Distribución geográfica y temporal de incendios en colombia utilizando datos de anomalías térmicas
Patrones de distribución en el tiempo y en el espacio de las anomalías térmicasdetectadas por el sensor MODIS son analizadas para el territorio colombiano entrediciembre 2000 y Febrero 2009. Se presenta un estudio de la dinámica inter-anuale intra-anual de la superfi cie afectada por los incendios para distintas coberturasde vegetación. También se analiza los patrones al interior de áreas protegidas,reservas forestales, reservas indígenas y territorio de comunidades negras, con lafi nalidad de analizar el posible rol como barrera a los incendios de estas fi guras demanejo en Colombia. Adicionalmente se analiza la distribución temporal y espacialpor regiones naturales, Corporaciones Autónomas Regionales y Departamentos.La información proporcionada por este tipo de análisis puede ser de gran utilidadpara la toma de decisiones en el manejo de los recursos naturales en el país. Losresultados obtenidos indican que los Llanos de Colombia es el área más afectadaanualmente por los incendios, seguida del Caribe y de la zona Andina, en particularel piedemonte amazónico. Estos análisis muestran el potencial para identifi car ymodelar la distribución de los incendios en el país y la identifi cación de patronesen función tanto de las características de la vegetación como del manejo que se estérealizando en un lugar determinado y pueden ser de utilidad para mejorar la gestiónde riesgo de incendios en el país, así como para entender los cambios de uso que sehan dado en Colombia en la última década
Foliar heavy metals and stable isotope (δ13C, δ15N) profiles as reliable urban pollution biomonitoring tools
Anthropogenic heavy metal pollution is an important health issue in urban areas, and therefore rapid and inexpensive monitoring in time and space is desirable. This study aimed (i) to assess the suitability of Tilia cordata leaves as a valuable heavy metal bioindicator, including seasonal changes in concentrations and (ii) to evaluate the use of leaf carbon and nitrogen isotope composition (δ13C and δ15N) as novel indicators of urban heavy metal pollution. Leaves were collected from three different pollution intensity locations (Bilbao, Vitoria, and Muskiz) in the Basque Country (northern Spain). Analysis of leaf heavy metals related to traffic emissions and δ13C and δ15N determinations were carried out during July-October 2018. Leaf samples from Bilbao, the most populated and traffic-intense location, showed the highest concentration of heavy metals (mainly from polluted air). Additionally, the two urban areas, Bilbao and Vitoria, showed stronger correlation between these heavy metals, indicating a traffic-related source of emissions. The source of contamination (soil or air) in relation to elements and optimal sampling time is discussed herein. On the other hand, Pearson correlation analysis revealed significant trends between leaf δ13C and δ15N and the studied heavy metals, especially Pb, Cr and Cd, supporting the hypothesis of δ13C and δ15N as tools to distinguish locations according to their heavy metal pollution levels. To our knowledge, this is the first time that δ13C and δ15N have been used as monitoring tools in heavy metal pollution and consequently more research is still needed to calibrate this tool through extensive vegetation screening.This research was supported by the Spanish Government [AGL 2015-64481-C2-1-R] and the Basque Government [UPV/EHU-GV IT-1018-16]. Best practices for expansion of smoke-free and aerosol-free environments in Europe: Protocol for the consultation to experts
Smoke-free legislation has been shown to positively impact reducing secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, especially in countries that have implemented comprehensive legislation rather than partial bans. Also, secondhand aerosols (SHA) that come from the heating of tobacco or liquids, with or without nicotine, in electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have been proven to increase levels of harmful substances in the air. Therefore, protection against SHS and SHA exposure and expansion of smoke- and aerosol-free environments (SAFE) should be taken into account when creating or trying to expand or enforce clean air policies. This article aims to present the protocol for a consultation with experts on tobacco and nicotine control in order to identify best practices, barriers, and opportunities for the expansion of SAFE in Europe. We identified experts among policymakers, researchers, and tobacco regulators in European countries and invited them to participate in the consultation by completing an online survey designed, programmed, and pilot-tested using Survey Monkey. The responses to the questionnaire contained quantitative and qualitative information that was thematically analyzed. The experts’ consultation allowed us to produce a report on barriers and opportunities for SAFE, a report and a position paper on SAFE best practices, a web-based repository of best practices, and a weight of evidence paper that assembles evidence supporting the expansion of SAFE on indoor and outdoor spaces
Central Ceramide-Induced Hypothalamic Lipotoxicity and ER Stress Regulate Energy Balance
Hypothalamic endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is a key mechanism leading to obesity. Here, we demonstrate that ceramides induce lipotoxicity and hypothalamic ER stress, leading to sympathetic inhibition, reduced brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis, and weight gain. Genetic overexpression of the chaperone GRP78/BiP (glucoseregulated protein 78 kDa/binding immunoglobulin protein) in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH) abolishes ceramide action by reducing hypothalamic ER stress and increasing BAT thermogenesis, which leads to weight loss and improved glucose homeostasis. The pathophysiological relevance of this mechanism is demonstrated in obese Zucker rats, which show increased hypothalamic ceramide levels and ER stress. Overexpression of GRP78 in the VMH of these animals reduced body weight by increasing BAT thermogenesis as well as decreasing leptin and insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis. Overall, these data identify a triangulated signaling network involving central ceramides, hypothalamic lipotoxicity/ER stress, and BAT thermogenesis as a pathophysiological mechanism of obesity
Spontaneous formation of spiral-like patterns with distinct periodic physical properties by confined electrodeposition of Co-In disks
Spatio-temporal patterns are ubiquitous in different areas of materials science and biological systems. However, typically the motifs in these types of systems present a random distribution with many possible different structures. Herein, we demonstrate that controlled spatio-temporal patterns, with reproducible spiral-like shapes, can be obtained by electrodeposition of Co-In alloys inside a confined circular geometry (i.e., in disks commensurate with the typical size of the spatio-temporal features). These patterns are mainly of compositional nature, i.e., with virtually no topographic features. Interestingly, the local changes in composition lead to a periodic modulation of the physical (electric, magnetic and mechanical) properties. Namely, the Co-rich areas show higher saturation magnetization and electrical conductivity and are mechanically harder than the In-rich ones. Thus, this work reveals that confined electrodeposition of this binary system constitutes an effective procedure to attain template-free magnetic, electric and mechanical surface patterning with specific and reproducible shapes

Angiocrine polyamine production regulates adiposity.
