SheepIT, an E-Shepherd System for Weed Control in Vineyards: Experimental Results and Lessons Learned
Weed control in vineyards demands regular interventions that currently consist of the use of machinery, such as plows and brush-cutters, and the application of herbicides. These methods have several drawbacks, including cost, chemical pollution, and the emission of greenhouse gases. The use of animals to weed vineyards, usually ovines, is an ancestral, environmentally friendly, and sustainable practice that was abandoned because of the scarcity and cost of shepherds, which were essential for preventing animals from damaging the vines and grapes. The SheepIT project was developed to automate the role of human shepherds, by monitoring and conditioning the behaviour of grazing animals. Additionally, the data collected in real-time can be used for improving the efficiency of the whole process, e.g., by detecting abnormal situations such as health conditions or attacks and manage the weeding areas. This paper presents a comprehensive set of field-test results, obtained with the SheepIT infrastructure, addressing several dimensions, from the animals’ well-being and their impact on the cultures, to technical aspects, such as system autonomy. The results show that the core objectives of the project have been attained and that it is feasible to use this system, at an industrial scale, in vineyards.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A obra é
e do Botanical Garden and Museum, de Oslo (O).
Carvedilol: Relation Between Antioxidant Activity and Inhibition of the Mitochondrial Permeability Transition
Objectivos: A transição de permeabilidade
mitocondrial (TPM) é um evento associado a
estresse oxidativo severo (por exemplo,
durante isquémia e reperfusão do miocárdio)
e acumulação excessiva de cálcio
mitocondrial, podendo mesmo levar a morte
celular.
estresse oxidativo.
Materiais e métodos: As mitocôndrias foram
isoladas a partir do coração de rato e
avaliaram-se parâmetros relacionados com a
indução da TPM (n=5 para cada indutor):
entumescimento mitocondrial e oxidação dos
grupos tiólicos proteicos (ambos por
espectrofotometria).
Resultados: Com Ca/Pi, o CV protegeu a
mitocôndria da indução da TPM,
nomeadamente na sua forma deletéria de alta
condutância. Este efeito evidenciou-se pela
diminuição do entumescimento mitocondrial.
(p<0.001). O CV não mostrou
efeitos protectores com Ca/Catr.
Conclusões: O CV protegeu a mitocôndria
cardíaca da TPM, mas apenas quando a
oxidação dos grupos tiólicos proteicos foi
causa e não consequência da TPM. Estes
resultados mostram claramente que, durante
agressões ao miocárdio (durante a
isquémia/reperfusão, por exemplo), o efeito
protector do CV é primariamente devido a
um efeito antioxidante, inibindo a produção
e os efeitos das espécies reactivas de
oxigénio.Objectives: The mitochondrial permeability
transition (MPT) is an event related to severe
oxidative stress (for example, during
myocardial ischemia and reperfusion) and
excessive mitochondrial calcium
accumulation, also being implicated in cell
death. In this study, we compared the effect
of carvedilol on the cardiac MPT induced by
calcium and phosphate (Ca/Pi) and
calcium/carboxyatractyloside (Ca/Catr).
Oxidative stress plays a major role in MPT
induction by Ca/Pi, leading to the oxidation
of protein thiol groups, in contrast with
Ca/Catr, where such oxidation is secondary
to MPT induction and is not caused by
oxidative stress.
Materials and methods: Mitochondria were
isolated from rat hearts and parameters
related to MPT induction were evaluated
(n=5 for each inducer): mitochondrial
swelling and oxidation of protein thiol groups
(both measured by spectrophotometry).
Results: Using Ca/Pi, carvedilol protected
mitochondria from MPT induction,
particularly in its high conductance form. Its
effect was demonstrated by analyzing the
decrease in mitochondrial swelling
amplitude. Simultaneously, we observed inhibition of protein thiol group oxidation
(p<0.001). By contrast, carvedilol did not
show any protective effect with Ca/Catr.
Conclusions: Carvedilol was only effective
against the MPT when the oxidation of
protein thiol groups was the cause and not
the consequence of the MPT phenomenon.
The results clearly show that during
myocardial aggressions (ischemia and
reperfusion, for example), the protective
effect of carvedilol is primarily due to an
antioxidant mechanism, inhibiting the
production and effects of reactive oxygen
species

Atividade física e alimentação em estudantes do ensino superior
The aim was to characterize the lifestyles of students at a higher education institution, in the dimensions of physical activity and nutrition, and to propose intervention strategies based on the results obtained. Exploratory, descriptive, transversal, and quantitative study. Data were collected through the Fantastic Lifestyle questionnaire (EVF) distributed to students of a Higher Education Institution in the interior of Portugal, via email, registered and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 22.0. The results obtained in the Physical Activity and Nutrition dimensions of the EVF stand out. A total of 455 students participated in the study, 42.0% reported that they walked, almost always, for at least 30 minutes a day, 14.1% did not practice any physical activity; 56.7% said they sometimes consume vegetables and fruit while 21.1% do it daily. On the other hand, the majority (80.9%) regularly consume some high-calorie foods, 19.4% are pre-obese. It was allowed to assess the situation in order to carry out a planning and implementation of strategies aimed at promoting the practice of regular physical activity and careful eating in a greater number of students, with specific interventions for those who do not practice any physical exercise and those who already have pre-obesity. Distributed memory implementation strategies for the kinetic Monte Carlo Algorithm
This paper presents strategies to parallelize a previously implemented kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) algorithm. The process under simulation is the precipitation in an aluminum scandium alloy. The selected parallel algorithm is called synchronous parallel kinetic Monte Carlo (spkMC). spkMC was implemented with a distributed memory architecture and using the Message Passing Interface (MPI) communication protocol. In spkMC the different processes synchronize at regular points, called end of sprint. During a sprint there
is no interaction among processes. A checker board scheme was adopted to avoid possible conflicts among processes during each sprint. To optimize performance different implementations were explored, each one with a different computation vs. communication strategy. The obtained results prove that a rigorous distributed and parallel implementation reproduces accurately the statistical behavior observed with the sequential kMC. Results also prove that simulation time can be reduced with a distributed parallelization but, due to the non-deterministic nature of kMC, significant and scalable gains in parallelization oblige to introduce some
simplifications and approximations
