    Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Cosmology from combined galaxy clustering and lensing validation on cosmological simulations

    Artículo escrito por un elevado número de autores, solo se referencian el que aparece en primer lugar, el nombre del grupo de colaboración, si le hubiere, y los autores pertenecientes a la UAMWe present a validation of the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 (DES Y3) 3 × 2-point analysis choices by testing them on Buzzard2.0, a new suite of cosmological simulations that is tailored for the testing and validation of combined galaxy clustering and weak-lensing analyses. We show that the buzzard2.0 simulations accurately reproduce many important aspects of the DES Y3 data, including photometric redshift and magnitude distributions, and the relevant set of two-point clustering and weak-lensing statistics. We then show that our model for the 3 × 2-point data vector is accurate enough to recover the true cosmology in simulated surveys assuming the true redshift distributions for our source and lens samples, demonstrating robustness to uncertainties in the modeling of the nonlinear matter power spectrum, nonlinear galaxy bias, and higher-order lensing corrections. Additionally, we demonstrate for the first time that our photometric redshift calibration methodology, including information from photometry, spectroscopy, clustering cross-correlations, and galaxy-galaxy lensing ratios, is accurate enough to recover the true cosmology in simulated surveys in the presence of realistic photometric redshift uncertaintie

    Microstructural and magnetic characterization of Fe- and Ir-based multilayers

    Nominal [Fe(t)/Ir(t′)]n (M/M type), [FeOx(t)/IrOx(t′)]n (O/O), and [Fe(t)/IrOx(t′)]n (M/O) multilayers have been prepared by magnetron sputtering at room temperature. Composition, structure, and magnetic behavior have been analyzed. In the M/M samples, the Fe and Ir phases are identified as bcc and fcc, respectively. The magnetism evolves from bulklike iron to granular behavior as the thickness of the Fe layers decreases. An induced magnetic moment, ferromagnetically coupled to Fe, is observed on Ir by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Besides, the presence of negative remanent magnetization is observed in the M/M samples. As for the M/O samples, the stronger affinity of iron for oxygen displaces the oxygen atoms giving rise to actual heterostructures that strongly differ from the nominal ones. For similar thickness of the two layers the Fe layer become oxidized while a mixture of metal and oxide phases is found in the Ir layer. The increase of the Fe thickness leads to a metallic Ir layer and a highly coercive (∼4.4 kOe) core-shell metal-oxide structure in the Fe layers.Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO), MAT2014-54425-R, MAT2017-83468-RAragón DGA NETOSHIM

    Chronic renal disease in Spain: Prevalence and related factors in persons with diabetes mellitus older than 64 years

    Introducción La diabetes mellitus tipo 2 y la enfermedad renal crónica (ERC) son afecciones de elevada prevalencia en personas = 65 años y constituyen un importante problema de salud pública. Objetivos Conocer la prevalencia de la ERC, sus categorías y su relación con diversos factores demográficos y clínicos, en pacientes ancianos con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 en España. Métodos Estudio epidemiológico, observacional, transversal, multicéntrico, ámbito nacional. Se incluyeron pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 conocida, edad = 65 años atendidos en Atención Primaria. Se recogieron variables demográficas, antropométricas y analíticas de los últimos 12 meses, incluyendo el cociente albúmina-creatinina y el filtrado glomerular estimado para evaluar la función renal. Resultados La prevalencia de ERC fue del 37, 2% (IC95%, 34, 1-40, 3%), de insuficiencia renal del 29, 7% (IC95%, 26, 8-32, 6%) y de elevación de la albuminuria del 20, 6% (IC95%, 17, 3-23, 9%), moderadamente elevada 17, 8% (IC95%, 14, 7-20, 9%), severamente elevada 2, 8% (IC95%, 1, 4-4, 2%). La prevalencia de las categorías de ERC fueron: G1 1, 3% (IC95%, 0, 6-2%), G2 6, 2% (IC95%, 4, 6-7, 8%), G3a 17, 2% (IC95%, 14, 8-19, 6%), G3b 9, 8% (IC95%, 7, 9-11, 7%), G4 2% (IC95%, 1, 1-2, 9%) y G5 0, 7% (IC95%, 0, 2-1, 2%). En el análisis multivariante, después de ajustar por el resto de variables, la ERC se asoció a mayor edad OR 5, 13, (IC95%, 3, 15-8, 35), alta comorbilidad OR 3, 36 (IC95%, 2, 2-5, 12) y la presencia de tratamiento antihipertensivo OR 2, 43 (IC95%, 1, 48-4, 02). Conclusiones La ERC es frecuente en la población diabética = 65 años y se asocia con mayor edad, alta comorbilidad e hipertensión tratada. No se ha encontrado asociación con el género y años de evolución de la diabetes. Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are conditions which have a high prevalence in individuals =65 years of age and represent a major public health problem. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of CKD, its categories and its relationship with various demographic and clinical factors in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Spain. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional, multicenter, Spanish epidemiological study. Patients with known type 2 diabetes mellitus, age =65 years of age treated in Primary Care were included. We collected demographic, anthropometric and analytical variables from the previous 12 months, including the albumin-to-creatinine ratio and estimated glomerular filtration rate to evaluate renal function. Results: The prevalence of CKD was 37.2% (95% CI, 34.1–40.3%), renal failure was 29.7% (95% CI, 26.8–32.6%) and increased albuminuria was 20.6% (95% CI, 17.3–23.9%), moderately increased albuminuria was 17.8% (95% CI, 14.7–20.9%) and severely increased albuminuria was 2.8% (95% CI, 1.4–4.2%). In turn, the prevalence of CKD categories were: G1 1.3% (95% CI, 0.6–2%), G2 6.2% (95% CI, 4.6–7.8%), G3a 17.2% (95% CI, 14.8–19.6%), G3b 9.8% (95% CI, 7.9–11.7%), G4 2% (95% CI, 1.1–2.9%) and G5 0.7% (95% CI, 0.2–1.2%). In the multivariate analysis, after adjusting for the remaining variables, CKD was associated with elderly age (OR 5.13, 95% CI, 3.15–8.35), high comorbidity (OR 3.36, 95% CI, 2.2–5.12) and presence of antihypertensive treatment (OR 2.43, 95% CI, 1.48–4.02). Conclusions: CKD is frequent in the diabetic population =65 years of age and is associated with elderly age, high comorbidity and with treated hypertension. No relationship has been found with gender and time in years since onset of diabetes

