    An investigation of cattle birth seasonality using ÎŽ13C and ÎŽ18O profiles within first molar enamel

    Cattle (Bos taurus) are biologically able to breed year-round, potentially giving farmers the freedom to choose a calving strategy to best meet their economic goals. Thus, an accurate method to determine cattle birth seasonality from archaeological remains would prove to be a valuable tool when investigating a prehistoric farming community. This paper presents the results of intra-tooth isotope ratio analysis (ÎŽ18O, ÎŽ13C) of first, second and third molars from 15 cattle. The principal outcome is a possible new approach to determining cattle birth seasonality utilizing both carbon and oxygen isotope ratio measurements of first molar enamel. Although this technique requires verification through more extensive testing, particularly of modern material, initial results suggest that it may produce more accurate predictions of birth seasonality than techniques based on intra-tooth ÎŽ18O measurements of second and third molars

    Exploring the Iron‐Binding Potential of the Ocean Using a Combined pH and DOC Parameterization

    The major part of dissolved iron (DFe) in seawater is bound to organic matter, which prevents iron from adsorptive removal by sinking particles and essentially regulates the residence time of DFe and its availability for marine biota. Characteristics of iron‐binding ligands highly depend on their biological origin and physico‐chemical properties of seawater which may intensely alter under ongoing climate change. To understand environmental controls on the iron binding, we applied a function of pH and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to describe changes in the binding strength of organic ligands in a global biogeochemical model (REcoM). This function was derived based on calculations using a thermodynamic chemical speciation model NICA. This parameterization considerably improved the modeled DFe distribution, particularly in the surface Pacific and the global mesopelagic and deep waters, compared to our previous model simulations with a constant ligand or one prognostic ligand. This indicates that the organic binding of iron is apparently controlled by seawater pH in addition to its link to organic matter. We tested further the response of this control to environmental changes in a simulation with future pH of a high emission scenario. The response of the binding potential shows a complex pattern in different regions and is regulated by factors that have opposite effects on the binding potential. The relative contributions of these factors can change over time by a continual change of environmental conditions. A dynamic feedback system therefore needs to be considered to predict the marine iron cycle under ongoing climate change

    Arcsecond-resolution 12CO mapping of the yellow hypergiants IRC +10420 and AFGL 2343

    IRC +10420 and AFGL 2343 are the unique, known yellow hypergiants (YHGs) presenting a heavy circumstellar envelope (CSE). We aim to study the morphology, exceptional kinematics, and excitation conditions of their CSEs, and the implications for mass-loss processes. We have mapped the 12CO J=2-1 and 1-0 emission in these YHGs with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer and the 30m telescope. We developed LVG models in order to analyze their circumstellar characteristics. The maps show that the overall shape of both CSEs is approximately spherical, although they also reveal several aspherical features. The CSE around IRC +10420 shows a rounded extended halo surrounding a bright inner region, with both components presenting aspherical characteristics. It presents a brightness minimum at the center. The envelope around AFGL 2343 is a detached shell, showing spherical symmetry and clumpiness at a level of about 15% of the maximum brightness. The envelopes expand isotropically at about 35 km/s, about two or three times faster than typical CSEs around AGB stars. High temperatures (~ 200 K) are derived for the innermost regions in IRC +10420, while denser and cooler (~ 30 K) gas is found in AFGL 2343. The mass-loss processes in these YHGs have been found to be similar. The deduced mass-loss rates (~ 10E-4 - 10E-3 Msun/yr) are much higher than those obtained in AGB stars, and they present significant variations on time scales of ~ 1000 yr

    UV Circular Polarisation in Star Formation Regions : The Origin of Homochirality?

    Ultraviolet circularly polarised light has been suggested as the initial cause of the homochirality of organic molecules in terrestrial organisms, via enantiomeric selection of prebiotic molecules by asymmetric photolysis. We present a theoretical investigation of mechanisms by which ultraviolet circular polarisation may be produced in star formation regions. In the scenarios considered here, light scattering produces only a small percentage of net circular polarisation at any point in space, due to the forward throwing nature of the phase function in the ultraviolet. By contrast, dichroic extinction can produce a fairly high percentage of net circular polarisation (∌10%) and may therefore play a key role in producing an enantiomeric excessPeer reviewe

    Relationships between Larval and Juvenile Abundance of Winter-Spawned Fishes in North Carolina, USA

