Excitonic effects in optical absorption and electron-energy loss spectra of hexagonal boron nitride
A new interpretation of the optical and energy-loss spectra of hexagonal
boron nitride is provided based on first-principle calculations. We show that
both spectra cannot be explained by independent-particle transitions but are
strongly dominated by excitonic effects. The lowest direct and indirect gaps
are much larger than previously reported. The direct gap amounts to 6.8 eV. The
first absorption peak at 6.1 eV is due to an exciton with a binding energy of
0.7 eV. We show that this strongly bound Frenkel exciton is also responsible
for the low frequency shoulder of the pi plasmon in the energy-loss function.
Implications for nanotube studies are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Optical properties of periodic systems within the current-current response framework: pitfalls and remedies
We compare the optical absorption of extended systems using the
density-density and current-current linear response functions calculated within
many-body perturbation theory. The two approaches are formally equivalent for a
finite momentum of the external perturbation. At
, however, the equivalence is maintained only if a small
expansion of the density-density response function is used. Moreover, in
practical calculations this equivalence can be lost if one naively extends the
strategies usually employed in the density-based approach to the current-based
approach. Specifically we discuss the use of a smearing parameter or of the
quasiparticle lifetimes to describe the finite width of the spectral peaks and
the inclusion of electron-hole interaction. In those instances we show that the
incorrect definition of the velocity operator and the violation of the
conductivity sum rule introduce unphysical features in the optical absorption
spectra of three paradigmatic systems: silicon (semiconductor), copper (metal)
and lithium fluoride (insulator). We then demonstrate how to correctly
introduce lifetime effects and electron-hole interactions within the
current-based approach.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure

The metabolic network has a modular architecture, is robust to perturbations, and responds to biological stimuli and environmental conditions. Through monitoring by metabolite responsive macromolecules, metabolic pathways interact with the transcriptome and proteome. Whereas pathway interconnecting cofactors and substrates report on the overall state of the network, specialised intermediates measure the activity of individual functional units. Transitions in the network affect many of these regulatory metabolites, facilitating the parallel regulation of the timing and control of diverse biological processes. The metabolic network controls its own balance, chromatin structure and the biosynthesis of molecular cofactors; moreover, metabolic shifts are crucial in the response to oxidative stress and play a regulatory role in cancer
Primacy of Paper: The Importance of the Medium in Records Management
ABSTRACT This poster presents findings from a group ethnographic study of records managers at four different sites. At the site that is the focus of this analysis, research participants' tasks primarily consisted of examining individual case files to determine if the files should be kept or destroyed under the relevant rules set by records managers. Close observation of work practices showed that application of records management rules varied depending on the medium of the records. This study begins the work of bridging a gap between archival and records management policies for interactions with records across varying media, and empirical research on how people interact with objects on varying media
Gravitational waves will offer a new window to the universe. Their detection by ground based detectors should arrive soon and the future space based interferometer eLISA will allow to do gravitational wave astronomy in order to get unique informations on their sources wether black holes, neutron stars, the Big Bang etc. The effect of a gravitational wave is an extremely weak variation of distance, it will require a very performant detector. Thatâs why eLISA should reach picometer precision with arm length of a million kilometer. Such a concept must be tested both numerically and experimentally in order to validate the planned noise reduction technics. The dominant noise will come from the laser itself. Although laser stabilization methods exists, the required level for the detection of gravitational waves is not achievable with the current level of technology. Consequently eLISA will use a post measurement process called time delay interferometry which allows to recombine numerically the measurement to form an equal arm interferometer in order to cancel laser noise like in a standard equal arm interferometer. This algorithm called TDI (Time Delay Interferometry) is one of the main point of study of this thesis. Indeed the LOT is an interferometer both optical and electronic which aims to simulate eLISA and especially to test TDI on a realistic conïŹguration of eLISA. As it is impossible to delay the laser light of the time of a round trip on eLISA, about six seconds, the LOT injects the simulated noises with the appropriate delays to measure the interferences and apply TDI. However, this should be realized in consideration of the intrinsic noises of the LOT which must be understood and reduced as much as possible. Moreover the LOT will adress other problematics of eLISA such as the clock noise of each satellite. The work which was achieved has led to an installation of a part of the LOT and to the improvement of the interferometerâs noise level thus allowing to obtain the ïŹrst results in a simpliïŹed but realistic conïŹguration of eLISA while preparing it for additionnal features in order to get closer of the space detectorâs conïŹguration. Thereby the LOT ïŹts in the efforts made by the eLISA community to fully simulate the future detector and to prepare an integration and test phase in which the LOT will be able to play a part as a test bench for some elements.
