    Two Dimensional Vortex Shedding from a Rotating Cluster of Cylinders

    The dynamics of two-dimensional vortex shedding from a rotating cluster of three cylinders was investigated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD). The cluster was formed from three circles with equal diameters in mutual contact and allowed to rotate about an axis passing through the cluster centroid. While immersed in an incompressible fluid with Reynolds number of 100, the cluster was allowed to rotate at non-dimensionalised rotation rates (℩) between 0 and 1. The rotation rates were non-dimensionalised using the free-stream velocity and the cluster characteristic diameter, the latter being equal to the diameter of the circle circumscribing the cluster. CFD simulations were performed using StarCCM+. Dynamic Mode Decomposition based on the two-dimensional vorticity field was used to decompose the field into its fundamental mode-shapes. It was then possible to relate the mode-shapes to lift and drag. Transverse and longitudinal mode-shapes corresponded to lift and drag, respectively. Lift–drag polars showed a more complex pattern dependent on ℩ in which the flow fields could be classified into three regimes: ℩ less than 0.3, greater than 0.5, and between 0.3 and 0.5. In general, the polars formed open curves in contrast to those of static cylinders, which were closed. However, some cases, such as ℩ = 0.01, 0.22, and 0.28, formed closed curves. Whether a lift-drag polar was closed or open was deduced to be determined by the ratio of Strouhal numbers calculated using lift and drag time series, with closed curves forming when the ratio is an integer

    Zinc oxide films grown by galvanic deposition from 99% metals basis zinc nitrate electrolyte

    The use of relatively low purity zinc nitrate for electrochemical deposition of compact ZnO films is attractive for large scale production because of the cost saving potential. ZnO films were grown on SnO2:F and magnetron sputtered ZnO:Al templates using a three electrode potentiostatic system in galvanic mode. The electrolyte consisted of a 0.1 M zinc nitrate solution (either 99.998% or 99% purity) and 1 mM aluminium nitrate for extrinsic doping, when required. Moderate deposition rates of up to 0.9 nm s−1 were achieved on ZnO:Al templates with lower rates of up to 0.5 nm s−1 on SnO2:F templates. Observation of SEM images of the films revealed a wall-like morphology whose lateral thickness (parallel to the substrate) reduced as aluminium was added to the system either in the electrolyte or from the substrate. However, pre- deposition activation of the template by applying a negative voltage (approximately −2 V) allowed the growth of compact films even for the low purity electrolyte. The optical band gap energy of intrinsically doped films was lower than that of the Al doped films. The composite electrical conductivity of all the films studied, as inferred from sheet resistance and Hall effect measurements of the ZnO/template stacks was much less than that of the uncoated templates. A strong E2 (high) mode at around 437 cm−1 was visible in the Raman spectra for most films confirming the formation of ZnO. However, both the Raman modes and XRD reflections associated with wurtzite ZnO diminished for the Al doped films indicating a high level of mainly oxygen related defects. Based on these data, further studies are underway to improve the doping efficiency of aluminium, the crystalline structure and thus the conductivity of such films

    Hospital food service: a comparative analysis of systems and introducing the ‘Steamplicity’ concept

    Background Patient meals are an integral part of treatment hence the provision and consumption of a balanced diet, essential to aid recovery. A number of food service systems are used to provide meals and the Steamplicity concept has recently been introduced. This seeks, through the application of a static, extended choice menu, revised patient ordering procedures, new cooking processes and individual patient food heated/cooked at ward level, to address some of the current hospital food service concerns. The aim of this small-scale study, therefore, was to compare a cook-chill food service operation against Steamplicity. Specifically, the goals were to measure food intake and wastage at ward level; ‘stakeholders’ (i.e. patients, staff, etc.) satisfaction with both systems; and patients’ acceptability of the food provided. Method The study used both quantitative (self-completed patient questionnaires, n = 52) and qualitative methods (semi-structured interviews, n = 16) with appropriate stakeholders including medical and food service staff, patients and their visitors. Results Patients preferred the Steamplicity system overall and in particular in terms of food choice, ordering, delivery and food quality. Wastage was considerably less with the Steamplicity system, although care must be taken to ensure that poor operating procedures do not negate this advantage. When the total weight of food consumed in the ward at each meal is divided by the number of main courses served, at lunch, the mean intake with the cook-chill system was 202 g whilst that for the Steamplicity system was 282 g and for the evening meal, 226 g compared with 310 g. Conclusions The results of this small study suggest that Steamplicity is more acceptable to patients and encourages the consumption of larger portions. Further evaluation of the Steamplicity system is warranted.     Ngrams and Engrams: the use of structural and conceptual features to discriminate between English translations of religious texts

