    Protection mechanisms for blast furnace crucible using titanium oxides

    In modern steelmaking the duration of a working campaign for a blast furnace is related to the life of the crucible. Adding titanium oxide has been a frequent practice in the operation routines for modern blast furnaces, seeking the protection of the crucible walls, independently from its physical or chemical characteristics. These practices, as conventional operation of iron and steelmaking installations, present both advantages as well as undesirable consequences. The work proposes the incorporation of rutile (TiO2) or illmenite (FeO ·TiO2) in the refractory matrix of the linings, as a practice that results in a protection of the crucible without altering, under any circumstance, the regular operation of the installation

    Temporary Immunity of Blackbelly Lambs Reinfected with Trichostrongylus colubriformis

    Background: Trichostrongylus colubriformis is one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep in warm climates. In this nematode species, anthelmintic resistance (AR) has been reported, which has motivated the search for alternative methods to control it. One practice is to increase the immune response level through the selection of animals with natural resistance, such as Blackbelly sheep. The aim of this study was to investigate the response of IgA and IgG in serum and saliva and the level of cells involved in the acquired resistance in Blackbelly lambs after single artificial reinfection with a resistant strain of Trichostrongylus colubriformis.Materials, Methods & Results: Sixteen weaned lambs grazed for one month in nematode-contaminated grasslands. All the lambs were treated with Albendazole and Levamisole; later, they were stabled for two months. After that, eight lambs were re-infected with 6000 larvae of T. colubriformis and other eight lambs remained naturally infected. In addition, eight nematode-free lambs raised in cages, served as negative control. Blood samples were taken fortnightly to determine packed cell volume (PCV, %), plasmatic protein (g dL-1), as well as absolute and differential leukocytes. The eggs per gram of feces (EPG) were recorded. An indirect ELISA against T. colubriformis Ag was performed to determine the IgG and IgA levels. All data were analyzed by repeated measures. The EPG in the re-infected group increased after 34 days (625 ± 287), while in the naturally infected group it remained close to 200 ± 158 throughout the study. The control lambs did not show any infection. The PCV (29.4 ± 3.4 %), basophils (44 ± 74), lymphocytes (8443 ± 2845) and monocytes (77 ± 91) counts were not affected by infection. The IgA OD against T. colubriformis increased significantly after 15 days post-infection (dpi) in the re-infected lambs (1.69 ± 0.5, 80% with regards to standard). With IgG was not possible to distinguish the effect of infection.Discussion: Highly persistent infection of T. colubriformis was observed for at least four months in the naturally infected group despite having been treated with anthelmintics. It is a significant problem because this species has a high prevalence in the region of study and shows anthelmintic resistance. For such reason, is important to evaluate the ability of the animal to develop an immune response. In other study, a natural reduction in the fecal egg count (FEC) was indicated at 100 dpi in the same species, but in the present work, the FEC could not be reduced until around 120 days when the naturally infected lambs were evaluated. The larger number of neutrophils and leukocytes in both the naturally infected and re-infected groups implies a sustained response for a long time. While the higher counts of eosinophils only in the re-infected group were produced as an immediate response to infection with T. colubriformis. Similarly, with a single infection of T. colubriformis, in Santa Ines sheep the infected lambs showed significantly higher levels of serum IgA than the control group. In this case, differences in IgA activity were observed between the re-infected lambs and the other groups at fifteen dpi, but the basal levels of IgA in the naturally pre-infected lambs were maintained at least five weeks after infection. In conclusion, an increase in the peripheral immune response in lambs re-infected with T. colubriformis resulted from the increase in IgA levels in serum and saliva, and increase in the number of peripheral eosinophils, total leukocytes and neutrophils. Re-infected lambs had a higher level of IgA than naturally infected lambs and control lambs, making possible to promote the immune response with a single re-infection with Trichostrongylus colubriformis

    Microplastics in sediments of artificially recharged lagoons: case study in a Biosphere Reserve

