Ventilation times scales for a subtropical bay from 3-D modelling
[Abstract]: We applied a multi-purpose three-dimensional ocean general circulation model to
compute water renewal time scales for a large coastal embayment situated off the
central eastern coast of Australia (Hervey Bay) that shows features of an inverse estuary.
Water renewal or ventilation time scales are not directly observable but can easily
be diagnosed from numerical simulations. Improved knowledge of these time scales
can assists in evaluating the water quality of coastal environments and can be utilised
in sustainable marine resource management.
The numerical studies are performed with the COupled Hydrodynamical Ecological
model for REgioNal Shelf seas (COHERENS). The model, adopted for Hervey Bay,
provided insight into ventilation pathways, and renewal time scales were found to exhibit
a strong spatial variability. More than 80 % of the coastal embayment was fully
ventilated after about 70-100 days, with the eastern and western shallow coastal regions
ventilated more rapidly than the central, deeper part of the bay.
The concept of a single ’typical’ ventilation timescale characterising this particular
coastal embayment is inadequate and the consideration of spatial variability is clearly
important, hence in a second set of simulations local monitoring boxes and Lagrangian
tracers have been used to focus on this spatial variability. Simple parameters are derived
to estimate local sedimentation, transport processes or places of high/low biological
production
How magic is the magic 68Ni nucleus?
We calculate the B(E2) strength in 68Ni and other nickel isotopes using
several theoretical approaches. We find that in 68Ni the gamma transition to
the first 2+ state exhausts only a fraction of the total B(E2) strength, which
is mainly collected in excited states around 5 MeV. This effect is sensitive to
the energy splitting between the fp shell and the g_{9/2}orbital. We argue that
the small experimental B(E2) value is not strong evidence for the double-magic

Collective and broken pair states of 65,67Ga
Excited states of 65Ga and 67Ga nuclei were populated through the 12C(58Ni,αp) and 12C(58Ni,3p) reactions, respectively, and investigated by in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic methods. The NORDBALL array equipped with a charged particle ball and 11 neutron detectors was used to detect the evaporated particles and γ rays. The level schemes of 65,67Ga were constructed on the basis of γγ-coincidence relations up to 8.6 and 10 MeV excitation energy, and Iπ=27/2 and 33/2+ spin and parity, respectively. The structure of 65,67Ga nuclei was described in the interacting boson-fermion plus broken pair model, including quasiproton, quasiproton-two-quasineutron, and three-quasiproton fermion configurations in the boson-fermion basis states. Most of the states were assigned to quasiparticle + phonon and three quasiparticle configurations on the basis of their electromagnetic decay properties

Height and timing of growth spurt during puberty in young people living with vertically acquired HIV in Europe and Thailand.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe growth during puberty in young people with vertically acquired HIV. DESIGN: Pooled data from 12 paediatric HIV cohorts in Europe and Thailand. METHODS: One thousand and ninety-four children initiating a nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor or boosted protease inhibitor based regimen aged 1-10 years were included. Super Imposition by Translation And Rotation (SITAR) models described growth from age 8 years using three parameters (average height, timing and shape of the growth spurt), dependent on age and height-for-age z-score (HAZ) (WHO references) at antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation. Multivariate regression explored characteristics associated with these three parameters. RESULTS: At ART initiation, median age and HAZ was 6.4 [interquartile range (IQR): 2.8, 9.0] years and -1.2 (IQR: -2.3 to -0.2), respectively. Median follow-up was 9.1 (IQR: 6.9, 11.4) years. In girls, older age and lower HAZ at ART initiation were independently associated with a growth spurt which occurred 0.41 (95% confidence interval 0.20-0.62) years later in children starting ART age 6 to 10 years compared with 1 to 2 years and 1.50 (1.21-1.78) years later in those starting with HAZ less than -3 compared with HAZ at least -1. Later growth spurts in girls resulted in continued height growth into later adolescence. In boys starting ART with HAZ less than -1, growth spurts were later in children starting ART in the oldest age group, but for HAZ at least -1, there was no association with age. Girls and boys who initiated ART with HAZ at least -1 maintained a similar height to the WHO reference mean. CONCLUSION: Stunting at ART initiation was associated with later growth spurts in girls. Children with HAZ at least -1 at ART initiation grew in height at the level expected in HIV negative children of a comparable age
Social interaction patterns, therapist responsiveness, and outcome in treatments for borderline personality disorder.
Inflexible social interaction patterns are defining features of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Specific beliefs about the self and others may be activated across interaction situations, often leading to instable relationships. It may be pivotal to address these difficulties in early treatment phases, through appropriate therapist responsiveness, which means an adaptation of therapist's activity to their client's behaviours using emerging information in the process (Stiles, 2009, Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice, 16, 86).
In this process-outcome study, responsiveness is operationalized by the motive-oriented therapeutic relationship (Caspar, 2007, Handbook of psychotherapeutic case formulations, 2nd ed., 251-289, Guilford), based on the Plan analysis case formulation. The present study assesses the interplay between social interaction problems and therapist responsiveness, explaining symptoms at discharge and the therapeutic alliance.
In total, N = 50 clients with BPD entered the study, and standard and responsive treatments were compared. Social interaction patterns were assessed by the newly developed Borderline Interaction Patterns Scale (BIPS), applied to recorded material of three sessions per therapy. Outcome was measured by general symptoms (OQ-45), borderline symptoms (BSL-23), interpersonal problems (IIP), and the therapeutic alliance (WAI).
Results suggest that in standard treatment, social interaction patterns are neither related to outcome nor the therapeutic alliance. In responsive treatment, more activation of social interaction patterns predicted better outcome on IIP and lower therapist ratings of the alliance.
The conclusions seem promising for specific effectiveness of responsive treatments in particular in the interpersonal problem area of BPD. Identifying social interaction patterns early in treatment may be a crucial pathway to change for BPD.
Responsive therapy activating social interaction patterns may be crucial for better outcome. Future research should focus on mechanisms of change in early treatment phases for BPD. New scale for assessing social interaction patterns specific to borderline personality disorder
Decay spectroscopy of Cd-129
Excited states of In populated following the -decay of
Cd were experimentally studied with the GRIFFIN spectrometer at the
ISAC facility of TRIUMF, Canada. A 480-MeV proton beam was impinged on a
uranium carbide target and Cd was extracted using the Ion Guide Laser
Ion Source (IG-LIS). - and -rays following the decay of
Cd were detected with the GRIFFIN spectrometer comprising the plastic
scintillator SCEPTAR and 16 high-purity germanium (HPGe) clover-type detectors.
%, along with the -particles were detected with SCEPTAR. From the
-- coincidence analysis, 32 new transitions and 7 new
excited states were established, expanding the previously known level scheme of
In. The values deduced from the -feeding intensities
suggest that some of the high-lying states were populated by the allowed Gamow-Teller (GT) transition, which
indicates that the allowed GT transition is more dominant in the Cd
decay than previously reported. Observation of fragmented Gamow-Teller
