Near-Infrared Imaging of Early-Type Galaxies IV. The Physical Origins of the Fundamental Plane Scaling Relations
The physical origins of the Fundamental Plane (FP) scaling relations are
investigated for early-type galaxies observed at optical and near-infrared
wavelengths. The slope for the FP is shown to increase systematically with
wavelength from the U-band through the K-band. A distance-independent
construction of the observables is described which provides an accurate
measurement of the change in the FP slope between any pair of bandpasses. The
variation of the FP slope with wavelength is strong evidence of systematic
variations in stellar content along the elliptical galaxy sequence. The
intercept of the diagnostic relationship between log(D_K/D_V) and log(sigma_0)
shows no significant dependence on environment within the uncertainties of the
Galactic extinction corrections, demonstrating the universality of the stellar
populations contributions at the level of Delta(V-K)=0.03 mag to the zero-point
of the global scaling relations.
Several other constraints on the properties of early-type galaxies --- the
slope of the Mg_2-sigma_0 relation, the effects of stellar populations
gradients, and deviations of early-type galaxies from a dynamically homologous
family --- are included to construct an empirical, self-consistent model which
provides a complete picture of the underlying physical properties which are
varying along the early-type galaxy sequence. This empirical approach
demonstrates that there are significant systematic variations in both age and
metallicity along the elliptical galaxy sequence, and that a small, but
systematic, breaking of dynamical homology (or a similar, wavelength
independent effect) is required. Predictions for the evolution of the slope of

The 2016 Model of The Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine
Emergency medicine (EM) has a scientifically derived and commonly accepted description of the domain of its clinical practice. That document, âThe Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicineâ (EM Model), was developed through the collaboration of six organizations: the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM), the administrative organization for the project, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD), the Emergency Medicine Residents\u27 Association (EMRA), the Residency Review Committee for Emergency Medicine (RRC-EM), and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM). Development of the EM Model was based on an extensive practice analysis of the specialty. The practice analysis relied on both empiric data gathered from actual emergency department visits and several expert panels (1). The resulting product was first published in 2001, and has successfully served as the common source document for all EM organizations (2,3). One of its strengths is incorporating the reality that EM is a specialty driven by symptoms not diagnoses, requiring simultaneous therapeutic and diagnostic interventions
The stellar populations of early-type galaxies -- II. The effects of environment and mass
The degree of influence that environment and mass have on the stellar
populations of early-type galaxies is uncertain. In this paper we present the
results of a spectroscopic analysis of the stellar populations of early-type
galaxies aimed at addressing this question. The sample of galaxies is drawn
from four clusters, with =0.04, and their surrounding structure extending to
~10R_{vir}. We find that the distributions of the absorption-line strengths and
the stellar population parameters age, metallicity and alpha-element abundance
ratio do not differ significantly between the clusters and their outskirts, but
the tight correlations found between these quantities and velocity dispersion
within the clusters are weaker in their outskirts. All three stellar population
parameters of cluster galaxies are positively correlated with velocity
dispersion. Galaxies in clusters form a homogeneous class of objects that have
similar distributions of line-strengths and stellar population parameters, and
follow similar scaling relations regardless of cluster richness or morphology.
We estimate the intrinsic scatter of the Gaussian distribution of metallicities
to be 0.3 dex, while that of the alpha-element abundance ratio is 0.07 dex. The
e-folding time of the exponential distribution of galaxy ages is estimated to
be 900 Myr. The intrinsic scatters of the metallicity and alpha-element
abundance ratio distributions can almost entirely be accounted for by the
correlations with velocity dispersion and the intrinsic scatter about these
relations. This implies that a galaxies mass plays the major role in

Converging and Differential Brain Phospholipid Dysregulation in the Pathogenesis of Repetitive Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Alzheimerâs Disease
Repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) is a major epigenetic risk factor for Alzheimerâs disease (AD). The precise nature of how rmTBI leads to or precipitates AD pathology is currently unknown. Numerous neurological conditions have shown an important role for dysfunctional phospholipid metabolism as a driving factor for the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. However, the precise role in rmTBI and AD remains elusive. We hypothesized that a detailed phospholipid characterization would reveal profiles of response to injury in TBI that overlap with age-dependent changes in AD and thus provide insights into the TBI-AD relationship. We employed a lipidomic approach examining brain phospholipid profiles from mouse models of rmTBI and AD. Cortex and hippocampal tissue were collected at 24 h, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months post-rmTBI, and at ages representing âpreâ, âperiâ and âpostâ onset of amyloid pathology (i.e., 3, 9, 15 months-old). Total levels of phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), LysoPE, and phosphatidylinositol (PI), including their monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acid (FA) containing species were significantly increased at acute and/or chronic time points post-injury in both brain regions. However, levels of most phospholipid species in PS1/APP mice were nominal in the hippocampus, while in the cortex, levels were significantly decreased at ages post-onset of amyloid pathology. Sphingomyelin and LysoPC levels showed coincidental trends in our rmTBI and AD models within the hippocampus, an increase at acute and/or chronic time points examined. The ratio of arachidonic acid (omega-6 FA) to docosahexaenoic acid (omega-3 FA)-containing PE species was increased at early time points in the hippocampus of injured versus sham mice, and in PS1/APP mice there was a coincidental increase compared to wild type littermates at all time points. This study demonstrates some overlapping and diverse phospholipid profiles in rmTBI and AD models. Future studies are required to corroborate our findings in human post-mortem tissue. Investigation of secondary mechanisms triggered by aberrant downstream alterations in bioactive metabolites of these phospholipids, and their modulation at the appropriate time-windows of opportunity could help facilitate development of novel therapeutic strategies to ameliorate the neurodegenerative consequences of rmTBI or the potential triggering of AD pathogenesis by rmTBI

