Influence of chirping the Raman lasers in an atom gravimeter: phase shifts due to the Raman light shift and to the finite speed of light
We present here an analysis of the influence of the frequency dependence of
the Raman laser light shifts on the phase of a Raman-type atom gravimeter.
Frequency chirps are applied to the Raman lasers in order to compensate gravity
and ensure the resonance of the Raman pulses during the interferometer. We show
that the change in the Raman light shift when this chirp is applied only to one
of the two Raman lasers is enough to bias the gravity measurement by a fraction
of Gal (Gal~=~~m/s). We also show that this effect is
not compensated when averaging over the two directions of the Raman wavevector
. This thus constitutes a limit to the rejection efficiency of the
-reversal technique. Our analysis allows us to separate this effect from the
effect of the finite speed of light, which we find in perfect agreement with
expected values. This study highlights the benefit of chirping symmetrically
the two Raman lasers

On-chip thermal calibration with 8 CB liquid crystal of micro-thermal device
International audienceA micro sensor integrated on a micro-thermal device for bioexperiments requires affordable, rapid and accurate thermal 10 calibration. However, there has been no way to make thermal calibration directly under the microscope. This was the limitations in making numbers of bioexperiments with micro thermal devices. We present in this paper an inexpensive, fast and accurate way to realise such thermal calibration directly 15 under the microscope. We used a thermotropic liquid crystal: the 4-n-octyl-4-cyanobiphenyl(8CB) in order to reach the 313 K isothermal phase change on the device. Coupled with FEA simulations, we proved that this method enables us to make easy and accurate thermal calibration of micro-thermal device for 20 biological application
The Problem of Marginality in Model Reductions of Turbulence
Reduced quasilinear (QL) and nonlinear (gradient-driven) models with scale
separations, commonly used to interpret experiments and to forecast turbulent
transport levels in magnetised plasmas are tested against nonlinear models
without scale separations (flux-driven). Two distinct regimes of turbulence --
either far above threshold or near marginal stability -- are investigated with
Boltzmann electrons. The success of reduced models especially hinges on the
reproduction of nonlinear fluxes. Good agreement between models is found above
threshold whilst reduced models would significantly underpredict fluxes near
marginality, overlooking mesoscale flow organisation and turbulence
self-advection. Constructive prescriptions whereby to improve reduced models is
discussed
Control of the Refractive Index in Photopolymerizable Materials for (2+1)D Solitary Wave Guide Formation
We report an experimental and theoretical study on the optimization of (2+1)D self-written waveguide formation inside a photopolymerizable material. The accurate control of the refractive index value inside the bulk of the material during the polymerization process gives us the opportunity to define a virtual core and a virtual cladding for the system. The V value which characterizes the guidance properties of a fiber can be applied to this propagation. The control of the V value allows us to propagate single mode or multimode waveguides on a few centimeters. Numerical simulations of these waveguides based on a paraxial model including both photopolymerization and Kerr effect give very good agreement with our experimental results
Single and combined impacts of irradiation and surgery on lymphatic vasculature and fibrosis associated to secondary lymphedema
peer reviewedLymphedema (LD) refers to a condition of lymphatic dysfunction associated with excessive fluid accumulation, fibroadipose tissue deposition and swelling. In industrialized countries, LD development mainly results from a local disruption of the lymphatic network by an infection or cancer-related surgery (secondary LD). In the absence of efficient therapy, animal models are needed to decipher the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying LD and test putative drugs. In this study, we optimized and characterized a murine model of LD that combines an irradiation of the mice hind limb and a radical surgery (lymph node resection associated to lymphatic vessel ligation). We investigated the respective roles of irradiation and surgery in LD formation by comparing their impacts, alone or in combination (with different intervention sequences), on eight different features of the pathology: swelling (paw thickness), indocyanine green (ICG) clearance, lymphatic vasculature remodeling, epidermal and dermal thickening, adipocyte accumulation, inflammatory cell infiltration and collagen deposition. This study supports the importance of radiation prior to surgery to experimentally induce a rapid, severe and sustained tissue remodeling harboring the different hallmarks of LD. We provide the first experimental evidence for an excessive deposition of periostin (POSTN) and tenascin-C (TNC) in LD. Through a computerized method of digital image quantification, we established the spatial map of lymphatic expansion, as well as collagen, POSTN and TNC deposition in papillary and reticular dermis of lymphedematous skins. This mouse model is available to study the patho-physiology of LD and test potential therapeutic targets
Sedimentation rates in the Makarov Basin, central Arctic Ocean: A paleomagnetic and rock magnetic approach
Three long sediment cores from the Makarov Basin have been subjected to detailed paleomagnetic and rock magnetic analyses. Investigated sediments are dominated by normal polarity including short reversal excursions, indicating that most of the sediments are of Brunhes age. In general, the recovered sediments show only low to moderate variability in concentration and grain size of the remanence-carrying minerals. Estimations of relative paleointensity variations yielded a well-documented succession of pronounced lows and highs that could be correlated to published reference curves. However, together with five accelerator mass spectrometry C-14 ages and an incomplete Be-10 record, still two different interpretations of the paleomagnetic data are possible, with long-term sedimentation rates of either 1.3 or 4 cm kyr(-1) However, both models implicate highly variable sedimentation rates of up to 10 cm kyr(-1), and abrupt changes in rock magnetic parameters might even indicate several hiatuses
Cytogenetic analysis of Astylus antis (Perty, 1830) (Coleoptera, Melyridae): Karyotype, heterochromatin and location of ribosomal genes
Cytogenetic analysis of Astylus antis using mitotic and meiotic cells was performed to characterize the haploid and diploid numbers, sex determination system, chromosome morphology, constitutive heterochromatin distribution pattern and chromosomes carrying nucleolus organizer regions (NORs). Analysis of spermatogonial metaphase cells revealed the diploid number 2n = 18, with mostly metacentric chromosomes. Metaphase I cells exhibited 2n = 8II+Xyp and a parachute configuration of the sex chromosomes. Spermatogonial metaphase cells submitted to C-banding showed the presence of small dots of constitutive heterochromatin in the centromeric regions of nearly all the autosomes and on the short arm of the X chromosome (Xp), as well as an additional band on one of the arms of pair 1. Mitotic cells submitted to double staining with base-specific fluorochromes (DAPI-CMA3 ) revealed no regions rich in A+T or G+C sequences. Analysis of spermatogonial mitotic cells after sequential Giemsa/AgNO 3 staining did not reveal any specific mark on the chromosomes. Meiotic metaphase I cells stained with silver nitrate revealed a strong impregnation associated to the sex chromosomes, and in situ hybridization with an 18S rDNA probe showed ribosomal cistrons in an autosomal bivalent
