    The Disunity of Consciousness

    It is commonplace for both philosophers and cognitive scientists to express their allegiance to the "unity of consciousness". This is the claim that a subject’s phenomenal consciousness, at any one moment in time, is a single thing. This view has had a major influence on computational theories of consciousness. In particular, what we call single-track theories dominate the literature, theories which contend that our conscious experience is the result of a single consciousness-making process or mechanism in the brain. We argue that the orthodox view is quite wrong: phenomenal experience is not a unity, in the sense of being a single thing at each instant. It is a multiplicity, an aggregate of phenomenal elements, each of which is the product of a distinct consciousness-making mechanism in the brain. Consequently, cognitive science is in need of a multi-track theory of consciousness; a computational model that acknowledges both the manifold nature of experience, and its distributed neural basis

    Argumentum ad misericordiam - the critical intimacies of victimhood

    This article discusses the widespread use of victim tropes in contemporary Anglo-American culture by using cultural theory to analyse key social media memes circulating on Facebook in 2015. Since the growth of social media, victim stories have been proliferating, and each demands a response. Victim narratives are rhetorical, they are designed to elicit pity and shame the perpetrator. They are deployed to stimulate political debate and activism, as well as to appeal to an all-purpose humanitarianism. Victimology has its origins in Law and Criminology, but this paper opens up the field more broadly to think about the cultural politics of victimhood, to consider how the victim-figure can be appropriated by/for different purposes, particularly racial and gender politics, including in the case of Rachel Dolezal, and racial passing. In formulating an ethical response to the lived experience of victims, we need to think about the different kinds of critical intimacies elicited by such media

    Catabolic enzyme activities in relation to premigratory fattening and muscle hypertrophy in the gray catbird ( Dumetella carolinensis )

    The flight muscles of the gray catbird ( Dumetella carolinensis ) were examined to determine if short term adjustments occur in the activity of key catabolic enzymes during preparation for long distance migration. The aerobic capacity of the pectoralis muscle as indicated by citrate synthase activity (CS) is among the highest reported for skeletal muscle (200 μmoles [min·g fresh mass] −1 at 25°C). The mass specific aerobic capacity as indicated by CS activity or cytochrome c concentration does not change during premigratory fattening (Fig. 2) or in relation to the muscle hypertrophy that occurs concomitantly. The maintenance of mass specific aerobic capacity indicates that the total aerobic capacity increases in proportion to the increase in muscle size. The augmented potential for total aerobic power output is considered an adaptation to meet the increased power requirements of flight due to the increased body mass. Additionally, the capacity to oxidize fatty acids, as indicated by β-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase activity, approximately doubles during premigratory fattening (from 35 to 70 μmoles [min·g fresh mass] −1 at 25°C; Fig. 1A). This adaptation should favor fatty acid oxidation, thereby sparing carbohydrate and prolonging endurance.     Characterising the influence of cerebellum on the neuroplastic modulation of intracortical motor circuits.

    The cerebellum (CB) has extensive connections with both cortical and subcortical areas of the brain, and is known to strongly influence function in areas it projects to. In particular, research using non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) has shown that CB projections to primary motor cortex (M1) are likely important for facilitating the learning of new motor skills, and that this process may involve modulation of late indirect (I) wave inputs in M1. However, the nature of this relationship remains unclear, particularly in regards to how CB influences the contribution of the I-wave circuits to neuroplastic changes in M1. Within the proposed research, we will therefore investigate how CB effects neuroplasticity of the I-wave generating circuits. This will be achieved by downregulating CB excitability while concurrently applying a neuroplastic intervention that specifically targets the I-wave circuitry. The outcomes of this study will provide valuable neurophysiological insight into key aspects of the motor network, and may inform the development of optimized interventions for modifying motor learning in a targeted way

    6 páginas, 2 figuras.The increasing number of reports of patients with APL (Ahmad et al, 1999a;1999b;Kruse et al, 1999;Sprecher et al, 1999;Aita et al, 2000;Zlotogorski et al, 2002a) led us to hypothesize that APL is much more common than previously considered and in some cases is misdiagnosed as AU. This misdiagnosis is most probably due to lack of awareness, lack of fixed diagnostic criteria until recently (Zlotogorski et al, 2002b), and the belief that patients with APL are found only rarely and in consanguineous families. In this study, we identified three small nonconsanguineous families with only one offspring affected by early onset hair loss that never regrew. Importantly, these patients either had an associated papular eruption and/or failed to respond to treatment for AU.
