    Enhancement of a commercial multicopter for research in autonomous navigation

    Multicopters are lightweight and maneuverable aerial vehicles yet unable to carry heavy payloads, such as large sensors or computers required for indoor autonomous navigation. Therefore, localization is usually performed by using vision-based solutions employing of either lightweight on-board cameras or external fixed cameras and a ground station for data-processing. Nevertheless, the current tendency is to use a low-power on-board computers to perform all computation on the multicopter itself. This paper covers the enhancement of a commercial multicopter, also called drone, with computation ability and sensorial devices for autonomous flight without the need of a ground-station. We describe the hardware and software integrated into the drone, which will be used for the future development of 6DoF navigation algorithms. The resulting system is able to work with most standard sensors and has the possibility to change them as needed. Also, we demonstrate the correct behavior of the drone by using a test navigation program that autonomously follows a moving beacon at constant distance and controlled altitude using an RGB-D camera and a sonar.Universidad de Málaga.     Multi-Omic Epigenetic-Based Model Reveals Key Molecular Mechanisms Associated with Palmitic Acid Lipotoxicity in Human Astrocyte

    Astrocytes are critical for the metabolic, structural and functional modulatory support of the brain. Lipotoxicity or high levels of saturated fatty acid as Palmitate (PA) has been associated with neurotoxicity, the loss or change of astrocytic functionality, and the etiology and progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson or Alzheimer. Several molecular mechanisms of PA’s effect in astrocytes have been described, yet the role of epigenetic regulation and chromatin architecture have not been fully explored. In this study, we developed a multi-omic epigenetic-based model to identify the molecular mechanisms of lipotoxic PA activity in astrocytes. We used data from nine histone modifications, location of Topological Associated Domains (TADs) and transcriptional CTCF regions, where we identified the basal astrocyte epigenetic landscape. Moreover, we integrated transcriptomic data of astrocytic cellular response to PA with the epigenetic multi-omic model to identify lipotoxic-induced molecular mechanisms. The multi-omic model showed that chromatin conformation in astrocytes treated with PA have response genes located within shared topological domains, in which most of them also showed either repressive or enhancing marks in the Chip-Seq enrichment, reinforcing the idea that epigenetic regulation has a huge impact on the lipotoxic mechanisms of PA in the brain

    Critical thermal maxima differ between groups of insect pollinators and their foraging times: Implications for their responses to climate change

    Insects perform essential roles within ecosystems and can be vulnerable to climate change because of their small body size and limited capacity to regulate body temperature. Several groups of insects, such as bees and flies, are important pollinators of wild and cultivated plants. However, aspects of their thermal biology remain poorly studied, which limits predictions of their responses to climate change. We assessed the critical thermal maximum (CTMax) of bees and flies visiting flowers in urban and periurban areas in tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. We also assessed the effect of the foraging time of the day on CTMax. Overall, we found that bees displayed higher CTMax than flies. Flies foraging in the morning and afternoon displayed similar CTMax while bees in the morning displayed a higher CTMax than in the afternoon. The results of this study suggest differences in the vulnerability to climate change between these two major groups of pollinators, with flies being more at risk

    La Imagen y la Narrativa como Herramientas para el Abordaje Psicosocial en Escenarios de Violencia, Región del Sumapaz - Dpto. de Cundinamarca

