    Gate-controlled conductance through bilayer graphene ribbons

    We study the conductance of a biased bilayer graphene flake with monolayer nanoribbon contacts. We find that the transmission through the bilayer ribbon strongly depends on the applied bias between the two layers and on the relative position of the monolayer contacts. Besides the opening of an energy gap on the bilayer, the bias allows to tune the electronic density on the bilayer flake, making possible the control of the electronic transmission by an external parameter.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures include

    Electronic transport through bilayer graphene flakes

    We investigate the electronic transport properties of a bilayer graphene flake contacted by two monolayer nanoribbons. Such a finite-size bilayer flake can be built by overlapping two semiinfinite ribbons or by depositing a monolayer flake onto an infinite nanoribbon. These two structures have a complementary behavior, that we study and analyze by means of a tight-binding method and a continuum Dirac model. We have found that for certain energy ranges and geometries, the conductance of these systems oscillates markedly between zero and the maximum value of the conductance, allowing for the design of electromechanical switches. Our understanding of the electronic transmission through bilayer flakes may provide a way to measure the interlayer hopping in bilayer graphene.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Braneworld inflation from an effective field theory after WMAP three-year data

    In light of the results from the WMAP three-year sky survey, we study an inflationary model based on a single-field polynomial potential, with up to quartic terms in the inflaton field. Our analysis is performed in the context of the Randall-Sundrum II braneworld theory, and we consider both the high-energy and low-energy (i.e. the standard cosmology case) limits of the theory. We examine the parameter space of the model, which leads to both large-field and small-field inflationary type solutions. We conclude that small field inflation, for a potential with a negative mass square term, is in general favored by current bounds on the tensor-to-scalar perturbation ratio rs.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures; references updated and a few comments added; final version to appear in Phys.     Maternal smoking: a life course blood pressure determinant?

    Introduction: Exposure to maternal smoking early in life may affect blood pressure (BP) control mechanisms. We examined the association between maternal smoking (before conception, during pregnancy, and 4 years after delivery) and BP in preschool children. Methods: We evaluated 4295 of Generation XXI children, recruited at birth in 2005–2006 and reevaluated at the age of 4. At birth, information was collected by face-to-face interview and additionally abstracted from clinical records. At 4-year follow-up, interviews were performed and children’s BP measured. Linear regression models were fitted to estimate the association between maternal smoking and children’s BP. Results: Children of smoking mothers presented significantly higher BP levels. After adjustment for maternal education, gestational hypertensive disorders, and child’s body mass index, children exposed during pregnancy to maternal smoking presented a higher systolic BP (SBP) z-score (β = 0.08, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.04 to 0.14). In crude models, maternal smoking was associated with higher SBP z-score at every assessed period. However, after adjustment, an attenuation of the association estimates occurred (β = 0.08, 95% CI 0.03 to 0.13 before conception; β = 0.07, 95%CI 0.02 to 0.12; β = 0.04, 95%CI −0.02 to 0.10; and β = 0.06, 95%CI 0.00 to 0.13 for the first, second, and third pregnancy trimesters, respectively; and β = 0.07, 95%CI 0.02 to 0.12 for current maternal smoking). No significant association was observed for diastolic BP z-score levels. Conclusion: Maternal smoking before, during, and after pregnancy was independently associated with systolic BP z-score in preschool children. This study provides additional evidence to the public health relevance of maternal smoking cessation programs if early cardiovascular health of children is envisaged. Implications: Using observational longitudinal data from the birth cohort Generation XXI, this study showed that exposure to maternal smoking—before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and 4 years after delivery—was associated with a systolic BP-raising effect in children at the age of 4.     Design of a training tool for improving the use of hand-held detectors in humanitarian demining

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to introduce the design of a training tool intended to improve deminers' technique during close-in detection tasks. Design/methodology/approach – Following an introduction that highlights the impact of mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and the importance of training for enhancing the safety and the efficiency of the deminers, this paper considers the utilization of a sensory tracking system to study the skill of the hand-held detector expert operators. With the compiled information, some critical performance variables can be extracted, assessed, and quantified, so that they can be used afterwards as reference values for the training task. In a second stage, the sensory tracking system is used for analysing the trainee skills. The experimentation phase aims to test the effectiveness of the elements that compose the sensory system to track the hand-held detector during the training sessions. Findings – The proposed training tool will be able to evaluate the deminers' efficiency during the scanning tasks and will provide important information for improving their competences. Originality/value – This paper highlights the need of introducing emerging technologies for enhancing the current training techniques for deminers and proposes a sensory tracking system that can be successfully utilised for evaluating trainees' performance with hand-held detectors

    Breaking down the Barrier: Topical Liposomes as Nanocarriers for Drug Delivery into the Posterior Segment of the Eyeball

