of Myd88(p.L252P) leads to the development of diffuse large B cell lymphoma in mice

    The adaptor protein MYD88 is critical to relay activation of Toll-like receptor signaling to NF-{kappa}B activation.MYD88 mutations, particularly the p.L265P mutation, have been described in numerous distinct B cell malignancies, including diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). 29% of activated B cell (ABC)-type DLBCL, which is characterized by constitutive activation of the NF-{kappa}B pathway, carry the p.L265P mutation. In addition, ABC-DLBCL frequently displays focal copy number gains affecting BCL2. Here, we generated a novel mouse model, in which Cre-mediated recombination, specifically in B cells, leads to the conditional expression of Myd88(p.L252P)(the orthologous position of the human MYD88(p.L265P) mutation) from the endogenous locus. These animals develop a lympho-proliferative disease, and occasional transformation into clonal lymphomas. The clonal disease displays morphological and immunophenotypical characteristics of ABC-DLBCL. Lymphomagenesis can be accelerated by crossing in a further novel allele, which mediates conditional overexpression ofBCL2 Cross-validation experiments in human DLBCL samples revealed that bothMYD88andCD79Bmutations are substantially enriched in ABC-DLBCL, compared to germinal center B cell DLBCL. Furthermore, analyses of human DLBCL genome sequencing data confirmed that BCL2 amplifications frequently co-occur with MYD88 mutations, further validating our approach. Lastly,in silicoexperiments revealed that particularly MYD88-mutant ABC-DLBCL cells display an actionable addiction to BCL2. Altogether, we generated a novel autochthonous mouse model of ABC-DLBCL, which could be used as a preclinical platform for the development and validation of novel therapeutic approaches for the treatment of ABC-DLBCL

    Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

    BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.     Are there two types of BL Lac objects?

    ROSAT data as well as archival radio and optical data are used for a broad band study of a large group of blazars with positive detection in the soft X-ray band. It is found that X-ray selected BL Lacs differ in their properties from radio selected BL Lacs which, in turn, merge smoothly into the group of highly polarized quasars in many respects. The average soft X-ray spectra of all three object classes differ slightly and X-ray selected BL Lacs seem to require absorption in excess of the Galactic N_H-values. We purpose that the two types of BL Lacs are intrinsically different and either originate from different parent populations or have emission conditions with characteristically distinct physical parameters. Radio selected BL Lacs and highly polarized quasars exhibit nearly identical continuum emission properties but differ in their redshift distribution and intrinsic luminosities. They are thus objects with physically similar parsec-scale jets and might even represent different evolutionary or environmental stages of the same class of highly beamed objects. X-ray selected and radio selected BL Lacs populate distinctly different phase space regions in flux - ratio diagrams. The corresponding values might thus serve as a unambiguous class - definition for the BL Lac population.     The last 10 years have seen a sudden rise in interest in the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in historical research. This has led to a field that has become known as `historical GIS'. This development started in the more quantitative ends of the discipline but has spread to encompass qualitative research as well. Interest in historical GIS is not restricted to researchers who would previously have regarded themselves as historical geographers, but has in fact led to an increased awareness of the importance of geography from across the discipline of history. This paper introduces historical GIS and critically evaluates how it is affecting the practice of historical geography
