Acute bronchiolitis in infancy as risk factor for wheezing and reduced pulmonary function by seven years in Akershus County, Norway
BACKGROUND: Acute viral bronchiolitis is one of the most common causes of hospitalisation during infancy in our region with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) historically being the major causative agent. Many infants with early-life RSV bronchiolitis have sustained bronchial hyperreactivity for many years after hospitalisation and the reasons for this are probably multifactorial. The principal aim of the present study was to investigate if children hospitalised for any acute viral bronchiolitis during infancy in our region, and not only those due to RSV, had more episodes of subsequent wheezing up to age seven years and reduced lung function at that age compared to children not hospitalised for acute bronchiolitis during infancy. A secondary aim was to compare the hospitalised infants with proven RSV bronchiolitis (RS+) to the hospitalised infants with non-RSV bronchiolitis (RS-) according to the same endpoints. METHODS: 57 infants hospitalised at least once with acute viral bronchiolitis during two consecutive winter seasons in 1993â1994 were examined at age seven years. An age-matched control group of 64 children, who had not been hospitalised for acute viral bronchiolitis during infancy, were recruited from a local primary school. Epidemiological and clinical data were collected retrospectively from hospital discharge records and through structured clinical interviews and physical examinations at the follow-up visit. RESULTS: The children hospitalised for bronchiolitis during infancy had decreased lung function, more often wheezing episodes, current medication and follow-up for asthma at age seven years than did the age matched controls. They also had lower average birth weight and more often first order family members with asthma. We did not find significant differences between the RSV+ and RSV- groups. CONCLUSION: Children hospitalised for early-life bronchiolitis are susceptible to recurrent wheezing and reduced pulmonary function by seven years compared to age-matched children not hospitalised for early-life bronchiolitis. We propose that prolonged bronchial hyperreactivity could follow early-life RSV negative as well as RSV positive bronchiolitis
A mixed exercise training programme is feasible and safe and may improve quality of life and muscle strength in multiple myeloma survivors
Exercise programmes are beneficial for cancer patients however evidence is limited in patients with multiple myeloma (MM), a cancer that is characterised by osteolytic bone disease, giving rise to high levels of bone morbidity including fractures and bone pain

The production of J/\).psi\) and was measured with the ALICE detector in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. The measurement was performed at forward rapidity 2.5 < y < 4 \() down to zero transverse momentum \(p_{\rm T} in the dimuon decay channel. Inclusive J/\).psi\) yields were extracted in different centrality classes and the centrality dependence of the average is presented. The J/\).psi\) suppression, quantified with the nuclear modification factor , was studied as a function of centrality, transverse momentum and rapidity. Comparisons with similar measurements at lower collision energy and theoretical models indicate that the J/\).psi\) production is the result of an interplay between color screening and recombination mechanisms in a deconfined partonic medium, or at its hadronization. Results on the suppression are provided via the ratio of over J/\).psi\) measured in pp and Pb-Pb collisions
Understanding the concept of the entrepreneurial university from the perspective of higher education models
Over the last few decades, globalization and ever-increasing demands of the knowledge-based economy have caused higher education in most countries around the world to undergo significant transformation. Notwithstanding the dramatic changes in higher education, it is clearly noticed that the influence of the European higher education models is still present despite the fact that the American model has then become dominant on higher education in Europe or even worldwide. The changes have been seen in the evolutionary roles of universities, which share the common trend from traditional missions of teaching and research to the third mission for economic development. Despite various viewpoints about the third mission, the common one concerns the entrepreneurial role of university for socio-economic development, underlying the concept of entrepreneurial university in which the collaboration between university and external stakeholders is emphasized. This paper is aimed to present a review of the taxonomy of the three European higher education models, namely the Humboldtian, Napoleonic, and Anglo-Saxon model, which is followed by a discussion on the emergence of the Anglo-American model of higher education. The paper then presents the third mission in relation to the roles of a university in developed countries, which is followed by the elaboration on the transformation from mode 1 to mode 2 in knowledge production, and a pathway toward entrepreneurial universities. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht
Exclusive J/psi Photoproduction off Protons in Ultraperipheral p-Pb Collisions at root s(NN)=5.02 TeV
We present the first measurement at the LHC of exclusive J/psi photoproduction off protons, in ultraperipheral proton-lead collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV. Events are selected with a dimuon pair produced either in the rapidity interval, in the laboratory frame, 2.5 J/psi + p) are 33.2 +/- 2.2(stat) +/- 3.2(syst) +/- 0.7(theor) nb in p-Pb and 284 +/- 36(stat)(-32)(+27)(syst) +/- 26(theor) nb in Pb-p collisions. We measure this process up to about 700 GeV in the gamma p center of mass, which is a factor of two larger than the highest energy studied at HERA. The data are consistent with a power law dependence of the J/psi photoproduction cross section in gamma p energies from about 20 to 700 GeV, or equivalently, from Bjorken x scaling variable between similar to 2 x 10(-2) and similar to 2 x 10(-5), thus indicating no significant change in the gluon density behavior of the proton between HERA and LHC energies
