    A study of residual stresses and their effect on thermo mechanical fatigue in complex geometries

    It is known that residual stresses within engine components, such as turbine housings, can combine with service generated stresses and cause unexpected failures during operation, therefore it is important that all the stresses (residual and induced, compressive and tensile) are fully characterised and understood. The use of neutrons as a tool to measure the strains within a material is well established; however, applying this technique to complex engineering components can prove challenging. This research investigates the measurement of residual stresses in complex geometries found within the turbine housing component of a turbocharger using neutron diffraction. The effect of various production methods on residual stress distributions is also explored. Successful strain measurements were taken using the Engin-X instrument at the ISIS spallation source from three turbine housings selected from various stages in the manufacturing process, allowing a study of the effect of heat treatment and machining on stress magnitudes and direction. The turbine housing consists of various sections greater than the maximum 60mm path length of the neutrons, therefore path lengths must be carefully chosen to achieve acceptable neutron count rates. Engin-X benefits from an automated experimental setup to make the selection of this limited path length easier on complex shapes. The turbine housings were mounted on to a positioning table allowing translation in X, Y, Z directions and also rotation in , . Each of the housings were scanned using laser scanners and this in conjunction with the virtual path length measurement software SScanSS allowed automated measurements of acceptable path lengths to be made. On this occasion measurements in one principal direction were measured and the correct measurement methodology established. Continuation of this work was then carried out on SALSA at the ILL reactor source. Measurements were made on turbine housings, one as cast and one heat treated. The internal divider wall of each turbine housing was examined as this is an area where crack initiation can occur. The results showed that, heat treatment can reduce compressive residual stresses. However, compressive stresses are thought to slow the onset of crack initiation and could be beneficial in the material, this will be investigated further in future work. It is hoped that this information will be used to improve production methods and result in improved simulation methodologies to allow accurate predictions of thermal fatigue and fracture locations to be established.     Impact of SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic and Strategies for Resumption of Activities During the Second Wave of the Pandemic : A Report From Eight Paediatric Hospitals From the ECHO Network

    The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome CoronaVirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic impacted the organization of paediatric hospitals. This study aimed to evaluate the preparedness for the pandemic among a European network of children's hospitals and to explore the strategies to restart health care services. A cross-sectional, web-based survey was distributed in May 2020 to the 13 children's tertiary care hospitals belonging to the European Children's Hospitals Organisation. Responses were obtained from eight hospitals (62%). Significant reductions were observed in accesses to the emergency departments (41.7%), outpatient visits (35.7%), intensive and non-intensive care unit inpatient admissions (16.4 and 13%, respectively) between February 1 and April 30, 2020 as compared with the same period of 2019. Overall, 93 children with SARS CoV-2 infection were admitted to inpatient wards. All the hospitals created SARS-CoV-2 preparedness plans for the diagnosis and management of infected patients. Routine activities were re-scheduled. Four hospitals shared their own staff with adult units, two designated bed spaces for adults and only one admitted adults to inpatient wards. The three main components for the resumption of clinical activities were testing, source control, and reorganization of spaces and flows. Telemedicine and telehealth services were used before the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic by three hospitals and by all the hospitals during it. Conclusion: The present study provides a perspective on preparedness to SARS-CoV-2 pandemic among eight large European children's hospitals, on the impact of the pandemic on the hospital activities and on the strategies adopted to restart clinical activities.Peer reviewe

    Spurring Maritime Innovation in Annapolis

University of Maryland, College Park.In 1987, the City of Annapolis created Maritime Zoning Regulations, delineating four zones along Annapolis’ waterfront: Maritime Conservation District, Mixed Maritime District, Maritime Industrial District, and Maritime Eastport. The districts are designed to provide incentives to the maritime industry, while offering flexibility to property owners who wish to implement higher-value uses that would add to the success of the district. With over 250 businesses and organizations related to boat servicing and supplies, boating instruction, brokerage, chartering, insurance, marinas, and other maritime needs, Annapolis remains a major center for recreational boaters along the East Coast. However, the recession of 2007-2009 caused the worst economic decline for Annapolis’ maritime industry since 1932. Maritime businesses continue to face rising land costs and rent, resulting in fewer new maritime businesses locating in the City. The Fall 2016 Community Planning Studio class was tasked with reviewing previous economic studies of Annapolis’ maritime industry and updating the studies’ recommendations with new approaches. Our Studio class examined ways to revitalize the City’s maritime industry, focusing especially on how innovation-driven economic development tools could be applied in Annapolis. The following report synthesizes our research and proposes several recommendations that the City may implement in the short-, medium-, and long-term.Anne Arundel County & Annapoli

