Background: The effect of modern infertility treatment modalities on fetal thymic volume has not been well known. Objective: 3-dimensional (3D) fetal thymus volumes of 18-24 wk in vitro fertilization (IVF) pregnancies and spontaneous pregnancy cases were compared. Materials and Methods: 135 cases were evaluated in this prospective case-control study. The study was conducted between July 2019 and July 2020 at a university hospital in Trabzon, Turkey. Fetal thymus volume was calculated in the pregnant cases included in the study with the help of the virtual organ computer-assisted analysis system included in the advanced ultrasonography system. The fetal thymus volumes were compared between pregnant women with IVF and spontaneous pregnant women. Results: The fetal thymus size was significantly lower in the IVF pregnancy group than in spontaneous pregnancy cases (p < 0.001). It was found that the fetal complications, such as non-reassuring fetal health status and requirement for neonatal intensive care, were higher in cases who became pregnant after IVF treatment. It was also found that the rate of any pregnancy complication was significantly higher in IVF pregnancy c group (p = 0.02). Conclusion: In light of these results, it may be concluded that small fetal thymus size may be another fetal complication of IVF pregnancies. Key words: Fetus, Fertilization in vitro, Prenatal ultrasonography, Thymus

Sydenham’s chorea (SC) is common cause of acquired chorea in childhood. SC occurs mainly in children with untreated streptococcal infections. An effective list of therapeutic options has been used to treat this disorder: antiepileptic drugs (valproic acid, carbamazepine etc.), haloperidol, chlorpromazine, amphetamines, steroids, plasma exchange and intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG). We report a 12-year-old girl with carditis and severely generalized chorea and successfully treated with IVIG. This case report shows that IVIG is an effective treatment for the chorea cases resistant to anticonvulsants, dopamine antagonists and steroids, although larger studies are needed to confirm this conclusion

A scoping review of root canal revascularization: relevant aspects for clinical success and tissue formation

The aim of this scoping study was to evaluate the survival rate and nature of tissue formed inside root canals of human immature permanent teeth with necrotic pulps (NIPT) under root canal revascularization (RCR). The search was performed in SciVerse Scopus¼, PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science¼, BIREME and in the grey literature up to November 2015. The keywords were selected using MeSH terms and DECs. Two independent reviewers scrutinized the records obtained considering specific inclusion criteria. The included studies were evaluated in accordance with a modified Arksey and Oñ Malley’s framework. From 375 studies that were evaluated, 75 were included. A total of 367 NIPT were submitted to RCR, from which only 21 needed further endodontic treatment. The weighted mean followñ up time was 17.6 months. The data were derived mainly from case reports (69%) or small case series (15%). NaOCl [0.5ñ 6%] was applied as the disinfecting solution in almost all studies. Triple antibiotic paste was as effective as Ca(OH)2 as on intracanal medicament. De novo tissue was cementum and poorly mineralized bone positive to bone sialoprotein (BSP) but negative to dentine sialoprotein (DSP). Failures were associated mainly with reinfection of the root canal. The majority of included studies reported a significant increase in both root length and width. However, as most of these data came from case reports, they must be interpreted with care, as most were focused on treatment successes (not failures). Therefore, wellñ designed randomized controlled trials comparing RCR with available apexification treatments are needed to address this gap in the literature.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/138223/1/iej12711.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/138223/2/iej12711_am.pd

Background: The 5 years since the publication of the first International Consensus Statement on Allergy and Rhinology: Rhinosinusitis (ICAR‐RS) has witnessed foundational progress in our understanding and treatment of rhinologic disease. These advances are reflected within the more than 40 new topics covered within the ICAR‐RS‐2021 as well as updates to the original 140 topics. This executive summary consolidates the evidence‐based findings of the document. Methods: ICAR‐RS presents over 180 topics in the forms of evidence‐based reviews with recommendations (EBRRs), evidence‐based reviews, and literature reviews. The highest grade structured recommendations of the EBRR sections are summarized in this executive summary. Results: ICAR‐RS‐2021 covers 22 topics regarding the medical management of RS, which are grade A/B and are presented in the executive summary. Additionally, 4 topics regarding the surgical management of RS are grade A/B and are presented in the executive summary. Finally, a comprehensive evidence‐based management algorithm is provided. Conclusion: This ICAR‐RS‐2021 executive summary provides a compilation of the evidence‐based recommendations for medical and surgical treatment of the most common forms of RS

