    Soft two-meson-exchange nucleon-nucleon potentials. I. Planar and crossed-box diagrams

    Pion-meson-exchange nucleon-nucleon potentials are derived for two nucleons in the intermediate states. The mesons we include are (i) pseudoscalar mesons: π,η,η\pi, \eta, \eta'; (ii) vector mesons: ρ,ω,ϕ\rho, \omega, \phi; (iii) scalar mesons: a0(980),ε(760),f0(975)a_{0}(980), \varepsilon(760), f_{0}(975); and (iv) the J=0J=0 contribution from the Pomeron. Strong dynamical pair suppression is assumed, and at the nucleon-nucleon-meson vertices Gaussian form factors are incorporated into the relativistic two-body framework using a dispersion representation for the pion- and meson-exchange amplitudes. The Fourier transformations are performed using factorization techniques for the energy denominators. The potentials are first calculated in the adiabatic approximation to all planar and crossed three-dimensional momentum-space π\pi-meson diagrams.     An accurate nucleon-nucleon potential with charge-independence breaking

    We present a new high-quality nucleon-nucleon potential with explicit charge dependence and charge asymmetry, which we designate Argonne v18v_{18}. The model has a charge-independent part with fourteen operator components that is an updated version of the Argonne v14v_{14} potential. Three additional charge-dependent and one charge-asymmetric operators are added, along with a complete electromagnetic interaction. The potential has been fit directly to the Nijmegen pppp and npnp scattering data base, low-energy nnnn scattering parameters, and deuteron binding energy. With 40 adjustable parameters it gives a χ2\chi^{2} per datum of 1.09 for 4301 pppp and npnp data in the range 0--350 MeV.Comment: 36 pages, PHY-7742-TH-9

    Perspectives in Global Helioseismology, and the Road Ahead

    We review the impact of global helioseismology on key questions concerning the internal structure and dynamics of the Sun, and consider the exciting challenges the field faces as it enters a fourth decade of science exploitation. We do so with an eye on the past, looking at the perspectives global helioseismology offered in its earlier phases, in particular the mid-to-late 1970s and the 1980s. We look at how modern, higher-quality, longer datasets coupled with new developments in analysis, have altered, refined, and changed some of those perspectives, and opened others that were not previously available for study.     Do soil fertilization and forest canopy foliage affect the growth and photosynthesis of Amazonian saplings?

    Most Amazonian soils are highly weathered and poor in nutrients. Therefore, photosynthesis and plant growth should positively respond to the addition of mineral nutrients. Surprisingly, no study has been carried out in situ in the central Amazon to address this issue for juvenile trees. The objective of this study was to determine how photosynthetic rates and growth of tree saplings respond to the addition of mineral nutrients, to the variation in leaf area index of the forest canopy, and to changes in soil water content associated with rainfall seasonality. We assessed the effect of adding a slow-release fertilizer. We determined plant growth from 2010 to 2012 and gas exchange in the wet and dry season of 2012. Rainfall seasonality led to variations in soil water content, but it did not affect sapling growth or leaf gas exchange parameters. Although soil amendment increased phosphorus content by 60 %, neither plant growth nor the photosynthetic parameters were influenced by the addition of mineral nutrients. However, photosynthetic rates and growth of saplings decreased as the forest canopy became denser. Even when Amazonian soils are poor in nutrients, photosynthesis and sapling growth are more responsive to slight variations in light availability in the forest understory than to the availability of nutrients. Therefore, the response of saplings to future increases in atmospheric [CO2] will not be limited by the availability of mineral nutrients in the soil

    Measurement of CP asymmetries and branching fraction ratios of B− decays to two charm mesons

    The CPCP asymmetries of seven BB^- decays to two charm mesons are measured using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb19\text{fb}^{-1} of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment. Decays involving a D0D^{*0} or DsD^{*-}_s meson are analysed by reconstructing only the D0D^0 or DsD^-_s decay products. This paper presents the first measurement of ACP(BDsD0)\mathcal{A}^{CP}(B^- \rightarrow D^{*-}_s D^0) and ACP(BDsD0)\mathcal{A}^{CP}(B^- \rightarrow D^{-}_s D^{*0}), and the most precise measurement of the other five CPCP asymmetries. There is no evidence of CPCP violation in any of the analysed decays.     The LHCb upgrade I

    The LHCb upgrade represents a major change of the experiment. The detectors have been almost completely renewed to allow running at an instantaneous luminosity five times larger than that of the previous running periods. Readout of all detectors into an all-software trigger is central to the new design, facilitating the reconstruction of events at the maximum LHC interaction rate, and their selection in real time. The experiment's tracking system has been completely upgraded with a new pixel vertex detector, a silicon tracker upstream of the dipole magnet and three scintillating fibre tracking stations downstream of the magnet. The whole photon detection system of the RICH detectors has been renewed and the readout electronics of the calorimeter and muon systems have been fully overhauled. The first stage of the all-software trigger is implemented on a GPU farm. The output of the trigger provides a combination of totally reconstructed physics objects, such as tracks and vertices, ready for final analysis, and of entire events which need further offline reprocessing. This scheme required a complete revision of the computing model and rewriting of the experiment's software
