Atrial Dyssynchrony Measured by Strain Echocardiography as a Marker of Proarrhythmic Remodeling and Oxidative Stress in Cardiac Surgery Patients
Aging leads to structural and electrophysiological changes that increase the risk of postoperative atrial arrhythmias; however, noninvasive preoperative markers of atrial proarrhythmic conditions are still needed. This study is aimed at assessing whether interatrial dyssynchrony determined using two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography relates to proarrhythmic structural and functional remodeling. A cohort of 45 patients in sinus rhythm referred for cardiac surgery was evaluated by echocardiography and surface electrocardiogram the day before the intervention. Transmembrane potential, connexin, and potassium channel distribution, inflammatory, and nitrooxidative markers were measured from right atrial tissue obtained from patients. A difference greater than 40 milliseconds between right and left atrial free wall contraction confirmed the presence of interatrial dyssynchrony in 21 patients. No difference in relation with age, previous diseases, and 2-dimensional echocardiographic findings as well as average values of global longitudinal right and left atrial strain were found between synchronic and dyssynchronic patients. Postoperative atrial fibrillation incidence increased from 8.3% in the synchronic group to 33.3% in the dyssynchronic ones. P wave duration showed no difference between groups. Action potentials from dyssynchronous patients decreased in amplitude, maximal rate of depolarization, and hyperpolarized. Duration at 30% of repolarization increased, being markedly shorter at 90% of repolarization. Only the dyssynchronous group showed early and delayed afterdepolarizations. Atrial tissue of dyssynchronous patients displayed lateralization of connexin 40 and increased connexin 43 expression and accumulation of tumor necrosis factor-a in the intercalated disc. Tumor necrosis factor-a did not colocalize, however, with lateralized connexin 40. Nitroxidative marks and KATP channels increased perivascularly and in myocytes. Our results demonstrate that, as compared to a traditional surface electrocardiogram, the novel noninvasive echocardiographic evaluation of interatrial dyssynchrony provides a better identification of nonaged-related proarrhythmic atrial remodeling with increased susceptibility to postoperative atrial fibrillation

Low availability of choline in utero disrupts development and function of the retina
Adequate supply of choline, an essential nutrient, is necessary to support proper brain development. Whether prenatal choline availability plays a role in development of the visual system is currently unknown. In this study, we addressed the role of in utero choline supply for the development and later function of the retina in a mouse model. We lowered choline availability in the maternal diet during pregnancy and assessed proliferative and differentiation properties of retinal progenitor cells (RPCs) in the developing prenatal retina, as well as visual function in adult offspring. We report that low choline availability during retinogenesis leads to persistent retinal cytoarchitectural defects, ranging from focal lesions with displacement of retinal neurons into subretinal space to severe hypocellularity and ultrastructural defects in photoreceptor organization. We further show that low choline availability impairs timely differentiation of retinal neuronal cells, such that the densities of early-born retinal ganglion cells, amacrine and horizontal cells, as well as cone photoreceptor precursors, are reduced in low choline embryonic d 17.5 retinas. Maintenance of higher proportions of RPCs that fail to exit the cell cycle underlies aberrant neuronal differentiation in low choline embryos. Increased RPC cell cycle length, and associated reduction in neurofibromin 2/Merlin protein, an upstream regulator of the Hippo signaling pathway, at least in part, explain aberrant neurogenesis in low choline retinas. Furthermore, we find that animals exposed to low choline diet in utero exhibit a significant degree of intraindividual variation in vision, characterized by marked functional discrepancy between the 2 eyes in individual animals. Together, our findings demonstrate, for the first time, that choline availability plays an essential role in the regulation of temporal progression of retinogenesis and provide evidence for the importance of adequate supply of choline for proper development of the visual system
Entropy and universality of Cardy-Verlinde formula in dark energy universe
We study the entropy of a FRW universe filled with dark energy (cosmological
constant, quintessence or phantom). For general or time-dependent equation of
state the entropy is expressed in terms of energy, Casimir energy,
and . The correspondent expression reminds one about 2d CFT entropy only for
conformal matter. At the same time, the cosmological Cardy-Verlinde formula
relating three typical FRW universe entropies remains to be universal for any
type of matter. The same conclusions hold in modified gravity which represents
gravitational alternative for dark energy and which contains terms growing at
low curvature. It is interesting that BHs in modified gravity are more entropic
than in Einstein gravity. Finally, some hydrodynamical examples testing new
shear viscosity bound, which is expected to be the consequence of the
holographic entropy bound, are presented for the early universe in the plasma
era and for the Kasner metric. It seems that the Kasner metric provides a

Grain Surface Models and Data for Astrochemistry
AbstractThe cross-disciplinary field of astrochemistry exists to understand the formation, destruction, and survival of molecules in astrophysical environments. Molecules in space are synthesized via a large variety of gas-phase reactions, and reactions on dust-grain surfaces, where the surface acts as a catalyst. A broad consensus has been reached in the astrochemistry community on how to suitably treat gas-phase processes in models, and also on how to present the necessary reaction data in databases; however, no such consensus has yet been reached for grain-surface processes. A team of âŒ25 experts covering observational, laboratory and theoretical (astro)chemistry met in summer of 2014 at the Lorentz Center in Leiden with the aim to provide solutions for this problem and to review the current state-of-the-art of grain surface models, both in terms of technical implementation into models as well as the most up-to-date information available from experiments and chemical computations. This review builds on the results of this workshop and gives an outlook for future directions
Measurement of the Charged Multiplicities in b, c and Light Quark Events from Z0 Decays

light quark () events from decays measured in the SLD experiment.
Impact parameters of charged tracks were used to select enriched samples of
and light quark events, and reconstructed charmed mesons were used to select
quark events. We measured the charged multiplicities:

which we derived the differences between the total average charged
multiplicities of or quark events and light quark events: and . We compared
these measurements with those at lower center-of-mass energies and with
perturbative QCD predictions. These combined results are in agreement with the
QCD expectations and disfavor the hypothesis of flavor-independent

Olber's Paradox for Superluminal Neutrinos: Constraining Extreme Neutrino Speeds at TeV-ZeV Energies with the Diffuse Neutrino Background
The only invariant speed in special relativity is c; therefore, if some
neutrinos travel at even tiny speeds above c, normal special relativity is
incomplete and any superluminal speed may be possible. I derive a limit on
superluminal neutrino speeds v >> c at high energies by noting that such speeds
would increase the size of the neutrino horizon. The increased volume of the
Universe visible leads to a brighter astrophysical neutrino background. The
nondetection of "guaranteed" neutrino backgrounds from star-forming galaxies
and ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) constrains v/c at TeV--ZeV energies.
I find that v/c <= 820 at 60 TeV from the nondetection of neutrinos from
star-forming galaxies. The nondetection of neutrinos from UHECRs constrains v/c
to be less than 2500 at 0.1 EeV in a pessimistic model and less than 4.6 at 4
EeV in an optimistic model. The UHECR neutrino background nondetection is
strongly inconsistent with a naive quadratic extrapolation of the OPERA results
to EeV energies. The limits apply subject to some caveats, particularly that
the expected pionic neutrino backgrounds exist and that neutrinos travel faster
than c when they pass the detector. They could be improved substantially as the
expected neutrino backgrounds are better understood and with new experimental
neutrino background limits. I also point out that extremely subluminal speeds
