Characteristics and outcomes of bacteremic pneumococcal pneumonia of patients with and without HIV infection in Argentina

Streptococcus pneumoniae is the main causative agent of pneumonia, with a 10 to 25 percent rate of isolation in blood cultures. Controversies exist regarding the prognostic impact of a history of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection on community-acquired pneumonia. The aim of our work was to analyze and compare the clinical presentation, radiological findings and progression of pneumococcal pneumonia in patients infected with and not infected with HIV. We retrospectively analyzed adult patients with positive blood cultures for Streptococcus pneumoniae and clinical and radiological findings compatible with pneumonia in the period between January 2012 and May 2017. Age, sex, comorbidities, clinical and laboratory variables, radiological severity, progression and mortality were analyzed. Comparative analysis between HIV-positive and -negative patients was carried out. Receiver operating curves (ROC) for CURB-65 were performed to predict mortality in both groups. We included 107 patients (21 HIV-positive and 86 HIV-negative). HIV patients were on average younger (38 vs 58 years) with lower hematocrits (31.7 vs 36.5%) and fewer comorbidities (47 vs 72%). Overall mortality was 36 percent, and the area under the curve (AUC) of the CURB-65 ROC was 0.69 (95% confidence interval: 0.58–0.79) for all patients without differences between the two groups. Patients with a history of HIV infection had the same progression and mortality as the group of patients without that background

Los centros históricos latinoamericanos: estrategias de intervención, renovación y gestión. Periodo: 1980-2010

En el pasado, los centros históricos constituyeron toda la dimensión de las ciudades. Eran los lugares donde se desarrollaban las actividades políticas, económicas, sociales, religiosas y culturales de la sociedad, y en donde residía la mayor cantidad de la población. Contienen gran parte de la historia, además de ser testigos de los cambios y de las diversas crisis que se fueron produciendo. Dichas crisis han dejado huellas que se han visto reflejadas en su progresivo abandono. El deterioro de estas áreas, ha planteado la necesidad de iniciar procesos de intervención que han incorporado nuevas formas de gestión, con el propósito de adaptarlas a las nuevas demandas económicas, culturales y sociales. El artículo abordará el concepto de centro histórico, los mecanismos y resultados identificados en intervenciones latinoamericanas, y los casos de Quito y La Habana. Finalmente, se esbozarán recomendaciones enfocadas en la gestión de estos sectores clave de las ciudades.In the past, historical urban cores constituted the whole dimension of the cities. They were the place where political, economic, social, religious and cultural activities took place; they were also the place of residence for the major amount of the population. They contain great part of the history besides being witnesses of the changes and of the diverse crisis who were taking place. The crisis just mentioned have left his treads, which eventually were reflected in his progressive abandon. The deterioration of these areas has raised the need to initiate process´ of intervention that have been incorporating new forms of management, with the intention to adapt them to the new economic, cultural and social demands. The article will approach the concept of historic urban core, the mechanisms and outcomes identified in Latin American interventions, and the cases of Quito and La Habana. Finally, outlining recommendations focused on the management of these key areas of the cities.Peer Reviewe

Una estrategia de enseñanza y aprendizaje para difundir y fortalecer el valor histórico de las "Danzas locos de San Isidro Labrador" : un caso en la educación venezolana

El objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar el efecto de la aplicación de estrategias de enseñanza y aprendizaje, para difundir y fortalecer el valor histórico y cultural de las Danzas Locos de San Isidro Labrador Lagunillas-Mérida. La investigación es de tipo cualitativa, de paradigma humanista y diseño etnográfico. Total Physical Response Strategies To improve vocabulary with 6th-grade students at the Enma Graciela Romero School of Tabacundo in the academic year 2022 – 2023

Implement Total Physical Response strategies to improve English vocabulary in 6th-grade students at “Enma Graciela Romero” school in the 2022-2023 academic period.In the modern world, English has become the most important international language for communication between people of different cultures. Therefore, English proficiency has become an essential skill for students. This is especially true for sixth-grade students at the Enma Graciela Romero school in Tabacundo, Ecuador, where English is taught as a compulsory subject. In the present investigation, the objective is the implementation of an educational strategy called Total Physical Response to improve English vocabulary in 6th-grade students of the "Enma Graciela Romero" school located in the city of Tabacundo, province of Pichincha in the academic period 2022-2023. Next, a sequence of theoretical foundations was ruled to support the implementation of the aforementioned strategy with respect to the improvement of vocabulary in English which includes two main skills such as listening and speaking. Subsequently, this study was carried out based on a mixed methodology that used different research methods, such as interviews and surveys to later collect, analyze and interpret the data obtained. Therefore, quantitative, and qualitative methods are involved in this research because they offer a unique and broad perspective on the perspective of both the teacher and the student as main educational actors. The results obtained showed that the use of physical movements and the use of interactive material to improve the English language are frequently present in the English classes of sixth-grade students. Therefore, it is analyzed that incorporating fun and interesting strategies where students worry about performing physical movements helps to improve the vocabulary of the contents in the second language. As a result, a didactic guide is provided where the use of active teaching methods through games is proposed to motivate and improve vocabulary through the association of words with movements to stimulate the retention of information in sixth-grade students.Licenciatur
