Looted Art and Restitution in the Twentieth Century ā Towards a Global Perspective
Introducing the Journal of Contemporary History Special Issue āThe Restitution of Looted Art in the 20th Centuryā, this article proposes a framework for writing the history of looting and restitution in transnational and global perspective. By comparing and contextualizing instances of looting and restitution in different geographical and temporal contexts, it aims to overcome existing historiographical fragmentations and move past the overwhelming focus on the specificities of Nazi looting through an extended timeframe that inserts the Second World War into a longer perspective from the nineteenth century up to present day restitution practices. Particular emphasis is put on the interlinked histories of denazification and decolonization. Problematizing existing analytical, chronological and geographical frameworks, the article suggests how a combination of comparative, entangled and global history approaches can open up promising new avenues of research. It draws out similarities, differences and connections between processes of looting and restitution in order to discuss the extent to which looting and restitution were shaped by ā and shaped ā changing global networks. This Special Issue originated from the international conference āLooted Art and Restitution in the Twentieth Century: Europe in transnational and global perspectiveā morganized at Cambridge on 18ā20 September 2014 thanks to the generous support of Newnham College, Cambridge, the Trevelyan Fund (Faculty of History, Cambridge) and the Journal of Contemporary History
UVB radiation induced effects on cells studied by FTIR spectroscopy
We have made a preliminary analysis of the results about the eVects on
tumoral cell line (lymphoid T cell line Jurkat) induced by UVB radiation (dose
of 310 mJ/cm^2) with and without a vegetable mixture. In the present study, we
have used two techniques: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and
flow cytometry. FTIR spectroscopy has the potential to provide the
identiWcation of the vibrational modes of some of the major compounds (lipid,
proteins and nucleic acids) without being invasive in the biomaterials. The
second technique has allowed us to perform measurements of cytotoxicity and to
assess the percentage of apoptosis. We already studied the induction of
apoptotic process in the same cell line by UVB radiation; in particular, we
looked for correspondences and correlations between FTIR spetroscopy and flow
cytometry data finding three highly probable spectroscopic markers of apoptosis
(Pozzi et al. in Radiat Res 168:698-705, 2007). In the present work, the
results have shown significant changes in the absorbance and spectral pattern
in the wavenumber protein and nucleic acids regions after the treatments

A new modelling approach of evaluating preventive and reactive strategies for mitigating supply chain risks
Supply chains are becoming more complex and vulnerable due to globalization and interdependency between different risks. Existing studies have focused on identifying different preventive and reactive strategies for mitigating supply chain risks and advocating the need for adopting specific strategy under a particular situation. However, current research has not addressed the issue of evaluating an optimal mix of preventive and reactive strategies taking into account their relative costs and benefits within the supply network setting of interconnected firms and organizations. We propose a new modelling approach of evaluating different combinations of such strategies using Bayesian belief networks. This technique helps in determining an optimal solution on the basis of maximum improvement in the network expected loss. We have demonstrated our approach through a simulation study and discussed practical and managerial implications
NĆveis de hemoglobina, aleitamento materno e regime alimentar no primeiro ano de vida
OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between hemoglobin concentration and breastfeeding and complementary feeding during the first years of life. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with 553 children under age 12 months, who attended public healthcare facilities. Hemoglobin concentration was measured by the cyanmethaemoglobin method, using the HemoCue system. Associations of interest were analyzed through multiple linear regression. RESULTS: Hemoglobin concentrations compatible with anemia were identified in 62.8% of the children studied, with greater occurrence among the 6-12 months age group (72.6%). Exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life was associated with the highest levels of hemoglobin. The remaining feeding regimes were associated with different levels of reduction in hemoglobin levels, which became compatible with anemia in children fed with formula (p=0,009). Tea and/or water consumption was associated with a reduction in hemoglobin concentration of 0.76 g/dl (pOBJETIVO: Identificar a relaĆ§Ć£o entre os nĆveis de hemoglobina e o consumo de leite materno, alimentos complementares e lĆquidos nĆ£o nutritivos no primeiro ano de vida. X-ray Observations of the New Pulsar--Supernova Remnant System PSR J1119-6127 and SNR G292.2-0.5
PSR J1119-6127 is a recently discovered 1700-year-old radio pulsar that has a
very high inferred surface dipolar magnetic field. We present a detailed
analysis of a pointed ASCA observation and archival ROSAT data of J1119-6127
and its surroundings. Both data sets reveal extended emission coincident with
the newly-discovered radio supernova remnant G292.2-0.5, reported in a
companion paper by Crawford et al. (astro-ph/0012287).. A hard point source,
offset ~1.5' from the position of the radio pulsar, is seen with the ASCA GIS.
