    Aprendizaje de la lengua portuguesa y acceso al capital: un estudio sobre estudiantes universitarios de Macao

    This paper reports on an inquiry into a group of students’ Portuguese language learning with a focus on their access to economic, social, and cultural capital. The inquiry problematizes the traditional uncritical assumption of a shared pursuit of linguistic competence among students. Drawing on individual in-depth interviews with 14 participants at a university in Macau, this article illustrates how local and mainland Chinese students related their Portuguese language learning to the acquisition of different forms of capital, respectively. Specifically, our analysis reveals that economic capital dominated in the local participants’ pursuits, with cultural and social capital being less influential, whereas among mainland Chinese participants the influence of economic capital was weak and unsustainable, with a balanced distribution of cultural and social capital. The findings also suggest that the participants’ family contexts and social networks shaped their pursuits of different forms of capital in Portuguese learning, implying that educational institutions and teachers need to reframe their learning resources and pedagogical strategies for Portuguese language learners in Macau, placing greater emphasis on reinforcing students’ social connections with Portuguese or local Macanese communities.Este estudio investiga el aprendizaje de la lengua portuguesa de un grupo de estudiantes con un enfoque en su acceso al capital económico, social y cultural. La investigación cuestiona la tradicional suposición acrítica de la búsqueda compartida de la competencia lingüística entre los estudiantes. Basándose en entrevistas individuales a profundidad con 14 participantes en una universidad de Macao, este estudio ilustra cómo los estudiantes locales y los de China continental relacionaron su aprendizaje del idioma portugués con la adquisición de diferentes formas de capital. En concreto, nuestro análisis revela que los participantes buscaron principalmente el capital económico, siendo el capital cultural y social menos influyente, mientras que, entre los participantes de China continental, la influencia del capital económico fue débil e insostenible, con una distribución equilibrada de capital cultural y social. Los resultados también sugieren que los contextos familiares y las redes sociales de los participantes determinaron su búsqueda de diferentes formas de capital en el aprendizaje del portugués, lo que implica que las instituciones educativas y los docentes deben reestructurar sus recursos de aprendizaje y estrategias pedagógicas para los estudiantes de lengua portuguesa en Macao, poniendo mayor énfasis en el refuerzo de las conexiones sociales de los estudiantes con las comunidades portuguesas o macaenses locales

    Real-world Treatment Patterns and Adverse Events in Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma from a Large US Claims Database

    Background: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), tyrosine kinase (TK) and mechanistic target of rapamycin kinase (mTOR) inhibitors are common first-line (1 L) treatments for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). Despite treatment availability, the 5-year survival rate in patients diagnosed at the metastatic stage is only ≈ 10%. To gain contemporary insights into RCC treatment trends that may inform clinical, scientific and payer considerations, treatment patterns and adverse events (AEs) associated with 1 L therapy were examined in a retrospective, longitudinal, population-based, observational study of patients with mRCC. Methods: US administrative claims data (Truven Health MarketScan Commercial Databases) were used to assess trends in 1 L treatment initiation in mRCC (2006–2015) and characterize patterns of individual 1 L treatments, baseline characteristics, comorbidities and treatment-related AEs from 2011 through 2015. Outcomes were evaluated by drug class and route of administration. Results: Ten-year trend analysis (n = 4270) showed that TK/VEGF-directed therapy rapidly became more common than mTOR-directed therapy, and oral treatments were favored over intravenous (IV) treatments. Overall, 1992 eligible patients initiated 1 L treatment for mRCC from 2011 through 2015: 1752 (88%) received TK/VEGF-directed agents and 233 (12%) received mTOR-directed agents; 1674 (84%) received oral treatments, and 318 (16%) received IV treatments. The most common 1 L treatment was sunitinib (n = 849), followed by pazopanib (n = 631), temsirolimus (n = 157) and bevacizumab (n = 154). Patient characteristics and comorbidities, including age, diabetes and congestive heart failure, were independent predictors of 1 L mRCC treatment choice. The three most common potentially 1 L treatment–related AEs were nausea/vomiting (128.2 per 100 patient-years [PY]), hypertension (69 per 100 PY) and renal insufficiency (44.6 per 100 PY). A wide variety of agents were used as second-line (2 L) therapy. Substantial latency of onset was observed for several potentially treatment-related toxicities in patients treated with TK/VEGF- or mTOR-directed agents. Conclusions: In the US, 1 L TK/VEGF inhibitor uptake in recent years appears largely in line with national approvals and guidelines, with varied 2 L agent use. Although retrospective evaluation of claims data cannot assess underlying causality, insights from these real-world RCC treatment and AE patterns will be useful in informing medical and payer decisions

    Demonstration of a sub‐picosecond x‐ray streak camera

    A novel design, magnetically focused, x‐ray streak camera was designed and tested using sub‐20 fs soft‐x‐ray pulses generated by high harmonic emission in a gas. The temporal resolution of the camera was demonstrated to be under 0.9 ps throughout the ultraviolet to soft‐x‐ray wavelength region.     Teacher cognition in teaching intercultural communicative competence: A qualitative study on preservice Chinese language teachers in Hong Kong SAR, China

    The purpose of this study is to examine preservice Chinese language teachers’ cognition in teaching intercultural communicative competence. In the study we collected data through in-depth interviews with seven preservice teachers in a Master of Education program (Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, TCSL) at a university in Hong Kong SAR, China. The findings indicated that the participants had a relatively positive attitude and inclination toward the development of students’ intercultural communicative competence, while their conceptualizations of culture tended to be static and ambiguous. In addition, the participants’ objectives in teaching intercultural communicative competence were found to be more attitude-than knowledge- or skill-oriented. The study offers valuable insights that preservice language teachers’ cognition plays a crucial role in their future professional development and calls for curricular innovations with intercultural aims in teacher education programs