Desde a Antiguidade, papagaios, periquitos e afins (Psittacidae) fascinaram os europeus por seu vivo colorido e uma notĂĄvel capacidade de interação com seres humanos. A descoberta do Novo Mundo nada faria alĂ©m de acrescentar novos elementos ao trĂĄfico de animais exĂłticos hĂĄ muito estabelecido pelos europeus com a Ăfrica e o Oriente. Sem possuir grandes mamĂferos, a AmĂ©rica tropical participaria desse comĂ©rcio com o que tinha de mais atrativo, essencialmente felinos, primatas e aves - em particular os papagaios, os quais eram embarcados em bom nĂșmero. Contudo, a julgar pelos documentos do Brasil colĂŽnia, esses volĂĄteis podiam inspirar muito pouca simpatia, pois nenhum outro animal - exceto as formigas - foi tantas vezes mencionado como praga para a agricultura. AlĂ©m disso, alguns psitĂĄcidas mostravam-se tĂŁo loquazes que inspiravam a sĂ©ria desconfiança de serem animais demonĂacos ou possessos, pois sĂł trĂȘs classes de entidades - anjos, homens e demĂŽnios - possuĂam o dom da palavra. Nos dias de hoje, vĂĄrios representantes dos Psittacidae ainda constituem uma ameaça para a agricultura, enquanto os indivĂduos muito faladores continuam despertando a suspeita de estarem possuĂdos pelo demĂŽnio. Nesse sentido, a existĂȘncia de aves capazes de falar torna essa relação ainda mais complexa e evidencia que as dificuldades de estabelecer o limite entre o animal e o humano se estendem alĂ©m dos primatas e envolvem as mais inusitadas espĂ©cies zoolĂłgicas.Since ancient times, parrots and their allies (Psittacidae) have fascinated Europeans by their striking colors and notable ability to interact with human beings. The discovery of the New World added new species to the international exotic animal trade, which for many centuries had brought beasts to Europe from Africa and the Orient. Lacking large mammals, tropical America participated in this trade with its most appealing species, essentially felines, primates and birds - especially parrots - which were shipped in large numbers. It should be noted, however, that at times these birds were not well liked. In fact, according to documents from colonial Brazil, only the ants rank higher than parrots as the animals most often mentioned as agricultural pests. On the other hand, some of these birds were so chatty that people suspected them to be demonic or possessed animals, since only three classes of beings - angels, men and demons - have the ability to speak. Nowadays, several Psittacidae still constitute a threat to agriculture, and the suspicion that extremely talkative birds were demon possessed has also survived. More than a joke or a mere curiosity, this belief exemplifies how intricate manâs relationships with the ânatural worldâ may be. In this sense, the existence of birds that are able to speak adds a further twist to these relationships, demonstrating that the problem of establishing a boundary between the animal and the human does not only involve primates, but also includes some unusual zoological species
Validation of a magnetic resonance imaging guided stereotactic access to the ovine brainstem.
BackgroundAnatomical differences between humans and domestic mammals preclude the use of reported stereotactic approaches to the brainstem in animals. In animals, brainstem biopsies are required both for histopathological diagnosis of neurological disorders and for research purposes. Sheep are used as a translational model for various types of brain disease and therefore a species-specific approach needs to be developed. The aim of the present study was to establish a minimally invasive, accurate and reproducible stereotactic approach to the brainstem of sheep, using the magnetic resonance imaging guided BrainsightTM frameless stereotactic system.ResultsA transoccipital transcerebellar approach with an entry point in the occipital bone above the vermis between the transverse sinus and the external occipital protuberance was chosen. This approach provided access to the target site in all heads. The overall mean needle placement error was 1.85¿±¿1.22 mm.ConclusionsThe developed transoccipital transcerebellar route is short, provides accurate access to the ovine caudal cranial fossa and is a promising approach to be assessed further in live animals