No pulsations are detected at the radio period with a pulsed fraction upper
limit of 61% (95% confidence). The limited statistics prevent a detailed
spectral analysis, although a power-law model with photon index (Gamma=~1-2)
describes the data well. Both the spectral model and derived X-ray luminosity
are consistent with those measured for other young radio pulsars, although the
spatial offset renders an identification of the source as the X-ray counterpart
of the pulsar uncertain.Comment: Accepted by ApJ; 12 Pages in emulated ApJ format with embedded tables

The post-transcriptional trans-acting regulator, TbZFP3, co-ordinates transmission-stage enriched mRNAs in Trypanosoma brucei
Post-transcriptional gene regulation is essential to eukaryotic development. This is particularly emphasized in trypanosome parasites where genes are co-transcribed in polycistronic arrays but not necessarily co-regulated. The small CCCH protein, TbZFP3, has been identified as a trans-acting post-transcriptional regulator of Procyclin surface antigen expression in Trypanosoma brucei. To investigate the wider role of TbZFP3 in parasite transmission, a global analysis of associating transcripts was carried out. Examination of a subset of the selected transcripts revealed their increased abundance through mRNA stabilization upon TbZFP3 ectopic overexpression, dependent upon the integrity of the CCCH zinc finger domain. Reporter assays demonstrated that this regulation was mediated through 3ā²-UTR sequences for two target transcripts. Global developmental expression profiling of the cohort of TbZFP3-selected transcripts revealed their significant enrichment in transmissible stumpy forms of the parasite. This analysis of the specific mRNAs selected by the TbZFP3mRNP provides evidence for a developmental regulon with the potential to co-ordinate genes important in parasite transmission
The steady-state transcriptome of the four major life-cycle stages of Trypanosoma cruzi
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Chronic chagasic cardiomyopathy is a debilitating and frequently fatal outcome of human infection with the protozoan parasite, <it>Trypanosoma cruzi</it>. Microarray analysis of gene expression during the <it>T. cruzi </it>life-cycle could be a valuable means of identifying drug and vaccine targets based on their appropriate expression patterns, but results from previous microarray studies in <it>T. cruzi </it>and related kinetoplastid parasites have suggested that the transcript abundances of most genes in these organisms do not vary significantly between life-cycle stages.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this study, we used whole genome, oligonucleotide microarrays to globally determine the extent to which <it>T. cruzi </it>regulates mRNA relative abundances over the course of its complete life-cycle. In contrast to previous microarray studies in kinetoplastids, we observed that relative transcript abundances for over 50% of the genes detected on the <it>T. cruzi </it>microarrays were significantly regulated during the <it>T. cruzi </it>life-cycle. The significant regulation of 25 of these genes was confirmed by quantitative reverse-transcriptase PCR (qRT-PCR). The <it>T. cruzi </it>transcriptome also mirrored published protein expression data for several functional groups. Among the differentially regulated genes were members of paralog clusters, nearly 10% of which showed divergent expression patterns between cluster members.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Taken together, these data support the conclusion that transcript abundance is an important level of gene expression regulation in <it>T. cruzi</it>. Thus, microarray analysis is a valuable screening tool for identifying stage-regulated <it>T. cruzi </it>genes and metabolic pathways.</p