    En el presente trabajo el grupo de estudiantes del diplomado de profundización acompañamiento psicosocial en escenarios de violencia tomaran como referencia casos de la vida real de una serie de personas y comunidades que han sido sometidas a eventos traumáticos y a la violación de los derechos humanos debido a la incursión de fuerzas armadas, grupos organizados ilegales y fuerza pública en actos violentos. Los estudiantes realizaran un análisis desde la perspectiva psicológica donde el rol del psicólogo social es de vital importancia, para abordar dichas problemáticas de violencia y violación de los derechos humanos que han experimentado los individuos que dejan un marco de vulnerabilidad en cada contexto y que desarrolla nuevas problemáticas, desde lo social, político y cultural hace más de 60 años. Los integrantes del curso de profundización acompañamiento psicosocial en escenarios de violencia, luego del análisis de los casos, proponen una serie de acciones que generen procesos de acompañamiento psicosocial y potencie las redes de apoyo a si como la unión de las comunidades, que disminuya el impacto sobre las salud mental y emocional del individuo, su familia o su comunidad y le permita ejercer su identidad política, teniendo en cuenta que cada persona percibe de una manera diferente y los recursos para el afrontamiento de los eventos traumatizantes permitan potenciar al individuo o a su comunidad. Para el caso cada participante realiza una serie de acciones tales como, valoración del impacto generado a la comunidad por los sucesos violentos, reconstruir subjetividades que permitan pasar de víctima a sobreviviente, fijar proyectos de acuerdo a políticas públicas, trabajar narrativas, restablecer emociones desde diversos lenguajes, entre otros tomando como referencia postulados teóricos.In this work, the group of students of the diplomad in deepening psychosocial accompaniment in violence scenarios will take as reference real-life cases of a series of people and communities that have been subjected to traumatic events and the violation of human rights due to the incursion of armed forces, illegal organized groups and public force in violent acts. The students will carry out an analysis from the psychological perspective where the role of the social psychologist is of vital importance, to address these issues of violence and violation of human rights that individuals have experienced who leave a framework of vulnerability in each context and who develop new problematic, from the social, political and cultural point of view, over 60 years ago. The members of the course of deepening psychosocial accompaniment in violence scenarios, after analyzing the cases, propose a series of actions that generate psychosocial accompaniment processes and strengthen support networks such as the union of communities, which reduces the impact on the mental and emotional health of the individual, his family or his community and allows him to exercise his political identity, taking into account that each person perceives in a different way and the resources for coping with traumatic events allow empowering the individual or their community . In this case, each participant carries out a series of actions such as evaluating the impact generated by violent events on the community, reconstructing subjectivities that allow passing from victim to survivor, setting projects according to public policies, working on narratives, restoring emotions from different languages, among others taking theoretical postulates as a reference

    Incidence and prevalence of acute hepatitis E virus infection in patients with suspected Drug-Induced Liver Injury in the Spanish DILI Registry

    Background and Aims: Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) presents with a wide phenotypic spectrum requiring an extensive differential diagnosis. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is not systematically ruled out during acute hepatitis assessment in Spain. The aims of this study were to establish the role of HEV infection and its phenotypic presentation in patients initially suspected of DILI and to determine the anti-HEV seroprevalence rate. Methods: An analysis of 265 patients with suspected DILI and considered for enrolment in the Spanish DILI Registry and 108 controls with normal liver profiles was undertaken. Anti-HEV Immunoglobulin (Ig) G antibodies were analyzed in serum from all subjects. In those with serum samples extracted within 6 months from liver damage onset (n=144), HEV antigen (Ag) and anti- HEV IgM antibodies were tested in duplicate by ELISA. In addition, RT-PCR was performed externally in 8 patients. Results: Out of 144 patients, 12 (8%) were positive for anti-HEV IgM, mean age 61 years. Underlying hepatic diseases (OR=23.4, p20 folds upper limit of normal (OR=10.9, p=0.002) were associated with the diagnosis of acute hepatitis E. The overall anti-HEV IgG seroprevalence rate was 35%, evenly distributed between patients with suspected DILI (34%), and controls (39%). Conclusions: HEV seroprevalence and acute hepatitis E rates are relatively high in Spain.     GDF-15 is a biomarker for mitochondrial diseases. We investigated the application of GDF-15 as biomarker of disease severity and response to deoxynucleoside treatment in patients with thymidine kinase 2 (TK2) deficiency and compared it to FGF-21. GDF-15 and FGF-21 were measured in serum from 24 patients with TK2 deficiency treated 1–49 months with oral deoxynucleosides. Patients were grouped according to age at treatment and biomarkers were analyzed at baseline and various time points after treatment initiation. GDF-15 was elevated on average 30-fold in children and 6-fold in adults before the start of treatment. There was a significant correlation between basal GDF-15 and severity based on pretreatment distance walked (6MWT) and weight (BMI). During treatment, GDF-15 significantly declined, and the decrease was accompanied by relevant clinical improvements. The decline was greater in the paediatric group, which included the most severe patients and showed the greatest clinical benefit, than in the adult patients. The decline of FGF-21 was less prominent and consistent. GDF-15 is a potential biomarker of severity and of therapeutic response for patients with TK2 deficiency. In addition, we show evidence of clinical benefit of deoxynucleoside treatment, especially when treatment is initiated at an early age