    We analyzed the relationships between the larval and juvenile abundances of selected estuarine-dependent fishes that spawn during the winter in continental shelf waters of the U.S. Atlantic coast. Six species were included in the analysis based on their ecological and economic importance and relative abundance in available surveys: spot Leiostomus xanthurus, pinfish Lagodon rhomboides, southern flounder Paralichthys lethostigma, summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus, Atlantic croaker Micropogonias undulatus, and Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus. Cross-correlation analysis was used to examine the relationships between the larval and juvenile abundances within species. Tests of synchrony across species were used to find similarities in recruitment dynamics for species with similar winter shelf-spawning life-history strategies. Positive correlations were found between the larval and juvenile abundances for three of the six selected species (spot, pinfish, and southern flounder). These three species have similar geographic ranges that primarily lie south of Cape Hatteras. There were no significant correlations between the larval and juvenile abundances for the other three species (summer flounder, Atlantic croaker, and Atlantic menhaden); we suggest several factors that could account for the lack of a relationship. Synchrony was found among the three southern species within both the larval and juvenile abundance time series. These results provide support for using larval ingress measures as indices of abundance for these and other species with similar geographic ranges and winter shelf-spawning life-history strategies

    A study of conditions in the upper atmosphere and their deduction from radio measurements

    Summary: In part 1 (a), after a brief historical outline of methods of ionospheric investigation and their development, the construction in this laboratory of manually operated equipment for sounding the ionosphere is described. Photographic records of good definition were taken at regular intervals over a period of four months during the summer of 1945-6. These were fully sealed for critical frequencies, true heights and thicknesses of all the layers present, and mean monthly values of these quantities for each hour are tabulated. An extensive correlation with magnetic data from Hermanus indicated good correlation between magnetic activity and disturbed ionospheric conditions. On these grounds some disturbed days were rejected, and others were eliminated on ionospheric grounds. Smoothed mean values are tabulated and graphs drawn. These are presented in concise form on "electron density maps", which are graphs showing lines of constant electron density plotted as functions of time and height. In part 1 (b), a new theory of layer-formation is developed, in which the temperature is assumed to vary linearly with height. The equations are compared at each step with those obtained by Chapman in his theory of layer-formation in an isothermal atmosphere. The equations for the maximum of electron density and its height are also given. The effect of the parameters on the shape of the layer is shown in graphical form. The equations are somewhat complex in form, but an ingenious graphical method has been devised suitable for the application of the theory to results given in the form of those in section 1 (a). From this application values are obtained for the temperature gradient, the temperature at 200 km. and its variation over the middle part of the day. The results obtained are in accordance with previous estimates, and offer numerical confirmation of the theory that the atmosphere expands bodily upwards during the middle part of a summer day

    Hospital food service: a comparative analysis of systems and introducing the ‘Steamplicity’ concept

    Background Patient meals are an integral part of treatment hence the provision and consumption of a balanced diet, essential to aid recovery. A number of food service systems are used to provide meals and the Steamplicity concept has recently been introduced. This seeks, through the application of a static, extended choice menu, revised patient ordering procedures, new cooking processes and individual patient food heated/cooked at ward level, to address some of the current hospital food service concerns. The aim of this small-scale study, therefore, was to compare a cook-chill food service operation against Steamplicity. Specifically, the goals were to measure food intake and wastage at ward level; ‘stakeholders’ (i.e. patients, staff, etc.) satisfaction with both systems; and patients’ acceptability of the food provided. Method The study used both quantitative (self-completed patient questionnaires, n = 52) and qualitative methods (semi-structured interviews, n = 16) with appropriate stakeholders including medical and food service staff, patients and their visitors. Results Patients preferred the Steamplicity system overall and in particular in terms of food choice, ordering, delivery and food quality. Wastage was considerably less with the Steamplicity system, although care must be taken to ensure that poor operating procedures do not negate this advantage. When the total weight of food consumed in the ward at each meal is divided by the number of main courses served, at lunch, the mean intake with the cook-chill system was 202 g whilst that for the Steamplicity system was 282 g and for the evening meal, 226 g compared with 310 g. Conclusions The results of this small study suggest that Steamplicity is more acceptable to patients and encourages the consumption of larger portions. Further evaluation of the Steamplicity system is warranted.
