Unemployment and entrepreneurship: a cyclical relationship?
This paper presents a cyclical model for unemployment and entrepreneurship. The estimated periodicity of the cycles for the US, the UK, Spain and Ireland is between 5 and 10 years, and the orders of integration are smaller (greater) than 1 if the underlying disturbances are autocorrelated (white noise), corresponding to dampen cycles (limit cycle).New firms, Employment creation, cycles.
Persistence on airline accidents
This paper analyses airline accidents data from 1927-2006. The fractional integration methodology is adopted. It is shown that airline accidents are persistent and (fractionally) cointegrated with airline traffic. Thus, there exists an equilibrium relation between air accidents and airline traffic, with the effect of the shocks to that relationship disappearing in the long run. Policy implications are derived for countering accidents events.

This paper analyses airline accident data from 1927-2006, through fractional integration. It is shown that airline accidents are persistent and (fractionally) cointegrated with airline traffic. There exists a negative relation between air accidents and airline traffic, with the effect of the shocks to that relationship disappearing in the long run. Policy implications are derived for countering accident events.Accidents; airline; Time series; Persistence; Long memory; Cointegration.
Neonatal Appendicitis – an Uncommon Diagnosis, not to be Forgotten
Acute appendicitis is a common disease in older children, but extremely rare in the
neonate. Nevertheless, the true incidence might be underestimated, given the difficulty
of the diagnosis. Subtle clinical signs and symptoms usually result in high morbidity
and mortality due to delayed diagnosis and surgical intervention. The presentation
of neonatal appendicitis can be identical to necrotizing enterocolitis, leading to
misdiagnosis. Appendicitis should therefore be considered in the differential diagnosis
for necrotizing enterocolitis and needs strong clinical suspicion.
We report a case of a premature newborn who presented with vomiting, abdominal
distension and free intra-peritoneal air on plain x-ray. He was initially diagnosed
and treated as necrotizing enterocolitis, but the absence of clinical improvement with
standard treatment led to exploratory laparotomy. Surgical exploration revealed an
acutely inflamed appendix with normal small and large intestines and appendectomy
was performed. The post-operatory period was uneventful and the infant was
discharged home. Follow-up confirmed a normal growth and neurodevelopment.
We herein report this case in order to raise awareness to this unusual pathology, so
that an early diagnosis and treatment can lead to a better outcome, improving survival
rate and reducing long term morbidity. We believe uncommon pathologies, like
neonatal appendicitis, should be reported to facilitate proper epidemiologic studies
Desarrollo ontogénico de Parablennius pilocornis (Pisces: Blenniidae) en condiciones controladas
The full developmental sequence from egg to juvenile of Parablennius pilicornis in controlled conditions is described. Embryonic development lasted 9 days at 18.0 to 21.0°C, 14 days at 17.0 to 20.0°C, 16 days at 16.0 to 19.0°C and 17 days at 14.0 to 18.5°C. Newly hatched larvae measured 3.1 mm total length (TL), had the mouth and anus open, pigmented eyes, almost no yolk, and the pectoral fins were small and unpigmented. Most larvae settled between day 66 and 69 after hatching (27.0 mm TL) and showed full juvenile pigmentation patterns between day 91 and 93 (30.0 mm TL). However, on day 61/62 after hatching (when they were more than 25.0 mm) they began to show a complex agonistic repertoire.
Hospitality in women’s wear retail in São Paulo City
This article investigates the relationship between seller and customer in retail women’s wear business in São Paulo, considering hospitality driven strategies adopted by it. It is assumed that in this segment people tend to play different roles according to common patterns of behavior, and that hospitality issues add a lot to what is already established as standard sales procedures. As relationships are increased, significant links are created, revealing different motives involving hospitality. A qualitative approach to in-depth semi-structured interviews was used. Owners, managers, sellers and customers were interviewed. Content analysis was used for data evaluation, adding hospitality elements to business such as consideration, concern, compassion and desire to please, which were identified as a significant asset among the sources. Keywords: Hospitality, fashion retail, seller, customer, actin
Asymptotic Behaviour for a Class of Non-monotone Delay Differential Systems with Applications
The paper concerns a class of n-dimensional non-autonomous delay differential equations obtained by adding a non-monotone delayed perturbation to a linear homogeneous cooperative system of ordinary differential equations. This family covers a wide set of models used in structured population dynamics. By exploiting the stability and the monotone character of the linear ODE, we establish sufficient conditions for both the extinction of all the populations and the permanence of the system. In the case of DDEs with autonomous coefficients (but possible time-varying delays), sharp results are obtained, even in the case of a reducible community matrix. As a sub-product, our results improve some criteria for autonomous systems published in recent literature. As an important illustration, the extinction, persistence and permanence of a non-autonomous Nicholson system with patch structure and multiple time-dependent delays are analysed.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad /FEDER (MTM2015-66330)Fundaçao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia under project UID/MAT/-04561/201
Characterization of nutritional, physicochemical, and phytochemical composition and antioxidant capacity of three strawberry “Fragaria X ananassa Duch.” Cultivars (“Primoris”, “Endurance”, and “Portola”) from western region of Portugal
In this study, nutritional composition (protein, lipids, carbohydrates, ash, and moisture), physicochemical properties (soluble solid content, titratable acidity, texture and instrumental colour on surface, and internal section), phytochemicals (total phenolic content and anthocyanin content), and antioxidant capacity (DPPH—2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging capacity and ferric-reducing antioxidant power) of three strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) cultivars (cv. “Primoris”, cv. “Endurance”, and cv. “Portola”) produced in the western region of Portugal (Caldas da Rainha) were evaluated. From the obtained, results no significant differences (P > 0.05) in nutritional composition were detected in all of the cultivars; with the exception of lower protein content observed in cv. “Portola” (0.57 g/100 g +- 0.04; P 0.05) were found in any of the cultivars, which revealed a similar redness. The cv. “Endurance” revealed the highest bioactivity content compared to the other cultivars. Overall, these results provide important information about the high quality of strawberry produced in the western region of Portugal and may be used as a tool for adding value to a functional food in the Mediterranean diet due to the phytochemical composition and nutritional value of strawberry fruits.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Self-employment by gender in the EU: convergence and clusters
[Abstract]: This paper studies the convergence of self-employment by gender in the European Union, through tests for the order of integration and cluster analysis, in order to investigate the occurrence of two types of convergence: between genders and among European countries. The paper makes two contributions to the literature: 1) theoretically, it provides useful insights into the macroeconomic determinants of self-employment; 2) methodologically, it uses unit roots, fractional integration and cluster analysis to assess convergence. The empirical results point at mixed evidence of convergence, but with clear differences between the core and the periphery of Europe.Juan Carlos Cuestas acknowledges the financial support from the MINEIC-AEIFEDER ECO2017-85503-R and ECO2017-83255-C3-3-P projects both of them from ‘Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad’ (MINEIC), `Agencia Estatal de Investigación’ (AEI) Spain and `Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional’ (FEDER), and the UJI project UJI-B2019-15.