    Comprehensive analysis and insights gained from long-term experience of the Spanish DILI Registry

    Background & aims: Prospective drug-induced liver injury (DILI) registries are important sources of information on idiosyncratic DILI. We aimed to present a comprehensive analysis of 843 patients with DILI enrolled into the Spanish DILI Registry over a 20-year time period. Methods: Cases were identified, diagnosed and followed prospectively. Clinical features, drug information and outcome data were collected. Results: A total of 843 patients, with a mean age of 54 years (48% females), were enrolled up to 2018. Hepatocellular injury was associated with younger age (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] per year 0.983; 95% CI 0.974-0.991) and lower platelet count (aOR per unit 0.996; 95% CI 0.994-0.998). Anti-infectives were the most common causative drug class (40%). Liver-related mortality was more frequent in patients with hepatocellular damage aged ≥65 years (p = 0.0083) and in patients with underlying liver disease (p = 0.0221). Independent predictors of liver-related death/transplantation included nR-based hepatocellular injury, female sex, higher onset aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and bilirubin values. nR-based hepatocellular injury was not associated with 6-month overall mortality, for which comorbidity burden played a more important role. The prognostic capacity of Hy's law varied between causative agents. Empirical therapy (corticosteroids, ursodeoxycholic acid and MARS) was prescribed to 20% of patients.     Computational Approaches to Explainable Artificial Intelligence:Advances in Theory, Applications and Trends

    Deep Learning (DL), a groundbreaking branch of Machine Learning (ML), has emerged as a driving force in both theoretical and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI). DL algorithms, rooted in complex and non-linear artificial neural systems, excel at extracting high-level features from data. DL has demonstrated human-level performance in real-world tasks, including clinical diagnostics, and has unlocked solutions to previously intractable problems in virtual agent design, robotics, genomics, neuroimaging, computer vision, and industrial automation. In this paper, the most relevant advances from the last few years in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and several applications to neuroscience, neuroimaging, computer vision, and robotics are presented, reviewed and discussed. In this way, we summarize the state-of-the-art in AI methods, models and applications within a collection of works presented at the 9 International Conference on the Interplay between Natural and Artificial Computation (IWINAC). The works presented in this paper are excellent examples of new scientific discoveries made in laboratories that have successfully transitioned to real-life applications

    CIBERER : Spanish national network for research on rare diseases: A highly productive collaborative initiative

    Altres ajuts: Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII); Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación.CIBER (Center for Biomedical Network Research; Centro de Investigación Biomédica En Red) is a public national consortium created in 2006 under the umbrella of the Spanish National Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCIII). This innovative research structure comprises 11 different specific areas dedicated to the main public health priorities in the National Health System. CIBERER, the thematic area of CIBER focused on rare diseases (RDs) currently consists of 75 research groups belonging to universities, research centers, and hospitals of the entire country. CIBERER's mission is to be a center prioritizing and favoring collaboration and cooperation between biomedical and clinical research groups, with special emphasis on the aspects of genetic, molecular, biochemical, and cellular research of RDs. This research is the basis for providing new tools for the diagnosis and therapy of low-prevalence diseases, in line with the International Rare Diseases Research Consortium (IRDiRC) objectives, thus favoring translational research between the scientific environment of the laboratory and the clinical setting of health centers. In this article, we intend to review CIBERER's 15-year journey and summarize the main results obtained in terms of internationalization, scientific production, contributions toward the discovery of new therapies and novel genes associated to diseases, cooperation with patients' associations and many other topics related to RD research