    Sirt1 Regulates Insulin Secretion by Repressing UCP2 in Pancreatic β Cells

    Sir2 and insulin/IGF-1 are the major pathways that impinge upon aging in lower organisms. In Caenorhabditis elegans a possible genetic link between Sir2 and the insulin/IGF-1 pathway has been reported. Here we investigate such a link in mammals. We show that Sirt1 positively regulates insulin secretion in pancreatic β cells. Sirt1 represses the uncoupling protein (UCP) gene UCP2 by binding directly to the UCP2 promoter. In β cell lines in which Sirt1 is reduced by SiRNA, UCP2 levels are elevated and insulin secretion is blunted. The up-regulation of UCP2 is associated with a failure of cells to increase ATP levels after glucose stimulation. Knockdown of UCP2 restores the ability to secrete insulin in cells with reduced Sirt1, showing that UCP2 causes the defect in glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. Food deprivation induces UCP2 in mouse pancreas, which may occur via a reduction in NAD (a derivative of niacin) levels in the pancreas and down-regulation of Sirt1. Sirt1 knockout mice display constitutively high UCP2 expression. Our findings show that Sirt1 regulates UCP2 in β cells to affect insulin secretion

    Roadmap on spatiotemporal light fields

    Spatiotemporal sculpturing of light pulse with ultimately sophisticated structures represents the holy grail of the human everlasting pursue of ultrafast information transmission and processing as well as ultra-intense energy concentration and extraction. It also holds the key to unlock new extraordinary fundamental physical effects. Traditionally, spatiotemporal light pulses are always treated as spatiotemporally separable wave packet as solution of the Maxwell's equations. In the past decade, however, more generalized forms of spatiotemporally nonseparable solution started to emerge with growing importance for their striking physical effects.     FINCH: A Blueprint for Accessible and Scientifically Valuable Remote Sensing Satellite Missions

    Satellite remote sensing missions have grown in popularity over the past fifteen years due to their ability to cover large swaths of land at regular time intervals, making them suitable for monitoring environmental trends such as greenhouse gas emissions and agricultural practices. As environmental monitoring becomes central in global efforts to combat climate change, accessible platforms for contributing to this research are critical. Many remote sensing missions demand high performance of payloads, restricting research and development to organizations with sufficient resources to address these challenges. Atmospheric remote sensing missions, for example, require extremely high spatial and spectral resolutions to generate scientifically useful results. As an undergraduate-led design team, the University of Toronto Aerospace Team’s Space Systems Division has performed an extensive mission selection process to find a feasible and impactful mission focusing on crop residue mapping. This mission profile provides the data needed to improve crop residue retention practices and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from soil, while relaxing performance requirements relative to many active atmospheric sensing missions. This is accompanied by the design of FINCH, a 3U CubeSat with a hyperspectral camera composed of custom and commercial off-the-shelf components. The team’s custom composite payload, the FINCH Eye, strives to advance performance achieved at this form factor by leveraging novel technologies while keeping design feasibility for a student team a priority. Optical and mechanical design decisions and performance are detailed, as well as assembly, integration, and testing considerations. Beyond its design, the FINCH Eye is examined from operational, timeline, and financial perspectives, and a discussion of the supporting firmware, data processing, and attitude control systems is included. Insight is provided into open-source tools that the team has developed to aid in the design process, including a linear error analysis tool for assessing scientific performance, an optical system tradeoff analysis tool, and data processing algorithms. Ultimately, the team presents a comprehensive case study of an accessible and impactful satellite optical payload design process, in hopes of serving as a blueprint for future design teams seeking to contribute to remote sensing research

    Guidelines for Modeling and Reporting Health Effects of Climate Change Mitigation Actions.

    BACKGROUND: Modeling suggests that climate change mitigation actions can have substantial human health benefits that accrue quickly and locally. Documenting the benefits can help drive more ambitious and health-protective climate change mitigation actions; however, documenting the adverse health effects can help to avoid them. Estimating the health effects of mitigation (HEM) actions can help policy makers prioritize investments based not only on mitigation potential but also on expected health benefits. To date, however, the wide range of incompatible approaches taken to developing and reporting HEM estimates has limited their comparability and usefulness to policymakers. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this effort was to generate guidance for modeling studies on scoping, estimating, and reporting population health effects from climate change mitigation actions. METHODS: An expert panel of HEM researchers was recruited to participate in developing guidance for conducting HEM studies. The primary literature and a synthesis of HEM studies were provided to the panel. Panel members then participated in a modified Delphi exercise to identify areas of consensus regarding HEM estimation. Finally, the panel met to review and discuss consensus findings, resolve remaining differences, and generate guidance regarding conducting HEM studies. RESULTS: The panel generated a checklist of recommendations regarding stakeholder engagement: HEM modeling, including model structure, scope and scale, demographics, time horizons, counterfactuals, health response functions, and metrics; parameterization and reporting; approaches to uncertainty and sensitivity analysis; accounting for policy uptake; and discounting. DISCUSSION: This checklist provides guidance for conducting and reporting HEM estimates to make them more comparable and useful for policymakers. Harmonization of HEM estimates has the potential to lead to advances in and improved synthesis of policy-relevant research that can inform evidence-based decision making and practice. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP6745