    In this paper, we present experiments using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) program, a ‘closed-class keyword’ (CCK) analysis and a ‘correspondence analysis’ (CA) to examine whether the Scientology texts of L. Ron Hubbard are linguistically and conceptually like those of other religions. A Kruskal–Wallis test comparing the frequencies of LIWC category words in the Scientology texts and the English translations of the texts of five other religions showed that there were eighteen categories for which the Scientology texts differed from the others, and between one and seventeen for the other religions. In the CCK experiment, keywords typical of each religion were found, both by comparing the religious texts with one another and with the Brown corpus of general English. The most typical keywords were looked up in a concordancer and were manually coded with conceptual tags. The set of categories found for the Scientology texts showed little overlap with those found for the others. Our CA experiments produced fairly clear clusters of texts by religion. Scientology texts were seen at one pole on the first factor, with Christian and Islamic texts at the other. It appears that, in several ways, the Scientology texts are dissimilar to the texts of some of the world's major religions

    UV Circular Polarisation in Star Formation Regions : The Origin of Homochirality?

    Ultraviolet circularly polarised light has been suggested as the initial cause of the homochirality of organic molecules in terrestrial organisms, via enantiomeric selection of prebiotic molecules by asymmetric photolysis. We present a theoretical investigation of mechanisms by which ultraviolet circular polarisation may be produced in star formation regions. In the scenarios considered here, light scattering produces only a small percentage of net circular polarisation at any point in space, due to the forward throwing nature of the phase function in the ultraviolet. By contrast, dichroic extinction can produce a fairly high percentage of net circular polarisation (∌10%) and may therefore play a key role in producing an enantiomeric excessPeer reviewe

    Mindcraft, a mobile mental health monitoring platform for children and young people: development and acceptability pilot study

    BACKGROUND: Children and young people's mental health is a growing public health concern, which is further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mobile health apps, particularly those using passive smartphone sensor data, present an opportunity to address this issue and support mental well-being. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate a mobile mental health platform for children and young people, Mindcraft, which integrates passive sensor data monitoring with active self-reported updates through an engaging user interface to monitor their well-being. METHODS: A user-centered design approach was used to develop Mindcraft, incorporating feedback from potential users. User acceptance testing was conducted with a group of 8 young people aged 15-17 years, followed by a pilot test with 39 secondary school students aged 14-18 years, which was conducted for a 2-week period. RESULTS: Mindcraft showed encouraging user engagement and retention. Users reported that they found the app to be a friendly tool helping them to increase their emotional awareness and gain a better understanding of themselves. Over 90% of users (36/39, 92.5%) answered all active data questions on the days they used the app. Passive data collection facilitated the gathering of a broader range of well-being metrics over time, with minimal user intervention. CONCLUSIONS: The Mindcraft app has shown promising results in monitoring mental health symptoms and promoting user engagement among children and young people during its development and initial testing. The app's user-centered design, the focus on privacy and transparency, and a combination of active and passive data collection strategies have all contributed to its efficacy and receptiveness among the target demographic. By continuing to refine and expand the app, the Mindcraft platform has the potential to contribute meaningfully to the field of mental health care for young people

    Simultaneous monitoring of the photometric and polarimetric activity of the young star PV Cep in the optical/near-infrared bands

