This work describes the advancements made in the development of models of numerical analysis, combining Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and programming to exchange information between different applications. This allows improvements in the process, given specific tools can be used to optimize each phase. This approach has been especially useful in studies of stability performed on historical buildings. In these cases it is extremely difficult to develop a model given its complexity if only conventional preprocessing tools are to be used

It is a simple and efficient construction system which continued to be used in subsequent centuries. Nevertheless, structural modelling of this type of wall is not easy to achieve. The two wall faces are not rigidly bound and on the other hand, vaults are normally supported only on the intemal face, resulting in reduced efficiency of the wall unit. Common models of finite elements are unable to solve many of the problems that arise when they are applied to a monumental construction. This paper tackles the problem and puts forward various possibilities of solution with different element types.. It also provides two examples of Gothic monuments in Galicia (Spain) in which structural behaviour was studied using some of these calculation models: the churches of Guimarei and Cambados

ABSTRACT: The decentralization of artistic circles in the country has been the subject of several questions, which in no way ignores the countless contributions Santiago has made, the development of art in the country, but rather seeks to recognize peripheral discourses which have failed in overcrowding and assessment. In this framework, the research aims to explain the presence that made the city of Concepcion in the national art, and to effect a recognition of peripheral discourses in the field of plastic and advocates the value of artistic creation from the local point of view. For this we present the different cultural agents which have favored the development of penquista art, such as educational institutions, galleries, artists, among others, who have formed a circuit that allows own artistic training, production, circulation and dissemination of various art manifestations of the periphery. The research has a historiographical nature and has drawn on literature related to art theory, history of Conception city and artistic expressions in the area; to thereby establish objective conclusions on the subject in questio

Application of a new system of self-tensioning to the design of large-span wood floor framings

[Abstract]This study describes a self-tensioning system in which the gravitational loads acting on a horizontal structural element are automatically converted to a post-tensioning force on that component. The self-tensioning effect has a variable intensity, constantly adjusted depending on the applied service loads. The self-tensioning is eccentrically applied over the cross-section, and it generates a negative moment that compensates the deformations due to the gravitational loads. The system can be utilized in beams, slabs and structural framings of different materials and can be implemented using different mechanical and hydraulic solutions. The study describes the operation of a mechanical solution for the self-tensioning system and analyzes its behavior in large-span timber floor framings. When combined with conventional pre-tensioning, the self-tensioning system notably improves the strength and deformation behavior and permits a design of timber floor framings with a total height of 0.03 times the span length, achieving relative deflections below 1/1000 of the span for the service loads of the structure

The elaboration of this essay is part of a research project conceived around the documentary archive of the Spanish-Chilean art critic Antonio Romera (1908-1975). Among the numerous letters that make up this archive, we have located a total of fourteen letters addressed, between 1943 and 1964, by the Argentine art critic Jorge Romero Brest (1905-1989) to Romera, which, although intermittently, allow us to trace an overview of the links that they maintained at least in those more than twenty years. Going through the content of these letters, we extracted those themes that appeared as central and reiterated in them, defining the very headings of this article; They are: a) comments related to another of Antonio Romera’s priority activities, his work as a cartoonist; b) Romera’s contribution (and non-contribution) to the magazine founded and directed by Romero Brest (with the collaboration of his disciples), Ver y Estimar (1948-1955); c) the mutual comments and reviews between Romera and Romero Brest on the books they published between the 1940s and 1950s.La elaboración de este ensayo se enmarca dentro de un proyecto de investigación concebido en torno al archivo documental del crítico de arte hispano-chileno Antonio Romera (1908-1975).

Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the satisfaction of patients regarding retention, stability and accumulation of particles with a randomized, double-blind crossed method in users with complete dentures with and without adhesive. Material and Methods: Seventeen edentulous individuals were randomized and received new upper and lower complete dentures. After a period of adaptation, they participated in some masticatory tests and clinical revisions, after use the protheses with and without the use of two denture adhesives: Adhesive A (Fittydent, Fittydent International GmbH) and adhesive B (Corega, GlaxoSmithKline) at 0, 7 and 14 days. Satisfaction was measured immediately after each test through a survey using a VAS scale (0-10) and data were analyzed with McNemar?s test with Bonferroni correction. Results: The results showed significant differences ( p <.01) between the study groups with adhesive A - B and the group without adhesive, but no significant differences were found between the two stickers for any of the variables studied. Conclusions: Complete denture adhesives significantly improved the satisfaction of patients because a better retention, stability and less accumulation of particles of the food substitute between the denture and the mucosa is obtained compared with non-use of complete denture adhesives

MoS2-Carbon Nanodots as a New Electrochemiluminescence Platform for Breast Cancer Biomarker Detection

In this work, we present the combination of two different types of nanomaterials, 2D molybdenum disulfide nanosheets (MoS2-NS) and zero-dimensional carbon nanodots (CDs), for the development of a new electrochemiluminescence (ECL) platform for the early detection and quantification of the biomarker human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), whose overexpression is associated with breast cancer. MoS2-NS are used as an immobilization platform for the thiolated aptamer, which can recognize the HER2 epitope peptide with high affinity, and CDs act as coreactants of the anodic oxidation of the luminophore [Ru(bpy)3]2+. The HER2 biomarker is detected by changes in the ECL signal of the [Ru(bpy)3]2+/CD system, with a low detection limit of 1.84 fg/mL and a wide linear range. The proposed method has been successfully applied to detect the HER2 biomarker in human serum samplesThis work has been financially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (PID2020-116728RB-I00, PID2020-116661RB-I00, CTQ2015-71955-REDT (ELECTROBIONET)), Community of Madrid (TRANSNANOAVANSENS, S2018/NMT-4349, and FotoArt (P2018/NMT4367), project S2018/NMT-4291 TEC2SPACE), MINECO (project CSIC13-4E-1794) and EU (FEDER, FSE). Temperature but not leptin prevents semi-starvation induced hyperactivity in rats: implications for anorexia nervosa treatment

    Get PDF
The hypothesis linking hyperactivity with weight loss associated hypoleptinemia in anorexia nervosa gained momentum after a study showing that leptin suppressed semi-starvation induced hyperactivity in rats. Alternatively, ambient temperature is a key modulating factor of activity in semi-starved rats. The aim of the study is to compare the efficacy of leptin with increased ambient temperature in the prevention of hyperactivity in semi-starved rats. 74 Sprague-Dawley male rats were employed in two experiments with the difference residing in the length of baseline. After an extended (28 days), or shorter (14 days) baseline with free access to food and the running wheel, housed at 21 °C, animals were either ad-lib feed or food restricted (60% of food ingested during previous week) and infused with same amount of leptin at 21 °C, 25 °C, or vehicle at 21 °C, 25 °C and 32 °C for a week. Animals housed at 32 °C significantly reduced wheel running and weight loss during food restriction while animals given leptin did not yield no differences in activity or weight loss. Moreover, unlike animals housed at 32 °C, body temperature of leptin infused animals housed at 21 °C was significantly reduced during food restriction. Furthermore, leptin treated rats without a preceding stable pattern of activity displayed a severe dysregulation of circadian rhythm in activity and a collapse of body temperature. Housing temperature plays a more critical role than leptin in the regulation of semi-starvation induced hyperactivity in rats, which may be of relevance for the management of hyperactivity in anorexia nervosaResearch leading to these results has received funding from the research budget from the Unidade Venres Clinicos (E.G., A.F.) and the Xunta de Galicia (ML: 2015-CP079 and 2016-PG068); Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO) co-funded by the FEDER Program of EU (ML: RTI2018-101840-B-I00 and BFU2015-70454-REDT/Adipoplast) and Atresmedia Corporación (ML); MC, AGI, (CIBERobn), Xunta de Galicia and Instituto de Salud Carlos III (PI 17/01287).