    Addition of Docetaxel to First-line Long-term Hormone Therapy in Prostate Cancer (STAMPEDE) : Modelling to Estimate Long-term Survival, Quality-adjusted Survival, and Cost-effectiveness

    Background Results from large randomised controlled trials have shown that adding docetaxel to the standard of care (SOC) for men initiating hormone therapy for prostate cancer (PC) prolongs survival for those with metastatic disease and prolongs failure-free survival for those without. To date there has been no formal assessment of whether funding docetaxel in this setting represents an appropriate use of UK National Health Service (NHS) resources. Objective To assess whether administering docetaxel to men with PC starting long-term hormone therapy is cost-effective in a UK setting. Design, setting, and participants We modelled health outcomes and costs in the UK NHS using data collected within the STAMPEDE trial, which enrolled men with high-risk, locally advanced metastatic or recurrent PC starting first-line hormone therapy. Intervention SOC was hormone therapy for ≥2 yr and radiotherapy in some patients. Docetaxel (75 mg/m2) was administered alongside SOC for six three-weekly cycles. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis The model generated lifetime predictions of costs, changes in survival duration, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs). Results and limitations The model predicted that docetaxel would extend survival (discounted quality-adjusted survival) by 0.89 yr (0.51) for metastatic PC and 0.78 yr (0.39) for nonmetastatic PC, and would be cost-effective in metastatic PC (ICER £5514/QALY vs SOC) and nonmetastatic PC (higher QALYs, lower costs vs SOC). Docetaxel remained cost-effective in nonmetastatic PC when the assumption of no survival advantage was modelled. Conclusions Docetaxel is cost-effective among patients with nonmetastatic and metastatic PC in a UK setting. Clinicians should consider whether the evidence is now sufficiently compelling to support docetaxel use in patients with nonmetastatic PC, as the opportunity to offer docetaxel at hormone therapy initiation will be missed for some patients by the time more mature survival data are available.     Comparing Intra-Familial and Extra-Familial Child Sexual Abusers With Professionals Who Have Sexually Abused Children With Whom They Work

    The aim of this study is to establish whether professionals who have sexually molested children with whom they work present as a homogeneous group identifiable by their personal histories, offending patterns, and profiles as distinct from other child molesters (intra-familial and extra-familial offenders). Participants were matched on age and IQ. It was found that child molesters who were professionals (similar to extra-familial offenders generally) were likely to have sexually abused male, or both male and female, children and had abused more than 20 child victims. Professionals were also significantly more likely to have offended against post-pubescent children than were extra-familial or intra-familial offenders. In terms of psychological profiles, professionals, like extra-familial offenders, were found to have a significantly higher level of reported sexual pre-occupation and emotional over-identification with children compared with intra-familial offenders and a significantly lower level of distorted sexual attitudes about their victims compared with extra-familial offenders. These results are discussed in the context of assessment that might be used to assess risk in those working with children in a professional capacity

    This study has explored the relationship between the University of Alabama football games and 911 calls in the City of Tuscaloosa, Alabama from 2006-2012. The main research objective was to use variables defined by the magnitude of the football game to explain the spatio-temporal patterns of 911 calls relative to the game weekends. The study did show the spatio-temporal pattern of 911 calls and the variation of the requests for EMS services around the football game. Two different datasets, one provided by the Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue Service and the other by NorthStar EMS were utilized for the study. By use a of kernel density mapping the spatio-temporal pattern of 911 calls was geographically depicted as a view to the movement of a population to Bryant Denny Stadium and then it's dispersal following the game. A line graph was then utilized for a time line analysis of 911 call volume compared to the time of the football game. The line graphs define the pre-game spike in run volume, decrease to normal call volume during the game and then a post-game spike following the event. A chi square and chi square cross-tabulation was employed to evaluate the relationships between categorical variables. The outcomes of these statistical tests were not significant. To further evaluate the distribution of 911 calls across the City of Tuscaloosa, all 911 calls from the NorthStar EMS dataset were re-classed into four call natures and then were tested for their spatial distribution using Getis Ord G from ArcMap. Hot spot maps were then used to identify concentration of calls to the census tract. (Published By University of Alabama Libraries