    We studied the occurrence of microplastics in sediments of artificially and non-artificially recharged lagoons from the network of endorheic wetlands called “La Mancha Húmeda”, declared Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The particles sampled in this study covered the 25 μm–5 mm range. Films were the dominant microplastic typology in non-artificially recharged lagoons, while fibres and fragments were more abundant in those receiving wastewater. The concentration of microplastics in sediments reached up to 24.4 ± 5.2 microplastics/g, while plastic litter counts yielded <1 particle/g in non-wastewater receiving lagoons. Eleven types of plastic were identified using Micro-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (micro-FTIR), the most abundant being the polyolefins polyethylene and polypropylene, and polyester and acrylic fibres. The statistical analysis of FTIR spectra confirmed the similarity between samples taken from recharged lagoons and wastewater treatment plant effluents. Overall, our results showed that endorheic lagoons are very sensitive to the accumulation of persistent pollutants, which include microplastics. The recharge of lagoons with wastewater effluents to maintain water levels, even if correctly treated according to current standards, is not a sustainable practice. Due to the closed character of endorheic basins, the continuous input of wastewater led to the accumulation of microplastics in sediments of wastewater receiving lagoons up to 40 times over non-recharged lagoon

    Comparison of two phenotypical methods to segregate resistant and susceptible lambs to parasitic nematodes

    The objective of this study was to compare two segregation methods to select resistant and susceptible female Pelibuey lambs infected naturally with gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) in relation to their haematological and immunological response. For 6 months, faeces and blood samples were taken fortnightly from 40 grazing 5-month-old female lambs. The lambs were classified according to two methods using faecal egg count (FEC) as a phenotypical trait. In the first (reference) method (M3SE, n = 22), resistant (RES) lambs had FEC lower than the mean – 3 standard errors, the susceptible (SUS) lambs levels higher than + 3 standard errors(n = 10) and the intermediate (INT) lambs (n = 8) were categorised by having FECs between the two values. The second method (QUM) divided the population, using quartiles, into resistant (RES; 25%), intermediate (INT; 50%), and susceptible (SUS; 25%) lambs. The agreement between both methods was estimated using the Kappa index. The packed cell volume (PCV), total plasma protein (TPP) and peripheral eosinophils (EOS) were determined for each group. Serum was used to evaluate the IgA levels. PCV and TPP values were higher (P&lt;0.01) in the RES lambs (31.5 ± 3.4 and 6.16 ± 0.5 g/dL by QUM, respectively, and 31.5 ± 3.9 and 6.24 ± 0.49 g/dL by M3SE, respectively) than the SUS lambs (28.1 ± 4.7 and 5.94 ± 0.5 g/d, respectively, by both methods). The EOS and IgA values increased with age. M3SE and QUM were in moderate agreement (Kappa = 0.43). We concluded that the two segregation methods allowed for the identification of the same female SUS lambs, but a greater number of animals were categorised phenotypically as resistant using the M3SE method.     Percepción e imagen de los call centers en la opinión pública argentina

    El objetivo de esta investigación es dar cuenta de la imagen y la percepción que tienen ciertos públicos acerca de los call centers. Pudo obtenerse un diagnóstico sobre la imagen de los call centers (en: usuarios, consumidores, periodistas especializados, dueños o responsables de empresas que brindan el servicio, y gerentes de aquellas que los contratan), que puede contribuir, posteriormente, a la elaboración de estrategias de comunicación que permitan mejorar la percepción sobre esta herramienta y las empresas que las comercializan, teniendo en cuenta la identificación de estereotipos, valores, necesidades, reclamos, defectos y virtudes planteados por los públicos mencionados. Respecto de la imagen que la sociedad se hace de los empleados de los call centers, en la muestra se pudo determinar que las palabras que más se relacionen con estos puestos son: "primer trabajo", "estudiante" (22,5%), "respuestas rápidas" y "mucha espera"

    Blood culture-negative infective endocarditis: a worse outcome? Results from a large multicentre retrospective Spanish cohort study

