La competencia científica en la comunidad autónoma del país vasco : del currículo al aula
A partir del Currículo Vasco para las Ciencias de la Naturaleza y la Salud en la etapa Secundaria Obligatoria, cuya novedad radica en su formulación en clave de competencias, se analizan los posteriores desarrollos del mismo ligados tanto a la evaluación diagnóstica como a los procesos de innovación en el aula. Se analiza la necesidad de un cambio metodológico en el aula y se presentan algunas de las actividades llevadas a cabo desde los Servicios de apoyo para proporcionar al profesorado claves para el desarrollo de la competencia científica en el aula. Se analizan las líneas generales y los materiales del proyecto de Educación Científica que se esta desarrollando en 30 centros de la CAPV. Asimismo, se presentan modelos de secuencias didácticas que refuerzan sobre todo las actividades de indagación y las de integración
Risk-taking attitudes of people who seek health care: An exploratory approach through lottery games using generalized estimating equations
Background: The characterization of the risk-taking attitude of individuals may be useful for planning health care interventions. It has been attempted to study expressions of risk-taking attitude and evaluate characteristics of a standard lottery game in a population that seeks health care to elicit these attitudes. Methods: Multicentric cross-sectional study. Demographic and socioe-conomic characteristics, quality of life (EuroQol-5D), and health risk behaviors were collected from 662 users of 23 health centers selected by random sampling. Risk-taking attitude was evaluated by means of a self-evaluation scale and two lotteries games (L1 and L2; L2 included the possibility of economic losses). Generalized estimating equations (GEE) explicative models were used to evaluate the variability of risk-taking attitude. Results: Nineteen percent out of interviewed people (CI95%: 15.6-22.6%) expressed a high risk appetite, but only 10.0% (CI95% 7.0 to 13.0) were classified as risk-seeking by L2. It was found association between increased risk appetite and having a better perception of health status (0.110. CI95%: 0.007-0.212) or a higher income (0.010. CI95%: 0.017-0.123) or smoking status (0.059. CI95%: 0.004-0.114). Being Spanish was associated with lower risk appetite (-0.105. CI95%: -0.005 -0.205), as being over 65 (-0.031. CI95%:- 0.061- -0.001) or a woman (-0.038. CI95%:-0.064- -0.012). The intraclass correlation coefficient for self-evaluation scale was 0.511 (95% CI: 0.372 to 0.629), 0.571 (95% CI: 0.441-0.678) for L1 and 0.349 (95% CI: 0.186-0.493) for L2. Conclusions: People who seek health care express certain inclination to risk, but this feature is attenuated when methodologies involving losses are used. Risk appetite seems greater in young people, males, people with better health, or more income, and in immigrants. Lottery games such as the proposed ones are a simple and useful tool to estimate individuals'' inclination to risk
Ultraviolet through far-infrared spatially resolved analysis of the recent star formation in M81 (NGC 3031)
The recent star formation (SF) in the early-type spiral galaxy M81 is characterized using imaging observations from the far-ultraviolet to the far-infrared. We compare these data with models of the stellar, gas, and dust emission for subgalactic regions. Our results suggest the existence of a diffuse dust emission not directly linked to the recent star formation. We find a radial decrease of the dust temperature and dust mass density, and in the attenuation of the stellar light. The IR emission in M81 can be modeled with three components: (1) cold dust with a temperature = 18 ± 2 K, concentrated near the H II regions but also presenting a diffuse distribution; (2) warm dust with = 53 ± 7 K, directly linked with the H II regions; and (3) aromatic molecules, with diffuse morphology peaking around the H II regions. We derive several relationships to obtain total IR luminosities from IR monochromatic fluxes, and we compare five different star formation rate (SFR) estimators for H II regions in M81 and M51: the UV, H alpha, and three estimators based on Spitzer data. We find that the H alpha luminosity absorbed by dust correlates tightly with the 24 mu m emission. The correlation with the total IR luminosity is not as good. Important variations from galaxy to galaxy are found when estimating the total SFR with the 24 mu m or the total IR emission alone. The most reliable estimations of the total SFRs are obtained by combining the H alpha emission (or the UV) and an IR luminosity (especially the 24 mu m emission), which probe the unobscured and obscured SF, respectively. For the entire M81 galaxy, about 50% of the total SF is obscured by dust. The percentage of obscured SF ranges from 60% in the inner regions of the galaxy to 30% in the outer zones
Hygienization and control of Diplodia seriata fungus in vine pruning waste composting and its seasonal variability in open and closed systems
