Changes in the juvenile fish assemblage of a Mediterranean shallow Posidonia oceanica seagrass nursery area after half a century
The within-year dynamics of the juvenile fish community in a shallow seagrass-dominated nursery habitat (Posidonia oceanica) in a Mediterranean bay were compared between two surveys separated by 50 years (1960 and 2012-2013). A nocturnal survey over depths ranging from 2 to 10 m over patchy seagrass meadows was conducted for one year (2012-2013) through 72 epibenthic tows spread fortnightly in 4 nearby stations, mimicking a survey conducted in 1960 in terms of sampling intensity, sampling zone, temporal coverage and sampling gear. Although a large proportion of the fish species were similar among surveys, remarkable and statistically significant differences were detected. A striking feature was that one of the most common and abundant Sparidae species currently, Diplodus annularis, did not appear in 1960. Other strong differences included the nonappearance of the European eel Anguilla anguilla in the recent survey. Furthermore, one of the most valuable species for artisanal fisheries in the area, the black scorpionfish Scorpaena porcus, was almost 10 times less abundant in 1960. A finer-scale study of the 2012-2013 survey allowed a quantitative analysis between species composition and potential environmental drivers through redundancy analysis that well described the current pattern of time-dependent recruitment pulses in nearshore meadows of the area throughout the year, with marked effects of surface temperature and photoperiod. The comparison between surveys suggests that some major differences between surveys are not likely to be attributable to interannual stochasticity in recruitment or environmental variability but may be related to i) unaccounted-for habitat transformation and/or ii) the strong decrease in juvenile fishing mortality in this shallow nursery area since the enforcement of bans on littoral epibenthic trawling activities characteristic of this area
Riesgo de disfunción ocupacional en estudiantes de 4º de ESO: programa de intervención de terapia ocupacional
La adolescencia es una etapa que se percibe habitualmente como un proceso de vivencia complicado lleno de cambios especialmente psicológicos y sociales que conllevan la aparición de algunos riesgos de disfunción ocupacional. El trabajo presentado se orienta principalmente a la detección de estos riesgos en estudiantes de ESO, entendiendo que la disfunción ocupacional puede manifestarse como problemas en el desempeño, organización y/o elección de las ocupaciones y que habitualmente se percibe como un proceso de alteración del equilibrio ocupacional. Se realiza una primera fase que consiste en el estudio de las ocupaciones que llevan a cabo los estudiantes en la etapa de la adolescencia media escolarizados en el cuarto curso de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria. En una segunda fase se analizan los resultados obtenidos para plantear los objetivos y planificar una serie de actividades; y finalmente se reevalúan las actividades y la consecución de los objetivos.<br /
Population prevalence and control of cardiovascular risk factors : What electronic medical records tell us
To analyze the prevalence, control, and management of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2). Cross-sectional analysis of all individuals attended in the Catalan primary care centers between 2006 and 2009. History of cardiovascular diseases, diagnosis and treatment of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, DM2, lipid profile, glycemia and blood pressure data were extracted from electronic medical records. Age-standardized prevalence and levels of management and control were estimated. Individuals aged 35-74 years using primary care databases. A total of 2,174,515 individuals were included (mean age 52 years [SD 11], 47% men). Hypertension was the most prevalent cardiovascular risk factor (39% in women, 41% in men) followed by hypercholesterolemia (38% and 40%) and DM2 (12% and 16%), respectively. Diuretics and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors were most often prescribed for hypertension control (<140/90 mmHg, achieved in 68% of men and 60% of women treated). Hypercholesterolemia was controlled (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol <130 mg/dl) in just 31% of men and 26% of women with no history of cardiovascular disease, despite lipid-lowering treatment, primarily (90%) with statins. The percentage of women and men with DM2 and with glycated hemoglobin <7% was 64.7% and 59.2%, respectively; treatment was predominantly with oral hypoglycemic agents alone (70%), or combined with insulin (15%). Hypertension was the most prevalent cardiovascular risk factor in the Catalan population attended at primary care centers. [Background] Metabolic alterations play a role in the development of inflammatory myopathies (IMs). Herein, we have investigated through a multiplex assay whether proteins of energy metabolism could provide biomarkers of IMs.[Methods] A cohort of thirty-two muscle biopsies and forty plasma samples comprising polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM) and sporadic inclusion body myositis (sIBM) and control donors was interrogated with monoclonal antibodies against proteins of energy metabolism using reverse phase protein microarrays (RPPA)[Results] When compared to controls the expression of the proteins is not significantly affected in the muscle of PM patients. However, the expression of β-actin is significantly increased in DM and sIBM in consistence with muscle and fiber regeneration. Concurrently, the expression of some proteins involved in glucose metabolism displayed a significant reduction in muscle of sIBM suggesting a repression of glycolytic metabolism in these patients. In contrasts to these findings, the expression of the glycolytic pyruvate kinase isoform M2 (PKM2) and of the mitochondrial ATPase Inhibitor Factor 1 (IF1) and Hsp60 were significantly augmented in DM when compared to other IMs in accordance with a metabolic shift prone to cancer development. PKM2 alone or in combination with other biomarkers allowed the discrimination of control and IMs with very high (>95%) sensitivity and specificity. Unfortunately, plasma levels of PKM2 were not significantly altered in DM patients to recommend its use as a non-invasive biomarker of the disease.[Conclusions] Expression of proteins of energy metabolism in muscle enabled discrimination of patients with IMs. RPPA identified the glycolysis promoting PKM2 and IF1 proteins as specific biomarkers of dermatomyositis, providing a biochemical link of this IM with oncogenesis.FS was supported by a pre-doctoral fellowship from FPI-UAM Spain. Behind the scenes: mechanisms regulating climatic patterns of dissolved organic carbon uptake in headwater streams
Large variability in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) uptake rates has been reported for headwater streams, but the causes of this variability are still not well understood. Here we assessed acetate uptake rates across 11 European streams comprising different ecoregions by using whole-reach pulse acetate additions. We evaluated the main climatic and biogeochemical drivers of acetate uptake during two seasonal periods. Our results show a minor influence of sampling periods but a strong effect of climate and dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition on acetate uptake. In particular, mean annual precipitation explained half of the variability of the acetate uptake velocities (VfAcetate) across streams. Temperate streams presented the lowest VfAcetate, together with humic-like DOM and the highest stream respiration rates. In contrast, higher VfAcetate were found in semiarid streams, with protein-like DOM, indicating a dominance of reactive, labile compounds. This, together with lower stream respiration rates and molar ratios of DOC to nitrate, suggests a strong C limitation in semiarid streams, likely due to reduced inputs from the catchment. Overall, this study highlights the interplay of climate and DOM composition and its relevance to understand the biogeochemical mechanisms controlling DOC uptake in streams.Theauthors were supported by the following funding: N. Early-Career Coordinated Distributed Experiments: Empowerment Through Collaboration