    Pomegranate Extract Improves Maximal Performance of Trained Cyclists after an Exhausting Endurance Trial: A Randomised Controlled Trial

    The efficacy of pomegranate (Punica granatum) extract (PE) for improving performance and post-exercise recovery in an active population was equivocal in previous studies. In this study, a randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, balanced, cross-over trial with two arms was conducted. Eligibility criteria for participants were as follows: male, amateur cyclist, with a training routine of 2 to 4 sessions per week (at least one hour per session). The cyclists (n = 26) were divided into treatment (PE) and placebo (PLA) groups for a period of 15 days. After physical tests, the groups were exchanged after a 14-day washout period. Exercise tests consisted of endurance bouts (square-wave endurance exercise test followed by an incremental exercise test to exhaustion) and an eccentric exercise drill. The objective was to assess the efficacy of PE in performance outcomes and post-exercise muscular recovery and force restoration after a prolonged submaximal effort. Twenty-six participants were included for statistical analysis. There was a statistically significant difference in total time to exhaustion (TTE)(17.66–170.94 s, p < 0.02) and the time to reach ventilatory threshold 2 (VT2)(26.98–82.55 s, p < 0.001), with greater values for the PE compared to the PLA group. No significant results were obtained for force restoration in the isokinetic unilateral low limb test. PE, after a prolonged submaximal effort, may be effective in improving performance outcomes at maximal effort and might help to restore force in the damaged muscles.Actividad Física y Deport

    A new non-aggregative splicing isoform of human Tau is decreased in Alzheimer's disease.

    Tauopathies, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration with Tau pathology (FTLD-tau), are a group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by Tau hyperphosphorylation. Post-translational modifications of Tau such as phosphorylation and truncation have been demonstrated to be an essential step in the molecular pathogenesis of these tauopathies. In this work, we demonstrate the existence of a new, human-specific truncated form of Tau generated by intron 12 retention in human neuroblastoma cells and, to a higher extent, in human RNA brain samples, using qPCR and further confirming the results on a larger database of human RNA-seq samples. Diminished protein levels of this new Tau isoform are found by Westernblotting in Alzheimer's patients' brains (Braak I n = 3; Braak II n = 6, Braak III n = 3, Braak IV n = 1, and Braak V n = 10, Braak VI n = 8) with respect to non-demented control subjects (n = 9), suggesting that the lack of this truncated isoform may play an important role in the pathology. This new Tau isoform exhibits similar post-transcriptional modifications by phosphorylation and affinity for microtubule binding, but more interestingly, is less prone to aggregate than other Tau isoforms. Finally, we present evidence suggesting this new Tau isoform could be linked to the inhibition of GSK3β, which would mediate intron 12 retention by modulating the serine/arginine rich splicing factor 2 (SRSF2). Our results show the existence of an important new isoform of Tau and suggest that further research on this less aggregation-prone Tau may help to develop future therapies for Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies.This work was supported by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades from Spain (PGC2018-096177-B-00).
