    Effect of haptic geometry in C-loop intraocular lenses on optical quality

    The biomechanical stability of intraocular lenses (IOLs) must achieve high-quality optical performance and clinical outcomes after cataract surgery. For this reason, the quality and performance features of the IOLs should be previously analysed following the Standard ISO 11979-2 and ISO 11979-3. The ISO 11979-3 tries to reproduce the behaviour of the IOL in the capsular bag by compressing the lens between two clamps. With this test, it has been demonstrated that the haptic design is a crucial factor to obtain biomechanical stability. Hence, the main goal of this study was to design an aberration-free aspheric IOL and to study the influence of haptic geometry on the optical quality. For that purpose, 5 hydrophobic IOLs with different haptic design were manufactured and their biomechanical stability was compared experimentally and numerically. The IOLs were classified as stiff and flexible designs depending on their haptic geometry. The biomechanical response was measured by means of the compression force, the axial displacement, the angle of contact or contact area, the decentration, the tilt and the strain energy. The results suggest that in vitro and in silico compression tests present similar responses for the IOLs analysed. Furthermore, the flexible IOL designs presented better biomechanical stability than stiff designs. These results were correlated with the optical performance, where the optical quality decreases with worst biomechanical stability. This numerical methodology provides an indisputable advance regarding IOL designs, leading to reduce costs by exploring a feasible space of solutions during the product design process and prior to manufacturing

    Socio-spatial segregation in Culiacan, Mexico (2000-2010): From dual city to fragmented city?

    [spa] Con el fin de contribuir al entendimiento de los procesos de segregación socioespacial de las ciudades medias mexicanas, este trabajo analiza la distribución espacial de la población de Culiacán, México, empleando distintas características sociodemográficas que dan cuenta de la manera en que se vive la segregación socioespacial en el territorio, así como su evolución entre los años 2000 y 2010. Los resultados indican la existencia de rasgos segregativos que coinciden con el modelo tradicional latinoamericano, visualizados en la ubicación central de los grupos sociales más privilegiados y en la dispersión de los estratos más bajos hacia las periferias. A su vez, se presentan procesos novedosos que apuntan a un cambio desde el tradicional patrón de segregación centro-periferia hacia el nuevo modelo de la ciudad fragmentada, destacándose la apertura de alternativas residenciales para las élites fuera de los espacios centrales, aunque con desarrollos de tipo cerrado y contiguos a asentamientos de bajos ingresos.[eng] This paper analyzes the spatial distribution of the population of Culiacán, Mexico, using various sociodemographic features that explain the way socio-spatial segrega- tion is experienced, in order to contribute to an understanding of the socio-spatial segregation processes of medium-sized cities throughout the country as well as their evolution between 2000 and 2010. The results indicate the existence of segregative features that coincide with the traditional Latin American model, visualized in the central location of the most privileged social groups and the banishment of the lowest strata to the peripheries. At the same time, new processes are presented that point to a shift from the traditional center-periphery segregation pattern to the new model of the fragmented city, highlighting the creation of residential alternatives for the elites outside central spaces, with gated communities adjoining low income settlements

    Multipactor radiation analysis within a waveguide region based on a frequency-domain representation of the dynamics of charged particles

    [EN] A technique for the accurate computation of the electromagnetic fields radiated by a charged particle moving within a parallel-plate waveguide is presented. Based on a transformation of the time-varying current density of the particle into a time-harmonic current density, this technique allows the evaluation of the radiated electromagnetic fields both in the frequency and time domains, as well as in the near- and far-field regions. For this purpose, several accelerated versions of the parallel-plate Green's function in the frequency domain have been considered. The theory has been successfully applied to the multipactor discharge occurring within a two metal-plates region.     Remote sensing detection of nutrient uptake in vineyards using narrow-band hyperspectral imagery

    This manuscript delves further into the assessment of narrow-band vegetation indices derived from hyperspectral imagery acquired at 1 m spatial resolution with the Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI). Narrow-band indices proposed in this study were assessed as indicators of biochemical and structural parameters in Vitis vinifera L., observing their relationships with foliar variables such as N, P, K, Ca, Fe, Mg and chlorophyll a+b concentration (Ca+b). Hyperspectral indices were assessed to study their capability for vegetation condition monitoring as a function of fertilization treatments applied (basically extracts of Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed and chelates), showing associations with field variables. Narrow-band vegetation indices displayed sensitivity to vineyard growth and condition as a function of seaweed fertilization and other supplementary mineral correctors, such as chelates. This work shows the interest of using new narrow-band hyperspectral remote sensing indices for vineyard monitoring due to their potential to indicate physiological condition.