    We present the results of a simultaneous monitoring, lasting more than 2 years, of the optical and near-infrared photometric and polarimetric activity of the variable protostar PV Cep. During the monitoring period, an outburst has occurred in all the photometric bands, whose declining phase (Δ\DeltaJ ≈\approx 3 mag) lasted about 120 days. A time lag of ∌\sim 30 days between optical and infrared light curves has been measured and interpreted in the framework of an accretion event. This latter is directly recognizable in the significant variations of the near-infrared colors, that appear bluer in the outburst phase, when the star dominates the emission, and redder in declining phase, when the disk emission prevails. All the observational data have been combined to derive a coherent picture of the complex morphology of the whole PV Cep system, that, in addition to the star and the accretion disk, is composed also by a variable biconical nebula. In particular, the mutual interaction between all these components is the cause of the high value of the polarization (≈\approx 20%) and of its fluctuations. The observational data concur to indicate that PV Cep is not a genuine EXor star, but rather a more complex object; moreover the case of PV Cep leads to argue about the classification of other recently discovered young sources in outburst, that have been considered, maybe over-simplifying, as EXor.Comment: Accepted for publication on Ap

    Extended H? emission line sources from UWISH2

    We present the extended source catalogue for the UKIRT Wide Field Infrared Survey for H2 (UWISH2). The survey is unbiased along the inner Galactic Plane from l ? 357° to l ? 65° and |b| ? 1.5° and covers 209 deg2. A further 42.0 and 35.5 deg2 of high dust column density regions have been targeted in Cygnus and Auriga. We have identified 33 200 individual extended H2 features. They have been classified to be associated with about 700 groups of jets and outflows, 284 individual (candidate) planetary nebulae, 30 supernova remnants and about 1300 photodissociation regions. We find a clear decline of star formation activity (traced by H2 emission from jets and photodissociation regions) with increasing distance from the Galactic Centre. About 60 per cent of the detected candidate planetary nebulae have no known counterpart and 25 per cent of all supernova remnants have detectable H2 emission associated with them

    The evolutionary status of the semiregular variable QYSge

    Repeated spectroscopic observations made with the 6m telescope of yielded new data on the radial-velocity variability of the anomalous yellow supergiant QYSge. The strongest and most peculiar feature in its spectrum is the complex profile of NaI D lines, which contains a narrow and a very wide emission components. The wide emission component can be seen to extend from -170 to +120 km/s, and at its central part it is cut by an absorption feature, which, in turn, is split into two subcomponents by a narrow (16km/s at r=2.5) emission peak. An analysis of all the Vr values leads us to adopt for the star a systemic velocity of Vr=-21.1 km/s, which corresponds to the position of the narrow emission component of NaI. The locations of emission-line features of NaI D lines are invariable, which point to their formation in regions that are external to the supergiant's photosphere. Differential line shifts of about 10km/s are revealed. The absorption lines in the spectrum of QYSge have a substantial width of FWHM~45 km/s. The method of model atmospheres is used to determine the following parameters: Teff=6250K, lg g=2.0, and microturbulence Vt=4.5km/s. The metallicity of the star is found to be somewhat higher than the solar one with an average overabundance of iron-peak elements of [Met/H]=+0.20. The star is found to be slightly overabundant in carbon and nitrogen, [C/Fe]=+0.25, [N/Fe]=+0.27. The alpha-process elements Mg, Si, and Ca are slightly overabundant [alpha/H]=+0.12. The strong sodium excess, [Na/Fe]=+0.75, is likely to be due to the dredge-up of the matter processed in the NeNa cycle. Heavy elements of the s-process are underabundant relative to the Sun. On the whole, the observed properties of QYSge do not give grounds for including this star into the group of RCrB or RVTau-type type objects.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables; accepted by Astrophys.     Pulsations and Long-Term Light Variability of Three Candidates to Protoplanetary Nebulae

    We present new photometric data and analysis of the long-duration UBV photoelectric observations for three candidates to protoplanetary objects - F-supergiants with IR-excesses located at large galactic latitudes, IRAS 18095+2704, IRAS 19386+0155, and IRAS 19500-1709. All three stars have revealed quasiperiodic low-amplitude variabilities caused by pulsations observed against the long-term trends of brightnesses. For IRAS 18095+2704=V887 Her we have found a pulsation period of 109 days and a linear trend of brightness under the constant colours if being averaged over the year timescale. The light curve of IRAS 19386+0155=V1648 Aql over 2000-2008 can be approximated by a wave with a main period of 102 days which is modulated by close frequency, with a period of 98 days, that results in brightness oscillations with a variable amplitude. V1648 Aql has also shown synchronous reddening together with a persistent rise of brightness in the V-band. IRAS 19500-1709=V5112 Sgr experiences irregular pulsations with the periods of 39 and 47 days.