    [Background] To assess the impact of blood cultures negative infective endocarditis (BCNIE) on in-hospital mortality.[Methods] Prospective multicentre study with retrospective analysis of a Spanish cohort including adult patients with definite IE. Cardiac implantable devices infection were excluded. Comparisons between blood cultures positive and BCNIE groups were performed to analyse in-hospital mortality.[Results] 1001 cases were included of which 83 (8.3%) had BCNIE. Alternative microbiological diagnosis was achieved for 39 (47%) out 83 cases. The most frequent identifications were: Coxiella burnetii (11; 28.2%), Tropheryma whipplei (4; 10.3%), Streptococcus gallolyticus (4;10.3%) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (3; 7.7%). Surgery was performed more frequently in BCNIE group (57.8 vs. 36.9%, p < .001). All-cause in-hospital mortality rate was 26.7% without statistical difference between compared groups. BCNIE was not associated to worse mortality rate in Cox regression model (aHR = 1.37, 95% CI 0.90–2.07, p = .14). Absence of microbiological diagnosis was also not associated to worse in-hospital prognosis (aHR = 1.62, 95% CI 0.99–2.64, p = .06).[Conclusions] In our cohort, BCNIE was not associated to greater in-hospital mortality based in multivariate Cox regression models. The variables most frequently associated with mortality were indicated but not performed surgery (aHR = 2.48, 95% CI 1.73–3.56, p < .001), septic shock (aHR = 2.24, 95% CI 1.68–2.99, p < .001), age over 65 years (aHR = 1.88, 95% CI 1.40-2.52, p < .001) and complicated endocarditis (aHR = 1.79, 95% CI 1.36–2.37, p < .001).Peer reviewe

    On 19th and 20th October of 2012 an event of intense rainfall triggered flooding processes in the whole watershed of the Pyrenean tributaries of the Ebro basin. A brief description of rainfall data, hydrological responses and risk situations is presented. A reflection of the consequences of these floods is presented along with a necessity to change the emergency measures for risk management based on the adequate&nbsp;flood-prone areas management as requires the Floods Directive,2007/60/CE on the assessment and management of flood risks.Intensas precipitaciones en los d&iacute;as 19 y 20 de octubre de2012 generaron crecidas en toda la red fluvial de los afluentes pirenaicos de la cuenca del Ebro. La educación como futuro. Este curso se impartió de forma paralela al Festival de Cine Iberoamericano de Huelva, España, y ambos eventos forman parte de esta iniciativa educativa. Todas y todos los docentes que impartieron cátedra en este curso egresaron hace 20 años de la Maestría de Comunicación Audiovisual, que se impartía en el Campus de la Rábida de esta misma Universidad. Por lo tanto, este encuentro satisfizo dos objetivos: primero, reflexionar sobre los escenarios y desafíos del espacio audiovisual en Iberoamérica; y segundo, reencontrarnos como una comunidad pluricultural y diversa, donde nuestras diferencias y similitudes conlleva a un ejercicio de hermanamiento. Está claro que la diversidad cultural enriquece a quien la experimenta. Esta es una oportunidad de mirarnos en el espejo y reencontrarnos

    A primary healthcare information intervention for communicating cardiovascular risk to patients with poorly controlled hypertension: The Education and Coronary Risk Evaluation (Educore) study-A pragmatic, cluster-randomized trial

    PURPOSE: Uncertainty exists regarding the best way to communicate cardiovascular risk (CVR) to patients, and it is unclear whether the comprehension and perception of CVR varies according to the format used. The aim of the present work was to determine whether a strategy designed for communicating CVR information to patients with poorly controlled high blood pressure (HBP), but with no background of cardiovascular disease, was more effective than usual care in the control of blood pressure (BP) over the course of a year. METHODS: A pragmatic, two-arm, cluster-randomized controlled trial was performed. Consecutive patients aged 40-65 years, all diagnosed with HBP in the last 12 months, and all of whom showed poor control of their condition (systolic BP ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic BP ≥90 mmHg), were recruited at 22 primary healthcare centres. Eleven centres were randomly assigned to the usual care arm, and 11 to the informative intervention arm (Educore arm). At the start of the study, the Educore arm subjects were shown the "low risk SCORE table", along with impacting images and information pamphlets encouraging the maintenance of good cardiovascular health. The main outcome variable measured was the control of HBP; the secondary outcome variables were SCORE table score, total plasma cholesterol concentration, use of tobacco, adherence to prescribed treatment, and quality of life. RESULTS: The study participants were 411 patients (185 in the Educore arm and 226 in the usual care arm). Multilevel logistic regression showed that, at 12 months, the Educore intervention achieved better control of HBP (OR = 1.57; 1.02 to 2.41). No statistically significant differences were seen between the two arms at 12 months with respect to the secondary outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to usual care, the Educore intervention was associated with better control of HBP after adjusting for age, baseline SBP and plasma cholesterol, at 12 months.This study was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation via the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Subprograma de Proyectos de Investigación en Evaluación de Tecnologías Sanitarias y Servicios de Salud (PI 09/90354), and the Fundación de Investigación e Innovación Biomédica en Atención Primaria (FIIBAP).
