In 1795 Immanuel Kant issued an opuscle aimed at a general audience: Pax perpetua. It was a philosophical essay in wich he advanced some proposals on the institution of an intcrnational order valid enough tu eliminate the most irrational of evils: war. This article deals with some references about the historical and philosophical antecedents of that work in the XVII century, and it exposes its general structure together with its main arguments, attempting finally an essay of evaluation of a set of Kantian suggestions

Lectio at the Honoris Causa Doctorate by the University of Valencia: Some Reflections on ignorance

La revista CEFD quiere rendir tributo a la figura del Profesor Ernesto Garzón Valdés (1927-2023) con la publicación de su Lectio en el acto académico en el que recibió el Doctorado Honoris Causa por la Universitat de València el 12 de noviembre de 1998. ¿Qué puede significar pensar en español?

The expression “to think in Spanish” could be understand in two different senses: as an exhortation or as a description of an state of affairs. In the first sense it has a normative character. It can means something like “we must think in Spanish!”. In the second case, it would be a more or less vague formulation about the existence of a relevant intelectual tradition in the spanish language. The first interpretation is misleading and can have excluding or trivial consequences. The second one is partially true. I propose a third interpretation: “to think in Spanish” could be understood as an invitation not to forget our Spanish-speaking environment in the double sense of the physical and intelectual location of our effects to think with acertain claim of originalityLa expresión “Pensar en español” puede ser entendida en dos sentidos diferentes: como una exhortación o una descripción de un estado de cosas. En el primer caso tiene un carácter normativo: puede significar algo así como “¡hay que pensar en español!”. En el segundo caso, sería una formulación más o menos vaga sobre la existencia de una tradición intelectual relevante en lengua española. La primera interpretación es engañosa y puede tener consecuencias excluyentes o triviales. La segunda es parcialmente cierta. Propongo una tercera interpretación: “pensar en español” podría entenderse como una invitación a no olvidar nuestro entorno hispano-parlante en el doble sentido del lugar físico e intelectual de nuestros esfuerzos para pensar con una cierta afirmación de originalidad
