Low-Temperature Expansions and Correlation Functions of the Z_3-Chiral Potts Model
Using perturbative methods we derive new results for the spectrum and
correlation functions of the general Z_3-chiral Potts quantum chain in the
massive low-temperature phase. Explicit calculations of the ground state energy
and the first excitations in the zero momentum sector give excellent
approximations and confirm the general statement that the spectrum in the
low-temperature phase of general Z_n-spin quantum chains is identical to one in
the high-temperature phase where the role of charge and boundary conditions are
interchanged. Using a perturbative expansion of the ground state for the Z_3
model we are able to gain some insight in correlation functions. We argue that
they might be oscillating and give estimates for the oscillation length as well

Multi-particle structure in the Z_n-chiral Potts models
We calculate the lowest translationally invariant levels of the Z_3- and
Z_4-symmetrical chiral Potts quantum chains, using numerical diagonalization of
the hamiltonian for N <= 12 and N <= 10 sites, respectively, and extrapolating
N to infinity. In the high-temperature massive phase we find that the pattern
of the low-lying zero momentum levels can be explained assuming the existence
of n-1 particles carrying Z_n-charges Q = 1, ... , n-1 (mass m_Q), and their
scattering states. In the superintegrable case the masses of the n-1 particles
become proportional to their respective charges: m_Q = Q m_1. Exponential
convergence in N is observed for the single particle gaps, while power
convergence is seen for the scattering levels. We also verify that
qualitatively the same pattern appears for the self-dual and integrable cases.
For general Z_n we show that the energy-momentum relations of the particles
show a parity non-conservation asymmetry which for very high temperatures is
exclusive due to the presence of a macroscopic momentum P_m=(1-2Q/n)/\phi,
where \phi is the chiral angle and Q is the Z_n-charge of the respective

Minimal Unitary Models and The Closed SU(2)-q Invariant Spin Chain
We consider the Hamiltonian of the closed invariant chain. We
project a particular class of statistical models belonging to the unitary
minimal series. A particular model corresponds to a particular value of the
coupling constant. The operator content is derived. This class of models has
charge-dependent boundary conditions. In simple cases (Ising, 3-state Potts)
corresponding Hamiltonians are constructed. These are non-local as the original

