A VLSI-oriented and power-efficient approach for dynamic texture recognition applied to smoke detection

The recognition of dynamic textures is fundamental in processing image sequences as they are very common in natural scenes. The computation of the optic flow is the most popular method to detect, segment and analyse dynamic textures. For weak dynamic textures, this method is specially adequate. However, for strong dynamic textures, it implies heavy computational load and therefore an important energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a novel approach intented to be implemented by very low-power integrated vision devices. It is based on a simple and flexible computation at the focal plane implemented by power-efficient hardware. The first stages of the processing are dedicated to remove redundant spatial information in order to obtain a simplified representation of the original scene. This simplified representation can be used by subsequent digital processing stages to finally decide about the presence and evolution of a certain dynamic texture in the scene. As an application of the proposed approach, we present the preliminary results of smoke detection for the development of a forest fire detection system based on a wireless vision sensor network.Junta de Andalucía (CICE) 2006-TIC-235

Relación entre cómic y enunciado matemático. Estudio y caso práctico

    Get PDF

Single-Board-Computer Clusters for Cloudlet Computing in Internet of Things

    Get PDF
The number of connected sensors and devices is expected to increase to billions in the near future. However, centralised cloud-computing data centres present various challenges to meet the requirements inherent to Internet of Things (IoT) workloads, such as low latency, high throughput and bandwidth constraints. Edge computing is becoming the standard computing paradigm for latency-sensitive real-time IoT workloads, since it addresses the aforementioned limitations related to centralised cloud-computing models. Such a paradigm relies on bringing computation close to the source of data, which presents serious operational challenges for large-scale cloud-computing providers. In this work, we present an architecture composed of low-cost Single-Board-Computer clusters near to data sources, and centralised cloud-computing data centres. The proposed cost-efficient model may be employed as an alternative to fog computing to meet real-time IoT workload requirements while keeping scalability. We include an extensive empirical analysis to assess the suitability of single-board-computer clusters as cost-effective edge-computing micro data centres. Additionally, we compare the proposed architecture with traditional cloudlet and cloud architectures, and evaluate them through extensive simulation. We finally show that acquisition costs can be drastically reduced while keeping performance levels in data-intensive IoT use cases.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2017-82113-C2-1-RMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad RTI2018-098062-A-I00European Union’s Horizon 2020 No. 754489Science Foundation Ireland grant 13/RC/209

Structure and dynamics in liquid iron at high pressure and temperature. A first principles study

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaWe have studied the evolution of structural and dynamic properties of liquid Fe as a function of pressure for 11 thermodynamic states close to the melting line. The pressure range considered goes from ambient pressure to 323 GPa, and the study has been carried out by using the ab-initio molecular dynamics technique. The agreement between the calculated static structure and the available experimental data is very good, including details like an asymmetric second peak, which remains over most of the whole pressure range and suggests a significant local icosahedral short-range order in the liquid. The dynamical structure is studied through the characteristics of the propagating density fluctuations and the associated longitudinal and transverse particle currents. The transverse dispersion relations expose two branches of modes for all pressures, whose range of appearance is analyzed and put in connection with the double-peak structure of the Fourier spectra of velocity autocorrelation functions. We have also investigated the existence of fingerprints of transverse acoustic excitation modes in the dynamic structure factor for the high pressure states similar to those observed in the inelastic X-ray scattering intensity data of liquid Fe at ambient pressure. The calculated electronic density of states shows that with increasing pressure there is a widening of the conduction band along with a decreasing significance of spin polarization. Finally, we also report results for transport coefficients like self-diffusion, shear viscosity and adiabatic sound velocity, which are compared with the available experimental data.

    Get PDF
[EN] Using the four high-order values proposed by the Theory of values of Schwartz to operationalize the construct of work values, we evaluated the influence of these values on the development of organizational commitment, in comparison with four facets of work satisfaction and four organizational factors: empowerment, knowledge of organizational goals, and training and communication practices. A sample of 982 employees from eight companies of Northeastern Mexico was used in this study.

Evaluating the institutionalisation of diversity outreach in top universities worldwide

    Get PDF
The participation of diverse demographics in higher education has risen over the last halfcentury; meanwhile, different political and social tiers have been assigning a more active role to institutions in terms of equality and social justice. This change in circumstances has led to the roll out of processes to institutionalise diversity outreach. This study was conducted for the clear purpose of assessing the current institutionalisation status of diversity outreach in 127 key universities from the Academic Ranking of World Universities based on the opinions of diversity outreach managers and the information published on institutional websites, in turn measuring compliance with various indicators. A qualitative analysis of the institutional statements, the goals sought through strategic plans and the definitions of diversity itself was also conducted. The evidence reveals the early stage of the institutionalisation process in universities on account of the low percentage obtained for the proposed indicators. Furthermore, the study failed to exhibit significant differences in this process in terms of the institutional ownership or position held in the ranking; however, more prominent progress was noted in the North-American region when geographical differences were taken into account, likely as a result of the historical background in the advocacy for equal opportunities. Lastly, a change of approach to the conceptualisation of diversity is suggested in favour of equality and social justice. This study was supported by the Spain’s Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, State Plan for R&D (Grant number EDU2017-82862-R)