After the ban on sodium arsenite, waste management alternatives to the prevalent burning method, such as the hygienization and biodegradation in solid phase by composting, are required for the pruned material from grapevines affected by various fungi. In this work the dynamics of a fungus associated with vine decay (Diplodia seriata) during the composting process of a mixture of laying hen manure and vine pruning waste (2:1 w/w) have been investigated in an open pile and a discontinuous closed biodigester. Through the optimization of the various physical–chemical parameters, hygienization of the infected waste materials was attained, yielding class-A organo-mineral fertilizers. Nevertheless, important differences in the efficiency of each system were observed: whereas in the open pile it took 10 days to control D. seriata and 35 additional composting days to achieve full inactivation, in the discontinuous biodigester the fungus was entirely inactivated within the first 3–7 days. Finally, the impact of seasonal variability was assessed and summer temperatures shown to have greater significance in the open pile
Predictive associations between lifestyle behaviours and dairy consumption: The IDEFICS study
Background and aim: Physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviours (SB) are related to obesity and cardiometabolic risk; however, the literature is controversial regarding the effect of dairy consumption on the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. The aim of this study was to assess longitudinally the relationship between specific lifestyle behaviours (PA and SB) and dairy consumption in a sample of European children and adolescents. Methods and results: Children from the IDEFICS study were included in the analyses. Two measurements, with 2 years'' interval, were conducted. A total of 1688 (50.8% boys) children provided information regarding diet, measured by a 24-h dietary recall, PA measured by accelerometers and parent-reported sedentary screen time (SST) at both time points. Different combinations of these behaviours, at each survey and over time, were derived applying specific recommendations. Multilevel ordinal logistic regression and analysis of covariance were used to assess their association with dairy consumption, adjusted for potential confounders. Differences by gender were found regarding dairy product consumption and also adherence to SB and PA recommendations at T0 and T1. Children meeting both lifestyle recommendations, at the two measurement points, had higher probability to consume more milk and yogurt and less cheese than the rest of combinations. Conclusions: These results suggest that European children with a healthy lifestyle, especially regarding PA and SB over time, consumed more milk and yogurt. This study suggests that the protective effect of specific dairy products found in literature could be partially due to the association of their consumption with specific healthy lifestyles
The ALHAMBRA survey: evolution of galaxy spectral segregation
We study the clustering of galaxies as a function of spectral type and
redshift in the range using data from the Advanced Large
Homogeneous Area Medium Band Redshift Astronomical (ALHAMBRA) survey. The data
cover 2.381 deg in 7 fields, after applying a detailed angular selection
mask, with accurate photometric redshifts [] down to
. From this catalog we draw five fixed number density,
redshift-limited bins. We estimate the clustering evolution for two different
spectral populations selected using the ALHAMBRA-based photometric templates:
quiescent and star-forming galaxies. For each sample, we measure the real-space
clustering using the projected correlation function. Our calculations are
performed over the range Mpc, allowing us to find a
steeper trend for Mpc, which is especially clear for
star-forming galaxies. Our analysis also shows a clear early differentiation in
the clustering properties of both populations: star-forming galaxies show
weaker clustering with evolution in the correlation length over the analysed
redshift range, while quiescent galaxies show stronger clustering already at
high redshifts, and no appreciable evolution. We also perform the bias
calculation where similar segregation is found, but now it is among the
quiescent galaxies where a growing evolution with redshift is clearer. These
findings clearly corroborate the well known colour-density relation, confirming
that quiescent galaxies are mainly located in dark matter halos that are more

The ALHAMBRA survey : Estimation of the clustering signal encoded in the cosmic variance
The relative cosmic variance () is a fundamental source of
uncertainty in pencil-beam surveys and, as a particular case of count-in-cell
statistics, can be used to estimate the bias between galaxies and their
underlying dark-matter distribution. Our goal is to test the significance of
the clustering information encoded in the measured in the ALHAMBRA
survey. We measure the cosmic variance of several galaxy populations selected
with band luminosity at as the intrinsic dispersion in
the number density distribution derived from the 48 ALHAMBRA subfields. We
compare the observational with the cosmic variance of the dark
matter expected from the theory, . This provides an
estimation of the galaxy bias . The galaxy bias from the cosmic variance is
in excellent agreement with the bias estimated by two-point correlation
function analysis in ALHAMBRA. This holds for different redshift bins, for red
and blue subsamples, and for several band luminosity selections. We find
that increases with the band luminosity and the redshift, as expected
from previous work. Moreover, red galaxies have a larger bias than blue
galaxies, with a relative bias of . Our results
demonstrate that the cosmic variance measured in ALHAMBRA is due to the
clustering of galaxies and can be used to characterise the affecting
pencil-beam surveys. In addition, it can also be used to estimate the galaxy
