The Walking Dramaturg: An Autoethnographic Methodology for Performance Documentation

    Get PDF
Technology usually implies the distancing of the human experience, but I argue what technology has enabled can teach us something about the role of multiplicity and the rhizomatic nature of history and storytelling. By looking at the subject position of the practicing performance researcher in terms of the walking dramaturg, the autoethnographic catalogue of such experience becomes a form of documentation in the archive of theatre histories. Taking the time to explore a nuanced understanding of the documeter’s subject position acknowledges the multifarious subject positions that contribute to the archive of theatre histories. Beyond creating a record of evidence, I build on Ledger, Ellis and Wright\u27s (2010, p. 181) argument that “documentation is an implicit part of practice as research” (p. 181). I suggest it is in the act of walking that documentation becomes a verb—it becomes a form of artistic practice that fully considers the space and time in which the self as an artifact is considered

Caught between Empires: Pre-Famine Irish Immigrants in Santiago de Cuba, 1665-1847

This thesis examines the complex experiences of Irish immigrants in city and province of Santiago de Cuba. For some pre-Famine Irish immigrants, Cuba was an island of opportunities, and these often lay in the burgeoning sugar and coffee industries, industries that were dependant of enslaved labour and the slave-trade. Santiago de Cuba, a small city of almost no relevance to the Spanish American empire, appears as an unlikely destination for Irish migrants, but, although they were only a handful of families, their contribution is significant and under-explored. The present work examines those Irish families who settled permanently in Santiago from the 17th century until the eve of the Irish Great Famine in 1845. They are composed of two distinctive groups of Irish immigrants. The first one arrived from Spain throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. They developed a sense of symbolic Irish identity, expressed through naming practices, and had a hand in creating the élite cohort into which the immigrants of the second group inserted themselves in the early decades of the 19th century. The first group employed strategies to achieve social mobility and to maintain some degree of ethnic cohesion. They saw in marital alliances as a highly strategic practice that placed them into the local élite and into key colonial institutions in order to assimilate and integrate into their host society. By contrast, the second group was composed of a wider cohort of clearly transnational and trans-imperial adventurers. They sojourned in the United States, towards which market they focused their enterprises by creating trading firms and investing in coffee cultivation. They exploited the interstices of the Spanish and British empires, and of the United States’ “informal one”, to become some of the wealthiest planters and merchants in eastern Cuba. By 1827 these groups had merged into one élite that was politically and socially conservative, and religiously Catholic. They were fiercely pro-slavery and fervent supporters of the maintenance of the Spanish colonial status quo. The arguments made in this work are sustained in primary sources such as letters, genealogical data, parish records, business letters, and diplomat’s dispatches, among others. These sources were found in archival collections in Cuba, Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Spain

Pronunciation improvement: stress conventions for Hispanic TEFL students

Colombian English teachers and university students from TEFL Bachelor’s degree programs are required by the Ministry of Education of Colombia (MEN) to improve and develop bilingual skills. However, bilingual skills not only rely on grammar and vocabulary, but also on good pronunciation and listening comprehension skills, which facilitates good communication skills in English. One of the major problems experienced by many adult, native Spanish speakers is the existence of erroneous stress placement in most English words and sentences when reading out loud or speaking in English. This has the potential to confuse English speakers, and as a consequence, this monograph intends to explain why learning and applying stress conventions is essential for adult and Hispanic English learners, and present in the appendices of this work some basic principles and conventions for improving some areas of English pronunciation. This is intended to make communication more intelligible and comprehensible for the audiences of these learners. Adult learners have advantages over children, and these stress conventions can be learned and memorized easily by a motivated adult learner and TEFL student. This will allow them to easily apply the conventions in readings and regular conversations when practicing with a teacher in the classroom and other contexts. In this way, even though there are exceptions to the rules, motivation in adult English learners increases, as well as confidence when participating in advanced English courses, like English conversation

A high level commitment should be shown as a significant share of allocated and spent resources on measures that aim to promote the right to adequate food. Therefore, the analysis of the public budget and the application of process indicators suggested by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) provide us to assess the implementation of specific policy instruments, to detect discriminatory implementation of actions and programs designed to guarantee Food Security and Nutrition (FSN) and to examine whether the budget allocations and expenditure are consistent with the progressive assurance of the Human Right to Adequate Food (HRAF). Based on this methodology and indicators, the bear point was to analyze the budget of public programs involved in ensuring FSN at Federal District. The analytical character of this study, with quantitative and qualitative approach, identified and analyzed the resources allocated and spent for the Thematic Programmes (TP): family farming and the purchase of its production through institutional market, school feeding, conditional cash transfer programs, public equipment network for food and nutrition security and other important actions for the FSN at Federal District along the period from 2011 to 2014. To achieve a collective analysis, were performed hermeneutic focus groups with participation of members of the Food and Nutrition Security Council of Federal District (Consea/ DF) to discuss the budget indicators and to produce the discursive narrative, with subsequent validation. The analysis of indicators historical series allowed us to verify FNS authorized public budget had a downward trend, still the proportion of budget really spent has increased, between 2011 and 2014. Regarding public FNS budget proportion in comparison with global budget, still is a small and insignificant amount, close to 1,28% of all budget addressed to district unit and 0,13% of gross product. In relation to qualitative dimension of the study, the narratives presents the existence of a consensus about the importance of monitoring budget indicators and proceed with the budgetary evaluation of the public policy. Even though, there are some obstacles to overcome in order to ensure in practice the social participation dimension. Such as counselor’s engagement and co-responsibility for monitoring programs and council operation; strength the Council’s presidency; improvements on the participation of the counselors in specific spaces design to ensure experiences and tools exchange; and the reactivation of working groups involved in monitoring public policy also The District Plan. This reflection and debate exercise is, by itself, and effort to initiate the process for a better dialogue between civil society and government. This research is expected to had contributed to the debate concerning to supervise's need and to evaluate the public budget programs headed for the progressive assurance of the right to food. Thereby, the civil society and public managers could be able to take a transparent dialogue about allocation and use of public resources, the cost-effectiveness of policies and public programs and decision-making in order to promote the social control