Effects of Ukraine's log export ban policy on log sales prices of forest enterprises in Turkey

The effects on forest enterprises in an importer country have been neglected in debate on log export bans (LEBs). This study aimed to determine the effects of pine LEB decisions made by Ukraine on the auction sales prices of three different coniferous log types at three Turkish forest enterprises. Sales price functions were derived using multiple regressions with data on log sales at auction of 4,565 sales lots of third-class normal-length Austrian pine, Scotch pine, and fir logs included in the 213 sales by auction conducted between 2009 and 2018. In the analysis, the auction sales prices for each log type were used as the dependent variable, while Ukraine's LEB, together with the variables related to the possible marketing mix and environmental factors, was treated as the independent variable. Ukraine's LEB most increased the sales price of fir in the Cerkes enterprise (152.87 TL), while it had a lesser increasing effect on the prices of Scotch pine in the Kizilcahamam enterprise and Austrian pine in the Nallihan enterprise (127.48 TL and 55.21 TL, respectively). Ukraine's pine LEB gives forest enterprises in Turkey the opportunity to find additional financial resources for forest management, albeit at different levels

Sentiment Analysis of Turkish Political News

    No full text
In this paper, sentiment classification techniques are incorporated into the domain of political news from columns in different Turkish news sites. We compared four supervised machine learning algorithms of Naive Bayes, Maximum Entropy, SVM and the character based N-Gram Language Model for sentiment classification of Turkish political columns. We also discussed in detail the problem of sentiment classification in the political news domain. We observe from empirical findings that the Maximum Entropy and N-Gram Language Model outperformed the SVM and Naive Bayes. Using different features, all the approaches reached accuracies of 65% to 77%

Transfer Learning Using Twitter Data for Improving Sentiment Classification of Turkish Political News

    No full text
In this paper, we aim to determine the overall sentiment classification of Turkish political columns. That is, our goal is to determine whether the whole document has positive or negative opinion regardless of its subject. In order to enhance the performance of the classification, transfer learning is applied from unlabeled Twitter data to labeled political columns. A variation of self-taught learning has been proposed, and implemented for the classification. Different machine learning techniques, including support vector machine, maximum entropy classification, and Naive-Bayes has been used for the supervised learning phase. In our experiments we have obtained up to 26 % increase in the accuracy of the classification with the inclusion of the Twitter data into the sentiment classification of Turkish political columns using transfer learning

Valuation of goods and services produced by coppice and high forest management alternatives in the Pabucdere Watershed

To effectively manage forest resources, consideration of all benefits provided by forests in management decisions is necessarily required. In this study, the value of benefits gained through management approaches such as coppice forest and high forest was estimated using choice experiments. According to this method, 16 different choice sets were created to include the combination of the level of benefits. There are three forest management options-one status quo (current situation) and two different management options in each choice set. This study aimed to determine the effect of possible management options on marketable and nonmarketable benefits produced by different types of forest management regimes in the Pabucdere watershed. Four ecosystem benefits in form of resources such as timber, water. wildlife. and mushroom were considered. A face-to-face survey was conducted on 384 respondents living in villages inside and near the watershed. Data obtained were analyzed using conditional logit and random parameter logit models with the NLOGIT 5.0 statistical program. Marginal values of the benefits for different parts of the research area and the annual total economic value of each option were calculated. Results revealed that changes in forest management approaches cause a corresponding change in the values added by the society. Considering social preferences as a whole, the more number of "high forests" in the Pabucdere watershed, the more is the value added by the society to forest services
