Beef Cattle Producers of the Texas Gulf Coast: Characteristics and Production Practices

    Get PDF
Agricultural production in Texas and the nation has been characterized by two major trends: farms are getting larger in size and fewer in number, and more farmers are seeking off-farm employment. For those who remain in farming, technology is becoming more complex, the industry is becoming more highly structured, and the market for their agricultural products is being affected by international events. Today\u27s farmers must have strong managerial skills and be aware of modern agricultural technologies if they are to succeed. The purpose here is to identify and measure characteristics of ranchers and related activities as organizational units; and to determine herd, pasture, and forage management practices followed by producers. Also examined is the relationship between agricultural technology utilization and selected personal and farm characteristics. Data are derived from a proportionate random sample of beef cattle producers in the gulf coast region of Texas. The sampling was designed to provide an accurate picture of the 10,000 organizational units of the gulf coast region and each county in the region with percent responses ranging no more than - +7% with a 95% confidence interval

AREA FRAME POINT SAMPLING: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY TO MEASURE NICARAGUA AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION

The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) of the United States Department of Agriculture was requested to assist the Government of Nicaragua in developing an intensive and statistically sound crop and livestock estimating program. The collaboration of work was with the Ministry of Agriculture, Central Bank of Nicaragua, United Nations Development Program, and the United States Agency for International Development. This report describes area frame point sampling and its advantages and disadvantages as applied to Nicaragua. Area frame point sampling is one method of area frame sampling. In this method, random points are selected within the boundaries of each stratum. The enumerator determines who operates the land where the point falls, then interviews the operator to determine the agricultural activity on that entire farming operation. Since this method does not rely on physical features to define the sampling unit, it is especially applicable in areas lacking permanent physical boundaries. The frame is easily constructed and sampled. These were major factors for selecting this design for the Nicaraguan project. The point-based area survey which combine's probability proportional to size sampling and broad application of sampling frame techniques has proven useful in improving the statistical procedures used in Nicaragua. Plans are to conduct agricultural surveys on a semiannual basis (fall and spring) to provide a measure of basic grain production for an entire crop year and inventory of livestock

The expansion of livestock production throughout the world has led to increased demand for high protein animal feed. This expansion has created economic benefits for livestock farmers and other actors in the chain, but also resulted in environmental and social side effects. This study aims to identify a set of sustainability issues that cover the environmental, economic and social dimensions of soymeal and beef production chains. The method applied combines the results of multiple studies, including a literature review and stakeholder surveys. Stakeholder surveys were conducted for three different interest groups (business, consumers, and other stakeholders) and two geographical regions (Latin America and the European Union). Our results reveal that the selection of issues in most sustainability assessment studies is a relatively arbitrary decision, while the literature also states that identifying issues is an important step in a sustainability assessment. Defining sustainability issues from a whole chain perspective is important, as issues of sustainability emerge at various stages along the production chain, and are found to vary across stakeholders' interests. Business stakeholders, for example, perceived economic issues to be more important, whereas the majority of consumer stakeholders and other stakeholders perceived social and environmental issues, respectively, to be more important. Different education levels, knowledge, and living patterns in various geographical regions can affect the stakeholders' perceptions. The combination of a heterogeneous group of stakeholders and the consideration of multiple chain stages constitutes a useful approach to identify sustainability issues along food chains

Mobile Applications Dedicated for Cardiac Patients: Research of Available Resources

In recent years cardiac problems and using mobile devices for aiding people with these problems have received significant attention from the scientific communities to develop solutions to improve the quality of life. The proliferation of mobile computing technologies has revolutionized the medical practices in both patient and clinical staff sides. In particular, the development of mobile health applications continues to increase; mainly, the cardiology field is the most addressed. This paper focuses on the review of the mobile applications available in the Google Play Store that are dedicated to cardiac patients. The number of cardiac patients is increasing, but there are no mobile applications that aid cardiac patients by providing monitoring of different parameters, including the calorie intake and the calories burned. However, the mobile applications that can be adapted to this type of people were analyzed. We found six notable mobile applications. Their features can be grouped in diet, anthropometric parameters, and physical activity