Reciprocal interactions between endothelial cells (ECs) and adipocytes are fundamental to maintain white adipose tissue (WAT) homeostasis, as illustrated by the activation of angiogenesis upon WAT expansion, a process that is impaired in obesity. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the crosstalk between ECs and adipocytes remain poorly understood. Here, we show that local production of polyamines in ECs stimulates adipocyte lipolysis and regulates WAT homeostasis in mice. We promote enhanced cell-autonomous angiogenesis by deleting Pten in the murine endothelium. Endothelial Pten loss leads to a WAT-selective phenotype, characterized by reduced body weight and adiposity in pathophysiological conditions. This phenotype stems from enhanced fatty acid β-oxidation in ECs concomitant with a paracrine lipolytic action on adipocytes, accounting for reduced adiposity. Combined analysis of murine models, isolated ECs and human specimens reveals that WAT lipolysis is mediated by mTORC1-dependent production of polyamines by ECs. Our results indicate that angiocrine metabolic signals are important for WAT homeostasis and organismal metabolism.We thank members of the Endothelial Pathobiology and Microenvironment Group for

A colorectal cancer genome-wide association study in a Spanish cohort identifies two variants associated with colorectal cancer risk at 1p33 and 8p12
Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a disease of complex aetiology, with much of the expected inherited risk being due to several common low risk variants. Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have identified 20 CRC risk variants. Nevertheless, these have only been able to explain part of the missing heritability. Moreover, these signals have only been inspected in populations of Northern European origin. Results: Thus, we followed the same approach in a Spanish cohort of 881 cases and 667 controls. Sixty-four variants at 24 loci were found to be associated with CRC at p-values <10-5. We therefore evaluated the 24 loci in another Spanish replication cohort (1481 cases and 1850 controls). Two of these SNPs, rs12080929 at 1p33 (Preplication=0.042; Ppooled=5.523x10-03; OR (CI95%)=0.866(0.782-0.959)) and rs11987193 at 8p12 (Preplication=0.039; Ppooled=6.985x10-5; OR (CI95%)=0.786(0.705-0.878)) were replicated in the second Phase, although they did not reach genome-wide statistical significance. Conclusions: We have performed the first CRC GWAS in a Southern European population and by these means we were able to identify two new susceptibility variants at 1p33 and 8p12 loci. These two SNPs are located near the SLC5A9 and DUSP4 loci, respectively, which could be good functional candidates for the association signals. We therefore believe that these two markers constitute good candidates for CRC susceptibility loci and should be further evaluated in other larger datasets. Moreover, we highlight that were these two SNPs true susceptibility variants, they would constitute a decrease in the CRC missing heritability fraction
Lipid-lowering drugs in ischaemic heart disease : a quasi-experimental uncontrolled before-and-after study of the effectiveness of clinical practice guidelines
Background: Cardiovascular diseases(CVD), specifically ischaemic heart disease(IHD), are the main causes of death in industrialized countries. Statins are not usually prescribed in the most appropriate way. To ensure the correct prescription of these drugs, it is necessary to develop, disseminate and implement clinical practice guidelines(CPGs), and subsequently evaluate them. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of consensual Lipid-lowering drugs (LLD) prescription guidelines in hospital and primary care settings, to improve the control of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in patients with IHD in the Terres de l'Ebre region covered by the Catalonian Health Institute. Secondary bjectives are to assess the improvement of the prescription profile of these LLDs, to assess cardiovascular morbimortality and the professional profile and participant centre characteristics that govern the control of LDL-C. Methods/Design Design: Quasi-experimental uncontrolled before and after study. The intervention consists of the delivery of training strategies for guideline implementation (classroom clinical sessions and on-line courses) aimed at primary care and hospital physicians. The improvement in the control of LDL-C levels in the 3,402 patients with IHD in our territory is then assessed. Scope: Primary care physicians from 11 basic health areas(BHAs) and two hospital services (internal medicine and cardiology). Sample: 3,402 patients registered with IHD in the database of the Catalan Institute of Health(E-cap) before December 2008 and patients newly diagnosed during 2009-2010. Variables: Percentage of patients achieving good control of LDL-C, measured in milligrams per decilitre. The aim of the intervention is to achieve levels of LDL-C < 100 mg/dl in patients with IHD. Secondary variables measure type and time of diagnosis of IHD, type and dose of prescribed cholesterol-lowering drugs, level of physician participation in training activities and their professional profile. Discussion: The development of prescription guidelines previously agreed by various medical specialists involved in treating IHD patients have usually improved drug prescription. The guideline presented in this study aims to improve the control of LDL-C by training physicians through presential and on-line courses on the dissemination of this guideline, and by providing feedback on their personal results a year after this training intervention