    MEGARA Optics: stain removal in PBM2Y prisms

    MEGARA is the new integral-field and multi-object optical spectrograph for the GTC. For medium and high resolution, the dispersive elements are volume phase holographic gratings, sandwiched between two flat windows and two prisms of high optical precision. The prisms are made of Ohara PBM2Y optical glass. After the prisms polishing process, some stains appeared on the surfaces. For this, in this work is shown the comparative study of five different products (muriatic acid, paint remover, sodium hydroxide, aqua regia and rare earth liquid polish) used for trying to eliminate the stains of the HR MEGARA prisms. It was found that by polishing with the hands the affected area, and using a towel like a kind of pad, and polish during five minutes using rare earth, the stains disappear completely affecting only a 5% the rms of the surface quality. Not so the use of the other products that did not show any apparent result

    The type Ib supernova 2010O: an explosion in a Wolf-Rayet X-ray binary?

    The type Ib supernova 2010O was recently discovered in the interacting starburst galaxy Arp 299. We present an analysis of two archival Chandra X-ray observations of Arp 299, taken before the explosion and show that there is a transient X-ray source at a position consistent with the supernova. Due to the diffuse emission, the background is difficult to estimate. We estimate the flux of the transient from the difference of the two X-ray images and conclude that the transient can be described by a 0.225 keV black body with a luminosity of 2.5+/-0.7 10^{39} erg/s for a distance of 41 Mpc. These properties put the transient in between the Galactic black hole binary XTE J1550-564 and the ultra-luminous X-ray binaries NGC 1313 X-1 and X-2. The high level of X-ray variability associated with the active starburst makes it impossible to rule out a chance alignment. If the source is associated with the supernova, it suggests SN2010O is the explosion of the second star in a Wolf-Rayet X-ray binary, such as Cyg X-3, IC 10 X-1 and NGC 300 X-1.Comment: Accepted version.     Anisotropic lattice expansion determined during flash sintering of BiFeO3 by in-situ energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction

    BiFeO3 has a Curie temperature (TC) of 825 °C, making it difficult to sinter using conventional methods while maintaining the purity of the material, as unavoidably secondary phases appear at temperatures above Tc. Flash sintering is a relatively new technique that saves time and energy compared to other sintering methods. BiFeO3 was flash sintered at 500 °C to achieve 90% densification. In-situ energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDXRD) revealed that the material did not undergo any phase transformation, having been sintered well below the TC.     Se da a conocer el hallazgo de una defensa incompleta de Elephantidae indet. en depósitos de gravas correspondientes a una terraza del río Gállego, próxima a la localidad de Zuera, de edad Pleistoceno inferior tardío. Los estudios estratigráficos realizados han permitido definir cuatro unidades denominadas de base a techo como U1 a U4 que en conjunto integran una sucesión de unos 35 m de espesor, situándose la defensa a techo de la unidad U1. El análisis tafonómico preliminar parece indicar que se trataría de un fósil reelaborado. Los depósitos se encuentran afectados por procesos kársticos en evaporitas que han dado lugar a estructuras de deformación con geometría sinforme laxa o tubular (delimitada por fallas). La existencia de estos procesos kársticos ha favorecido la conservación del resto fósil encontrado. A partial tusk of Elephantidae indet. was recently discovered in Early Pleistocene gravel deposits belonging to a terrace of the Gállego River, near to Zuera village. Stratigraphic studies have allowed four sedimentary units to be differentiated, named (from base to top) U1 to U4. The whole succession is 35 m thick; the tusk remains were collected at the top of unit U1. Preliminary report on the taphonomy suggests that this specimen could be a reworked fossil. Evaporite dissolution related with karst processes caused deformation structures in the overlying Quaternary deposits. Synform and tubular shapes (delimited by faults) were generated. Karstification favoured the preservation of the fossil remains
