Recovering Latent Signals from a Mixture of Measurements using a Gaussian Process Prior

In sensing applications, sensors cannot always measure the latent quantity of interest at the required resolution, sometimes they can only acquire a blurred version of it due the sensor's transfer function. To recover latent signals when only noisy mixed measurements of the signal are available, we propose the Gaussian process mixture of measurements (GPMM), which models the latent signal as a Gaussian process (GP) and allows us to perform Bayesian inference on such signal conditional to a set of noisy mixture of measurements. We describe how to train GPMM, that is, to find the hyperparameters of the GP and the mixing weights, and how to perform inference on the latent signal under GPMM; additionally, we identify the solution to the underdetermined linear system resulting from a sensing application as a particular case of GPMM. The proposed model is validated in the recovery of three signals: a smooth synthetic signal, a real-world heart-rate time series and a step function, where GPMM outperformed the standard GP in terms of estimation error, uncertainty representation and recovery of the spectral content of the latent signal.Comment: Published on IEEE Signal Processing Letters on Dec. 201

Educación y medios audiovisuales: una reflexión sistémica para su implementación, fortalecimiento y sostenibilidad

La implementación de propuestas educativas, apoyadas en el uso de medios audiovisuales (MA) es abundante. Sin embargo, más allá del desarrollo de buenas prácticas, se asoma también un complejo proceso de producción, funcionalidad y sostenibilidad, el cual termina por definir su éxito o fracaso a largo plazo. Por otra parte, condiciones como el conocimiento de la narrativa audiovisual, la definición de los propósitos del producto y la correcta identificación del público, ponen de manifiesto la confrontación con una realidad que compromete la reflexión y el análisis en distintos niveles. En tal sentido, el presente trabajo desarrolla una reflexión sobre este campo en tres direcciones: bibliográfica, disciplinar y sistémica; con la finalidad de concebir, respectivamente, mejores prácticas educativas sostenidas en el uso de MA; mayor impacto en la comunidad del propio centro educativo; y disposición de estrategias para conformar el un mutuo entendimiento, que dispongan la sostenibilidad de su propia producción

Fractal terrains generation for 3D scenes, with OpenGL and Vulkan

Se incorpora también un movimiento físico del modelo sobre las superficies generadas, mediante el cálculo de puntos de colisión entre ellos. Además, la aplicación permite utilizar como API de programación gráfica OpenGL y Vulkan, con GLSL como shading language.It has been developed an interactive application in order to render fractal terrains through the Ray Marching algorithm and vertex mesh models using the classic rendering pipeline. Collision points between them can be calculated, allowing a simple, physical movement of the model upon the created surfaces. Comparative analysis of COPD associated with tobacco smoking, biomass smoke exposure or both

Correction: https://doi.org/10.1186/s12931-018-0765-4Background: Exposure to noxious gases and particles contained in both tobacco smoking (TS) and biomass smoke (BS) are well recognized environmental risk factors for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is characterized by an abnormal inflammatory response, both in the pulmonary and systemic compartments. The differential effects of TS, BS or their combined exposure have not been well characterized yet. This study sought to compare the lung function characteristics and systemic inflammatory response in COPD patients exposed to TS, BS or their combination. Methods: Sociodemographic, clinical and lung functional parameters were compared across 49 COPD patients with a history of smoking and no BS exposure (TS COPD), 31 never-smoker COPD patients with BS exposure (BS COPD), 46 COPD patients with a combined exposure (TS + BS COPD) and 52 healthy controls (HC) who have never been exposed neither to TS or BS. Blood cell counts, C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen and immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels were quantified in all four groups. Results: TS + BS COPD patients exhibited significantly lower oxygen saturation than the rest of groups (p < 0.01). Spirometry and diffusing capacity were significantly higher in BS than in TS or TS + BS patients. CRP levels were significantly higher in TS COPD patients than in BS COPD group (p < 0.05), whereas fibrinogen was raised in COPD patients with a history of smoking (TS and TS + BS) when compared to control subjects (p < 0.01). Finally, COPD patients with BS exposure (BS and BS + TS groups) showed higher IgE levels than TS and HC (p < 0.05). Conclusions: There are significant physiological and inflammatory differences between COPD patients with TS, BS and TS + BS exposures. The latter had worse blood oxygenation, whereas the raised levels of IgE in BS exposed patients suggests a differential Th2 systemic inflammatory pattern triggered by this pollutant

The influence of time pressure on the selection of mediation strategies

En este trabajo se pretende comprobar en qué medida la Presión Temporal determina la elección de estrategias de mediación. Tomando como referencia los supuestos defendidos por el Modelo de Carnevale (1986) se plantea que cuando los mediadores actúan condicionados por una Alta Presión Temporal emplearán un mayor número de estrategias de Presión. La razón de tal comportamiento se debe, según Carnevale (1986), a que el interés del mediador por el acuerdo y/o la percepción del Campo común disminuyen con el paso del tiempo. La metodología es de carácter experimental con un diseño 2x2x2, manipulando el Interés del mediador por el acuerdo, la Percepción de Campo Común y la Presión Temporal. Los resultados ponen de manifiesto que la Presión Temporal, operativizada según el tiempo máximo disponible para la concesión del acuerdo, no produce un incremento de las acciones de Presión. Sin embargo, se pudo constatar cómo el simple paso del tiempo, al margen del total disponible para solventar el litigio, favorecía, por sí mismo, la utilización de acciones coercitivasThe aim of this work is to examine the extent in which the Time Pressure determines the selection of mediation strategies. According to Carnevale’s Model (1986), when mediators work conditioned by high time pressure, they’ll use a greater number of pressing strategies. The cause for this behavior appears to be a decrease in the mediator’s interest and/or perception of the common ground with time. We use an experimental metodology based on a 2x2x2 design in which the mediator’s concerns for the outcomes as well as the Perception of Common Ground and Time Pressure were manipulated. Results show that Time Pressure, measured as the maximun available time to agreement, dos not produce an increment of pressing strategies. However, the simple pass of time, independently of the available amount of time to resolve the litigation, determined per se the use of coercitive actionsS

ETCS On-board Unit Safety Testing: Saboteurs, Testing Strategy and Results

It is necessary to verify the faults tolerance of the European Train Control System (ETCS) on-board unit even if these faults are uncommon. Traditional test methods defined and used in ETCS do not allow to check this, so it is necessary to develop a new mechanism of tests. This paper presents the design and implementation of a saboteur applied to the railway sector. The main purpose of the saboteur is the fault injection in the communication interfaces. By means of a virtual laboratory it is possible to simulate actual train journeys to test the ETCS on-board unit. Making use of the saboteurs and the virtual laboratory it is possible to analyse the behaviour of the train in the presence of unexpected faults, and to verify that the decisions taken are correct to ensure the required safety level. Therefore, this work shows a testing strategy based on different kinds of train journeys when faults are injected, and the analysis of the results.</p

Usualmente en el mercado se acostumbra a vender y arrendar oficinas en casco gris, es decir sin implementar, tan solo con los ba?os y acometida de energ?a y agua. Lo cual conlleva a que el cliente usuario tenga que llevar a cabo todas las actividades de poner la oficina en marcha, tareas como arquitectura, electricidad, data, aire acondicionado, sistema contra incendio, inyecci?n y extracci?n de aire, sistemas de seguridad entre otros. Estas tareas son de alta complejidad y pueden resultar siendo muy costosas y sorprender el flujo de caja de la organizaci?n. Nuestra propuesta conlleva a evitarle al usuario este problema, resolv?rselo de una manera que le facilite su flujo de caja y le evite p?rdidas de tiempo e incrementos o sobre costos.
