Heterogeneous distribution in ATLAS
The ATLAS platform allows unsophisticated programmers to include advanced features in their applications with no or very
little extra information and effort. These features include network distribution of cooperating processes, a powerful
macro-language, a flexible journaling system and some other mechanisms directly related to graphics applications problems. In
this report we describe how ATLAS is able to distribute the application processes among different architectures without
needing a previous configuration information of the available processes for each architecture.Postprint (published version
Human resources and manufacturing: where and when should they be aligned?
Purpose – The aim of this study is to analyse the effect that a horizontal fit between two functions (human resources and manufacturing) has on firm performance, distinguishing between fit in objectives and fit in achievements.
Design/methodology/approach – This study uses 144 double surveys, addressed to two different respondents per company. Structural equations modelling was used to investigate the mediating role of fit in achievements in the relationship between fit in objectives and performance.
Findings – The study provides evidence of the particular way in which the two components of horizontal fit that we distinguish (fit in objectives and fit in achievements) impact on performance: fit in objectives has an indirect effect on performance, which is fully mediated by the fit in achievements. The results also show that environmental dynamism has a significant impact on both the advantages and drawbacks of fit.
Practical implications – By highlighting the importance of both levels of horizontal fit and distinguishing between them, this paper calls upon human resources (HR) and manufacturing managers to show a greater understanding of the key dimensions common to both areas.
Originality/value – This study analyses horizontal fit by developing a framework of priorities in HR management (HRM) similar to that traditionally used in production management. In particular, it adapts the framework of production competence to the area of HRM to study the fit between the two functional strategies. This study also supports the value chain model proposed by Porter (1985)
Human resources strategy as a catalyst for the success of the competitive strategy: an analysis based on alignment
Competitive strategy is one of the key factors traditionally related to performance, but research explaining the mechanisms through which this strategy improves business results is scant. This study aims to shed light on this relationship by analysing human resources management (HRM) strategy as an essential tool for transforming business strategy into results.
Focussing on two generic competitive strategies, we establish hypotheses on the need for alignment among four echelons: business strategy, HRM system objectives, HRM system capabilities and business performance. We test these hypotheses with structural equation modelling techniques using data provided by 204 industrial companies.
The results show that to get the most out of a competitive strategy based on quality differentiation, HRM system objectives and capabilities must be focussed on quality. In the same way, a competitive strategy based on innovation differentiation requires HRM system objectives and capabilities focussed on flexibility to achieve the maximum impact on performance. In this second case, alignment is fundamental in low dynamic environments.
This research not only provides additional evidence for the strategic relevance of the human resources function but also reveals the potential benefits of focussing on objectives and capabilities rather than on practices. Moreover, it shows that the role of HRM objectives and capabilities in the implementation of a competitive strategy can be shaped by factors beyond the company’s control, such as environmental dynamism
Search and selection of information about physics and chemistry by means of digital resources like Wikipedia carried out by secondary students
This paper describes the information search and selection skills, as established by the digital competence, of a
secondary education students group. It aims to answer what are the digital resources they use, their reasons for using
them, and the use and reliability given to the information obtained from Wikipedia. In order to achieve these goals, the
literature about digital competence, ICT and Wikipedia has been considered in order to design a questionnaire.
According to the answers obtained and to the literature, the use of new technologies frequently doesn´t make a
student competent in processing digital information. Moreover, the students don´t have a critical attitude about how
they have to search and select information from Internet
Preliminary results on nonparametric facial occlusion detection
The problem of face recognition has been extensively studied in the available literature, however, some aspects of this field require further research. The design and implementation of face recognition systems that can efficiently handle unconstrained conditions (e.g. pose variations, illumination, partial occlusion...) is still an area under active research. This work focuses on the design of a new nonparametric occlusion detection technique. In addition, we present some preliminary results that indicate that the proposed technique might be useful to face recognition systems, allowing them to dynamically discard occluded face parts
Assessing the value of the information provision for enhancing the autonomy of mobility impaired users. Madrid pilot Site Study.
A City is the space where every person acquires the citizen condition, which demands access to multiple services and facilities, and develops social relations in a free and equal condition of options. A lack of accessibility limits independency and autonomy. Thus, the relationship between “sustainable development” and “accessibility for all” becomes clearer, and both goals reinforce each other. In this sense, information plays a key role in order to overcome existing barriers, specially for people who rarely use public transport, have impaired mobility, or make a particular journey for the first time. The impact and benefits is linked with public transport as a “facilitator” of mobility, and, in particular, for the aim of intermodality. The usefulness of information that should be provided (both the information itself and how is offered) to mobility impaired users (MI users) is discussed on this paper based on following of the ASK-IT project that has being carry out on Madrid. The work was done in close cooperation with representatives of all different types of MI user groups
