Evolutionary genomics of the recently duplicated amphioxus Hairy genes
Amphioxus Hairy genes have gone through a number of lineage-specific duplications, resulting in eight members, some of which are differentially expressed in the embryo. In order to gain insights into the evolution and function of this gene family we have compared their genomic structure and searched for conserved non-coding sequence elements. We have found that introns have been lost independently from these genes at least twice and after the duplication events. By carrying out phylogenetic footprinting between paralogues expressed in the embryo, we have found a differential distribution of conserved elements that could explain the limited overlap in expression patterns of Hairy genes in the amphioxus embryo. Furthermore, clustering of RBP-Jk binding sites in these conserved elements suggests that amphioxus Hairy genes are downstream targets of the Notch signaling pathway, as occurs in vertebrates. All of this evidence suggests that amphioxus Hairy genes have gone through a process of subfunctionalization shortly after their duplication, representing an extreme and rapid case of the duplication-degeneration-complementation model
A regulatory motif in nonmuscle myosin II-B regulates its role in migratory front-back polarity
In this study, we show that the role of nonmuscle myosin
II (NMII)-B in front–back migratory cell polarity is
controlled by a short stretch of amino acids containing
five serines (1935–1941). This motif resides near the
junction between the C terminus helical and nonhelical
tail domains. Removal of this motif inhibited NMII-B assembly,
whereas its insertion into NMII-A endowed an
NMII-B–like ability to generate large actomyosin bundles
that determine the rear of the cell. Phosphomimetic
mutation of the five serines also inhibited NMII-B assembly,
rendering it unable to support front–back polarization.
Mass spectrometric analysis showed that several of
these serines are phosphorylated in live cells. Single-site
mutagenesis showed that serine 1935 is a major regulatory
site of NMII-B function. These data reveal a novel regulatory
mechanism of NMII in polarized migrating cells
by identifying a key molecular determinant that confers

Histological Study of Leaf Galls Induced by Phylloxera in Vitis (Vitaceae) Leaves
[EN] The galls induced by hemipterans generally show hypertrophy of the phloem; these insects usually feed on the sap in the sieve tube elements, occasioning phloem bundle hypertrophy. However, there are some exceptions; for example, the phylloxerids feed on the gall wall parenchyma. It has remained unknown, however, whether Daktulosphaira vitifoliae (the vine phylloxera) also causes hypertrophy of the phloem bundles. The galls induced by D. vitifoliae in leaves of the rootstock variety Richter-110 (Vitis berlandieri × Vitis rupestris) were examined microscopically. D. vitifoliae was found capable of inducing vascular bundle hypertrophy, as well as the nutritional enrichment of the gall wall parenchyma cells upon which the insect feeds. The hypertrophy of the phloem bundles commonly seen in hemipteran-induced leaf galls also occurs in those induced by D. vitifoliae, even though these do not feed on the phloem contents, but rather on the gall wall parenchyma. The appearance of phloem bundle hypertrophy in hemipteran-induced leaf galls requires the remobilization of photoassimilates that might affect the productivity of the affected plantS
[EN] A team of architects and experts from Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain
has characterized and documented a couple of archaeological sites of Byzantine origin in Syria, settled along the river Euphrates, known as the cities of Tall
as-Sinn and Halabiye. The text figures out the surveys carried out from 2005 to
2010, the objectives and the methodology used and some results achieved during the years in spite of the recent civil war.Mileto, C.; Vegas López-Manzanares, F.; Cristini, V.; Garcia Saez, S. (2018).
Vegas López-Manzanares, F.; Mileto, C.; García Soriano, L.; Garcia Saez, S.
