No AGN evidence in NGC 1614 from deep radio VLBI observations
We present deep dual-band 5.0- and 8.4-GHz European VLBI Network (EVN) observations of NGC 1614, a local luminous infrared galaxy with a powerful circumnuclear starburst ring, and whose nuclear engine origin is still controversial. We aim at detecting and characterizing compact radio structures both in the nuclear region and in the circumnuclear ring. We do not find any compact source in the central 200 pc region, setting a very tight 5s upper limit of 3.7 × 1036 and 5.8 × 1036 erg s-1, at 5.0 and 8.4 GHz, respectively. However, we report a clear detection at both frequencies of a compact structure in the circumnuclear ring, 190 pc to the north of the nucleus, whose luminosity and spectral index are compatible with a core-collapse supernova, giving support to the high star formation rate in the ring. Our result favours the pure starburst scenario, even for the nucleus of NGC 1614, and shows the importance of radio VLBI (very long baseline interferometry) observations when dealing with the obscured environments of dusty galaxies
Petrophysical characterization of the Dolomitic Member of the Boñar Formation (Upper Cretaceous; Duero Basin, Spain) as a potential CO2 reservoir

According to the existing data, the Dolomitic Member of this formation appears to be the most suitable for geological storage of CO2.
The main objective of this study is to find evidence to support, clarify and specify –at an initial level– the potential of the Dolomitic Member of the Boñar Formation as a geological reservoir.
The study covers density, porosity and permeability tests on samples obtained from the outcrop of the succession near the village of Boñar (León). According to the analysis and interpretation of the mentioned petrophysical properties, the porosity of the Dolomitic Member is within the acceptable range for CO2 geological storage, but the permeability values are far too low. This minimizes the possibilities of the Dolomitic Member –and probably of the whole Boñar Formation– to become an appropriate CO2 reservoir
Peer reviewe
DNA barcoding allows identification of undescribed crab megalopas from the open sea
Megalopas of 15 brachyuran crab species collected in the open sea plankton, and unknown until now, were identified using DNA barcodes (COI and 16S rRNA). Specimens belonging to the families Portunidae, Pseudorhombilidae and Xanthidae (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura), and corresponding to the species Achelous floridanus, Arenaeus mexicanus, Callinectes amnicola, C. arcuatus, C. ornatus, C. toxones, Charybdis (Charybdis) hellerii, Portunus hastatus, Thalamita admete, Scopolius nuttingi, Etisus odhneri, Liomera cinctimanus, Neoliomera cerasinus, Pseudoliomera variolosa, and Williamstimpsonia stimpsoni, are described and illustrated, and compared with other congeneric species previously described. We also provide a new geographical record for N. cerasinus and the most remarkable features for each species

A High Spatial Resolution Mid-Infrared Spectroscopic Study of the Nuclei and Star-Forming Regions in Luminous Infrared Galaxies
We present a high spatial (diffraction-limited) resolution (~0.3")
mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopic study of the nuclei and star-forming regions
of 4 local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) using T-ReCS on the Gemini South
telescope. We investigate the spatial variations of the features seen in the
N-band spectra of LIRGs on scales of ~100 pc, which allow us to separate the
AGN emission from that of the star formation (SF). We compare our Gemini T-ReCS
nuclear and integrated spectra of LIRGs with those obtained with Spitzer IRS.
The 9.7um silicate absorption feature is weaker in the nuclei of the LIRGs than
in the surrounding regions. This is probably due to the either clumpy or
compact environment of the central AGN or young, nuclear starburst. We find
that the [NeII] luminosity surface density is tightly and directly correlated
with that of Pa-alpha for the LIRG star-forming regions (slope of 1.00+-0.02).
Although the 11.3um PAH feature shows also a trend with Pa-alpha, this is not
common for all the regions. We also find that the [NeII]\Pa-alpha ratio does
not depend on the Pa-alpha equivalent width (EW), i.e., on the age of the
ionizing stellar populations, suggesting that, on the scales probed here, the
[NeII] emission line is a good tracer of the SF activity in LIRGs. On the other
hand, the 11.3um PAH\Pa-alpha ratio increases for smaller values of the
Pa-alpha EW (increasing ages), indicating that the 11.3um PAH feature can also
be excited by older stars than those responsible for the Pa-alpha emission.
Additional high spatial resolution observations are essential to investigate,
in a statistical way, the star formation in local LIRGs at the smallest scales
and to probe ultimately whether they share the same physical properties as
high-z LIRGs, ULIRGs and submillimiter galaxies.Comment: 23 pages (apjstyle), 19 figures, accepted for publicacion in Ap
Loss of pancreas upon activated Wnt signaling is concomitant with emergence of gastrointestinal identity
Organ formation is achieved through the complex interplay between signaling pathways
and transcriptional cascades. The canonical Wnt signaling pathway plays multiple roles
during embryonic development including patterning, proliferation and differentiation in distinct
tissues. Previous studies have established the importance of this pathway at multiple
stages of pancreas formation as well as in postnatal organ function and homeostasis. In
mice, gain-of-function experiments have demonstrated that activation of the canonical Wnt
pathway results in pancreatic hypoplasia, a phenomenon whose underlying mechanisms
remains to be elucidated. Here, we show that ectopic activation of epithelial canonical Wnt
signaling causes aberrant induction of gastric and intestinal markers both in the pancreatic
epithelium and mesenchyme, leading to the development of gut-like features. Furthermore,
we provide evidence that β -catenin-induced impairment of pancreas formation depends on
Hedgehog signaling. Together, our data emphasize the developmental plasticity of pancreatic
progenitors and further underscore the key role of precise regulation of signaling pathways
to maintain appropriate organ boundaries
Selection of AGN candidates in the GOODS-South Field through SPITZER/MIPS 24 μm variability
We present a study of galaxies showing mid-infrared variability in data taken in the deepest Spitzer/MIPS 24 μm surveys in the Great Observatory Origins Deep Survey South field. We divide the data set in epochs and subepochs to study the long-term (months–years) and the short-term (days) variability. We use a χ2-statistics method to select active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidates with a probability ≤1 per cent that the observed variability is due to statistical errors alone. We find 39 (1.7 per cent of the parent sample) sources that show long-term variability and 55 (2.2 per cent of the parent sample) showing short-term variability. That is, 0.03 sources × arcmin−2 for both, long-term and short-term variable sources. After removing the expected number of false positives inherent to the method, the estimated percentages are 1.0 and 1.4 per cent of the parent sample for the long term and short term, respectively. We compare our candidates with AGN selected in the X-ray and radio bands, and AGN candidates selected by their IR emission. Approximately, 50 per cent of the MIPS (Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer) 24 μm variable sources would be identified as AGN with these other methods. Therefore, MIPS 24 μm variability is a new method to identify AGN candidates, possibly dust obscured and low-luminosity AGN, that might be missed by other methods. However, the contribution of the MIPS 24 μm variable identified AGN to the general AGN population is small (≤13 per cent) in GOODS-South.JG-G, AA-H, and AH-C acknowledge support from the Augusto G.