patterns in geographically dispersed areas, while simultaneously providing broad
academic and personal benefits for the participants. However, the effective involvement
of early-career researchers (ECRs) presents major challenges. Here, we analyze the
benefits and challenges of the first CDE exclusively led and conducted by ECRs (i.e.
ECR-CDE), which sets a baseline for similar CDEs, and we provide recommendations
for successful CDE execution. ECR-CDEs achieve most of the outcomes identified in
conventional CDEs as well as extensive benefits for the young cohort of researchers,
including: (i) receiving scientific credit, (ii) peer-training in new concepts and methods, (iii)
developing leadership and communication skills, (iv) promoting a peer network among
ECRs, and (v) building on individual engagement and independence. We also discuss
the challenges of ECR-CDEs, which are mainly derived from the lack of independence
and instability of the participants, and we suggest mechanisms to address them, such
as resource re-allocation and communication strategies. We conclude that ECR-CDEs
can be a relevant tool to empower ECRs across disciplines by fostering their training,

Non-motor symptom burden in patients with Parkinson's disease with impulse control disorders and compulsive behaviours : results from the COPPADIS cohort
The study was aimed at analysing the frequency of impulse control disorders (ICDs) and compulsive behaviours (CBs) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and in control subjects (CS) as well as the relationship between ICDs/CBs and motor, nonmotor features and dopaminergic treatment in PD patients. Data came from COPPADIS-2015, an observational, descriptive, nationwide (Spain) study. We used the validated Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Disease-Rating Scale (QUIP-RS) for ICD/CB screening. The association between demographic data and ICDs/CBs was analyzed in both groups. In PD, this relationship was evaluated using clinical features and treatment-related data. As result, 613 PD patients (mean age 62.47 ± 9.09 years, 59.87% men) and 179 CS (mean age 60.84 ± 8.33 years, 47.48% men) were included. ICDs and CBs were more frequent in PD (ICDs 12.7% vs. 1.6%, p < 0.001; CBs 7.18% vs. 1.67%, p = 0.01). PD patients had more frequent previous ICDs history, premorbid impulsive personality and antidepressant treatment (p < 0.05) compared with CS. In PD, patients with ICDs/CBs presented younger age at disease onset, more frequent history of previous ICDs and premorbid personality (p < 0.05), as well as higher comorbidity with nonmotor symptoms, including depression and poor quality of life. Treatment with dopamine agonists increased the risk of ICDs/CBs, being dose dependent (p < 0.05). As conclusions, ICDs and CBs were more frequent in patients with PD than in CS. More nonmotor symptoms were present in patients with PD who had ICDs/CBs compared with those without. Dopamine agonists have a prominent effect on ICDs/CBs, which could be influenced by dose

Ricardo García Cárcel (Requena, 1948) estudió Historia en Valencia bajo el magisterio de Joan Reglà, con quien formó parte del primer profesorado de historia moderna en la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. En esta universidad, desde hace prácticamente cincuenta años, ha desarrollado una extraordinaria labor docente y de investigación marcada por un sagaz instinto histórico, que le ha convertido en pionero de casi todo lo que ha estudiado: las Germanías, la historia de la Cataluña moderna, la Inquisición, las culturas del Siglo de Oro, la Leyenda Negra, Felipe II, Felipe V, Austrias y Borbones, la guerra de la Independencia, la historia cultural, los mitos de la historia de España... Muy pocos tienen su capacidad para reflexionar, ordenar, analizar, conceptualizar y proponer una visión amplia y llena de matices sobre el pasado y las interpretaciones historiográficas. A su laboriosidad inimitable se añade una dedicación sin límites en el asesoramiento de alumnos e investigadores e impulsando revistas, dosieres, seminarios o publicaciones colectivas. Una mínima correspondencia a su generosidad lo constituye este volumen a manera de ineludible agradecimiento
