Urinary infection or radiation cystitis? A prospective evaluation of urinary symptoms in patients submitted to pelvic radiotherapy

    Get PDF
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of urinary tract infection (UTI) in patients with cystitis symptoms who underwent pelvic radiation therapy and identify correlated predictive factors. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted of patients who met the following: primary pelvic cancer treated with curative intent, older than 18 years old, and good performance status. The exclusion criteria were patients being treated for a UTI, using a urinary catheter, in dialysis or with cystostomy or nephrostomy, and using antibiotics during treatment. Urinalysis and urine culture were collected before the beginning of radiation therapy. Weekly evaluations of urinary symptoms were subsequently performed. In cases of new or worsening symptoms, a questionnaire was applied, and new urine exams were collected. The UTI diagnosis was defined by uroculture as bacterial growth greater than 104 CFU/mL. RESULTS: From September 2014 to November 2015, 112 patients were sequentially recruited, and 72 (64%) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. During follow-up, 24 (33%) patients had new urinary symptoms or worse preexisting symptoms. A UTI was confirmed in the second urinary culture in only one (1.4%) patient. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of UTI was much lower than expected, suggesting that asymptomatic bacteriuria develops symptoms due to radiotherapy. Due to the low rate of UTI, no predictive factor was identified

OBJECTIVE: To assess radiographically the prevalence of morphological alterations of the styloid process in patients with temporomandibular joint disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have analyzed 1,500 panoramic x-ray films of temporomandibular joint from both male and female patients with no age limit, who were attended in the Service of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder of Faculty of Odontology at Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, MG, Brazil, in the period between 1997 and 2003. RESULTS: Eighty-three (5.53%) of the analyzed patients (74 female and 9 male), predominantly in the age range between 41 and 50 years (32.5%), presented with, at least, one of the joint sides with morphological alteration of the styloid process. As far as the type of styloid process in concerned, 113 elongated, 21 pseudoarticulated and 19 segmented were observed. Also, it was noticed that the morphological alterations of the styloid process develop in a symmetrical fashion. CONCLUSION: In individuals with temporomandibular joint disorder, styloid process alterations occur symmetrically and in a different way for each patient, independently from sex and age.OBJETIVO: Avaliar, radiograficamente, a prevalência de alterações morfológicas do processo estilóide em pacientes com desordens temporomandibulares.

Vaginal sheets with Thymbra capitata essential oil for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis: design, characterization and in vitro evaluation of efficacy and safety

We aimed to incorporate Thymbra capitata essential oil (TCEO), a potent antimicrobial natural product against bacterial vaginosis (BV)-related bacteria, in a suitable drug delivery system. We used vaginal sheets as dosage form to promote immediate relief of the typical abundant vaginal discharge with unpleasant odour. Excipients were selected to promote the healthy vaginal environment reestablishment and bioadhesion of formulations, while the TCEO acts directly on BV pathogens. We characterized vaginal sheets with TCEO in regard to technological characterization, predictable in vivo performance, in vitro efficacy and safety. Vaginal sheet D.O (acid lactic buffer, gelatine, glycerine, chitosan coated with TCEO 1% w/w) presented a higher buffer capacity and ability to absorb vaginal fluid simulant (VFS) among all vaginal sheets with EO, showing one of the most promising bioadhesive profiles, an excellent flexibility and structure that allow it to be easily rolled for application. Vaginal sheet D.O with 0.32 µL/mL TCEO was able to significantly reduce the bacterial load of all in vitro tested Gardnerella species. Although vaginal sheet D.O presented toxicity at some concentrations, this product was developed for a short time period of treatment, so this toxicity can probably be limited or even reversed when the treatment ends. This work supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology within the research project PTDC/BIA-MIC/28271/2017 under the scope of COMPETE 2020 (POCI-01- 0145-FEDER-028271) including an individual scholarship and general funding.

    Get PDF
Tropical forests are historically affected by deforestation, environmental degradation and socio-environmental transformations, which turns these ecosystems into priority areas for biodiversity conservation and restoration of forests and landscapes. The Mata Atlântica region brings together social, environmental and institutional conditions for the implementation of restoration initiatives, particularly in the state of São Paulo portion of the Paraíba Valley. The article aims at describing the history of initiatives, the network of social actors and the interactions that shape Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) governance in the Paraíba Valley. Semi-structured interviews and social landscape mapping were used for data collection, as well as content and social network analyses. Forest and Landscape Restoration actions have been taking place in the Paraíba Valley for at least 15 years, currently involving around 100 local and regional social actors. It is understood that the Paraíba Valley social landscape offers favorable conditions for the advancement of Forest and Landscape Restoration initiatives given the multiplicity of actors and interactions between levels. The results suggest that project and program decision-makers should prioritize the social roles of intermediation, dissemination and change agents to integrate peripheral actors in the Forest and Landscape Restoration network.