    Topical instillation is the most widely preferred noninvasive route of drug administration to treat diseases affecting the anterior segment of the eye. Nonetheless, the ocular bioavailability for deeper ocular tissues is very low. Different routes of administration, such as intravitreal injections, periocular injections, and systemic administration, have been used to deliver drugs into the posterior segment ocular tissues. However, the presence of blood-retinal barriers (BRBs) makes systemic administration an impractical approach, whereas the drug delivery with the periocular administration route is compromised by ocular static and dynamic barriers. On the other hand, intravitreal injection, the most common and widely recommended route for drug administration to treat posterior ocular diseases, is related to several side effects such as endophthalmitis, hemorrhage, retinal detachment, and poor patient tolerance. Diverse strategies to overcome ocular barriers have been explored for topical drop formulations in order to deliver drugs into the posterior segment ocular tissues.     Local Luminous Infrared Galaxies. I. Spatially resolved observations with Spitzer/IRS

    We present results from the Spitzer/IRS spectral mapping observations of 15 local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). In this paper we investigate the spatial variations of the mid-IR emission which includes: fine structure lines, molecular hydrogen lines, polycyclic aromatic features (PAHs), continuum emission and the 9.7um silicate feature. We also compare the nuclear and integrated spectra. We find that the star formation takes place in extended regions (several kpc) as probed by the PAH emission as well as the [NeII] and [NeIII] emissions. The behavior of the integrated PAH emission and 9.7um silicate feature is similar to that of local starburst galaxies. We also find that the minima of the [NeIII]/[NeII] ratio tends to be located at the nuclei and its value is lower than that of HII regions in our LIRGs and nearby galaxies. It is likely that increased densities in the nuclei of LIRGs are responsible for the smaller nuclear [NeIII]/[NeII] ratios. This includes the possibility that some of the most massive stars in the nuclei are still embedded in ultracompact HII regions. In a large fraction of our sample the 11.3um PAH emission appears more extended than the dust 5.5um continuum emission. We find a dependency of the 11.3um PAH/7.7 um PAH and [NeII]/11.3um PAH ratios with the age of the stellar populations. Smaller and larger ratios respectively indicate recent star formation. The estimated warm (300 K < T < 1000 K) molecular hydrogen masses are of the order of 10^8 M_Sun, which are similar to those found in ULIRGs, local starbursts and Seyfert galaxies. Finally we find that the [NeII] velocity fields for most of the LIRGs in our sample are compatible with a rotating disk at ~kpc scales, and they are in a good agreement with H-alpha velocity fields.Comment: Comments: 52 pages, accepted for publicacion in ApJ

    The Spatial Extent of (U)LIRGs in the mid-Infrared I: The Continuum Emission

    We present an analysis of the extended mid-infrared (MIR) emission of the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) sample based on 5-15um low resolution spectra obtained with the IRS on Spitzer. We calculate the fraction of extended emission as a function of wavelength for the galaxies in the sample, FEE_lambda. We can identify 3 general types of FEE_lambda: one where it is constant, one where features due to emission lines and PAHs appear more extended than the continuum, and a third which is characteristic of sources with deep silicate absorption at 9.7um. More than 30% of the galaxies have a median FEE_lambda larger than 0.5 implying that at least half of their MIR emission is extended. Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) display a wide range of FEE in their warm dust continuum (0<=FEE_13.2um<=0.85). The large values of FEE_13.2um that we find in many LIRGs suggest that their extended MIR continuum emission originates in scales up to 10kpc. The mean size of the LIRG cores at 13.2um is 2.6kpc. However, once the LIR of the systems reaches the threshold of ~10^11.8Lsun, all sources become clearly more compact, with FEE_13.2um<=0.2, and their cores are unresolved. Our estimated upper limit for the core size of ULIRGs is less than 1.5kpc. The analysis indicates that the compactness of systems with LIR>~10^11.25Lsun strongly increases in those classified as mergers in their final stage of interaction. The FEE_13.2um is also related to the contribution of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) to the MIR. Galaxies which are more AGN-dominated are less extended, independently of their LIR. We finally find that the extent of the MIR continuum emission is correlated with the far-IR IRAS log(f_60um/f_100um) color. This enables us to place a lower limit to the area in a galaxy from where the cold dust emission may originate, a prediction which can be tested soon with the Herschel Space Telescope.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Unmet needs in the management of cardiovascular risk in inflammatory joint diseases

    Introduction: Increased cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality is observed in inflammatory joint diseases (IJDs) such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and psoriatic arthritis. However, the management of CV disease in these conditions is far from being well established.Areas covered: This review summarizes the main epidemiologic, pathophysiological, and clinical risk factors of CV disease associated with IJDs. Less common aspects on early diagnosis and risk stratification of the CV disease in these conditions are also discussed. In Europe, the most commonly used risk algorithm in patients with IJDs is the modified SCORE index based on the revised recommendations proposed by the EULAR task force in 2017.Expert opinion: Early identification of IJD patients at high risk of CV disease is essential. It should include the use of complementary noninvasive imaging techniques. A multidisciplinary approach aimed to improve heart-healthy habits, including strict control of classic CV risk factors is crucial. Adequate management of the underlying IJD is also of main importance since the reduction of disease activity decreases the risk of CV events.