Nonequilibrium Forces Between Neutral Atoms Mediated by a Quantum Field
We study all known and as yet unknown forces between two neutral atoms,
modeled as three dimensional harmonic oscillators, arising from mutual
influences mediated by an electromagnetic field but not from their direct
interactions. We allow as dynamical variables the center of mass motion of the
atom, its internal degrees of freedom and the quantum field treated
relativistically. We adopt the method of nonequilibrium quantum field theory
which can provide a first principle, systematic and unified description
including the intrinsic field fluctuations and induced dipole fluctuations. The
inclusion of self-consistent back-actions makes possible a fully dynamical
description of these forces valid for general atom motion. In thermal
equilibrium we recover the known forces -- London, van der Waals and
Casimir-Polder forces -- between neutral atoms in the long-time limit but also
discover the existence of two new types of interatomic forces. The first, a
`nonequilibrium force', arises when the field and atoms are not in thermal
equilibrium, and the second, which we call an `entanglement force', originates
from the correlations of the internal degrees of freedom of entangled atoms.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figure
Freire e leontiev : contribuições para o ensino de ciências
A abordagem histórico-cultural e a perspectiva educacional freireana cada vez mais têm balizado a pesquisa em Educação em Ciências, no Brasil. Neste trabalho investigamos as relações entre a Teoria da Atividade e as idéias de Paulo Freire. Para tal, realizamos um estudo teórico a partir de obras de Leontiev e Engeström em que identificamos possíveis articulações entre a motivação (Leontiev) e a problematização (Freire), em especial quanto ao planejamento em torno de uma situação problema a ser desenvolvida no contexto escolar. Além disso, a perspectiva freireana parece contribuir para determinar os elementos estruturadores necessários para modelar a dinâmica de constituição da atividade de Leontiev, em particular, a da atividade educacional
Projected pH reductions by 2100 might put deep North Atlantic biodiversity at risk
This study aims to evaluate the potential for impacts of ocean acidification on North Atlantic deep-sea ecosystems in response to IPCC AR5 Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs). Deep-sea biota is likely highly vulnerable to changes in seawater chemistry and sensitive to moderate excursions in pH. Here we show, from seven fully coupled Earth system models, that for three out of four RCPs over 17% of the seafloor area below 500 m depth in the North Atlantic sector will experience pH reductions exceeding ?0.2 units by 2100. Increased stratification in response to climate change partially alleviates the impact of ocean acidification on deep benthic environments. We report on major pH reductions over the deep North Atlantic seafloor (depth >500 m) and at important deep-sea features, such as seamounts and canyons. By 2100, and under the high CO2 scenario RCP8.5, pH reductions exceeding ?0.2 (?0.3) units are projected in close to 23% (~15%) of North Atlantic deep-sea canyons and ~8% (3%) of seamounts – including seamounts proposed as sites of marine protected areas. The spatial pattern of impacts reflects the depth of the pH perturbation and does not scale linearly with atmospheric CO2 concentration. Impacts may cause negative changes of the same magnitude or exceeding the current target of 10% of preservation of marine biomes set by the convention on biological diversity, implying that ocean acidification may offset benefits from conservation/management strategies relying on the regulation of resource exploitation
Time resolved emission spectroscopy of poly(2,5-dicyano-p-phenylene-vinylene) films
Films of poly (2,5-dicyano-p-phenylene vinylene), DCNPPV, were obtained by electrochemical synthesis over gold thin layer (20 nm) transparent electrode deposited on a glass plate. The DCNPPV films of 4 µm thickness were produced by electropolymerization process of α,α,α',α'-tetrabromo-2-5-dicyano-p-xilene at different applied potentials (-0.15, -0.25, -0.40, -0.60, -0.80, and -1.0 V) using 0.1 mol L-1 of tetraethylammonium bromide in acetonitrile as the supporting electrolyte. The emission decays have three exponential components: a fast component in the picosecond range (200-400 ps), and two other of about one and five nanoseconds at 293 K. The fluorescence quenching process seems to occur by exciton trapping in a low-energy site and quenching by residual bromine monomer attached at the end of the polymer chain. However, the electrochemical synthesis generates entrapped bromide or ion pairs during the growth step of the film which also contributes to the deactivation. The change of the electrolyte from bromide to perchlorate reduces significantly this additional quenching effect by allowing ion exchange of formed bromide with the nonquenching perchloride anion.Filmes finos de poli(2,5-diciano-p-fenileno vinileno), DCNPPV, foram produzidos por síntese eletroquímica com variação do potencial aplicado de-0,15 até-1,0 V, e depositados sobre camada fina de ouro sobre vidro. A cinética de estado excitado destes materiais foi investigada por medidas de decaimentos de fluorescência. Os filmes apresentam decaimentos com três componentes, uma rápida da ordem de 200-400 picossegundos, e outra duas componentes de aproximadamente um e cinco nanossegundos, na temperatura de 293 K. O decaimento de fluorescência ocorre pela desativação em sítios de baixa energia na cadeia polimérica conjugada e por supressão do estado excitado por monômeros bromados terminais da cadeia e íons brometo aprisionados durante o crescimento eletroquímico do filme. A mudança do ânion do eletrólito suporte de brometo para perclorato reduziu de modo significativo essa contribuição de supressão do estado excitado como resultado da troca iônica por uma espécie não supressora.FAPESPCNP
Photodermatitis and ocular changes in nine horses after ingestion of wild parsnip (pastinaca sativa)
Background
Primary photosensitization rarely occurs in horses and can easily be misinterpreted. Descriptions of the disease in horses after ingestion of parsnip are lacking. The aim of this case series was to describe the dermatological and ocular changes due to photosensitization and to raise awareness of parsnip being a possible aetiologic agent.
Case presentation
Nine horses from three different stables in Berlin and Brandenburg, Germany, presented variable degrees of erythema, scaling, crusting and necrosis of unpigmented skin at the head and prepuce. Horses were of different breeds with a median age of 15 ± 5.9 years. A mild leukocytosis was diagnosed in 1/9 horses at admission. Analyzed liver enzymes were within the reference ranges in all horses. Ocular changes were diagnosed as follows: blepharitis (3/9), conjunctivitis (7/9), corneal edema without additional signs of keratitis and/or uveitis (2/9), corneal edema with signs of uveitis (1/9) and photophobia (4/9). One horse developed a fluorescein positive corneal erosion. Skin biopsy (1/9) revealed a moderate to severe acute, eosinophilic and lymphocytic dermatitis with dermal edema and vasculitis. All stables housing these patients fed hay from the same distributer. Analyzed hay samples showed high contents of wild parsnip (plants, seeds, roots). Wild parsnip is widespread in Europe and contains furocoumarins, a family of photodynamic pigments, which may cause primary photodermatitis, keratoconjunctivitis and uveitis. Horses were treated according to severity of clinical symptoms systemically with flunixine meglumine (1.1 mg/kg BW 1-2x/day) or prednisolone (1 mg/kg BW 1x/day). Topically, either gentamicin (3x/day), dexamethasone (2-3x/day) and/or atropine (1x/day) were used. Skin care was provided with almond oil or dexpanthenol (2x/day). All horses were kept in a dark environment or were treated with sunscreen and facemasks. Duration of treatment varied from 6–30 days (median 11.3 days).
Conclusion
Ingestion of wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) can induce primary photosensitization with dermatitis and ocular injury in horses. In times of extreme weather, hay may alter in botanical composition, resulting in high amounts of uncharacteristic plants causing novel problems
Ashkin-Teller universality in a quantum double model of Ising anyons
We study a quantum double model whose degrees of freedom are Ising anyons.
The terms of the Hamiltonian of this system give rise to a competition between
single and double topologies. By studying the energy spectra of the Hamiltonian
at different values of the coupling constants, we find extended gapless regions
which include a large number of critical points described by conformal field
theories with central charge c=1. These theories are part of the Z_2 orbifold
of the bosonic theory compactified on a circle. We observe that the Hilbert
space of our anyonic model can be associated with extended Dynkin diagrams of
affine Lie algebras which yields exact solutions at some critical points. In
certain special regimes, our model corresponds to the Hamiltonian limit of the
Ashkin-Teller model, and hence integrability over a wide range of coupling
