Complementary stereotyping of ethnic minorities predicts system justification in Poland
We investigate the phenomenon of complementary stereotyping of ethnic minorities in Poland and its relationship to system justification. Using results from a nationally representative survey we test the hypothesis that complementary stereotypesâaccording to which ethnic minorities are seen as possessing distinctive, offsetting strengths and weaknessesâwould be associated with system justification among Polish majority citizens. For four minorities, results indicated that stereotyping them as (a) low in morality but high in competence or (b) high in morality but low in competence predicted greater system justification. These results suggest that even in a context that is low in support for the status quo, complementary stereotyping of ethnic minorities is linked to system justification processes. For the three minority groups that were lowest in social status, complementary stereotyping was unrelated to system justification. It appears that negative attitude towards these groups can be expressed openly, regardless of oneâs degree of system justification

Most of those echo familiar misgivings about the notions of character, virtue and education in virtue â as unclear, redundant, old-fashioned, religious, paternalistic, anti-democratic, conservative, individualistic, relative and situation dependent. I expose those misgivings as âmythsâ, while at the same time acknowledging three better-founded historical, methodological and practical concerns about the notions in question
Thrilled to have âbagged a bargainâ or âbitterâ and âvery frustratingâ? Exploring consumer attitudes to value and deals in tourism
Similar to most global tourism markets, UK consumers adjusted their behavior during the global financial crisis, emphasizing value for money in travel choices. However, there is little evidence concerning consumersâ value-seeking behavior and especially how deals, discounts, and other sales promotions influence tourist decision making. This project explores concepts of value consciousness and deal proneness to shed light on attitudes toward monetary value in travel purchases. Using focus groups, the study found that deals and discounts frequently underpin some tourist choices, but that value consciousness is related to deal proneness, and interactions between the two could result in negative, positive, or mixed emotions. This relationship was captured through a dynamic categorization of touristsâ attitudes and behavior into four approaches to deals and value, namely, deals (1) as a way of life, (2) as a bonus, (3) as a problem, and (4) as toxic. The categories were dynamic in that individuals could move across them. The implications for tourism marketers are outlined
The transformative potential of reflective diaries for elite English cricketers
The sport of cricket has a history of its players suffering from mental health issues. The psychological study of cricket and, in particular, the attendant demands of participating at an elite level has not previously received rigorous academic attention. This study explored ten elite male cricketersâ experiences of keeping a daily reflective diary for one month during the competitive season. The aim was to assess how valuable qualitative diaries are in this field. Participants were interviewed regarding their appraisal of the methodology as a selfâhelp tool that could assist coping with performance pressures and wider life challenges. Three outcomes were revealed: first, that diary keeping was an effective opportunity to reflect upon the past and enhance oneâs self (both as an individual and a performer); second, that diary keeping acted as a form of release that allowed participants to progress; and third, that diary keeping allowed participants to discover personal patterns of success that increased the likeliness of optimum performance
Top Management Team Diversity: A systematic Review
Empirical research investigating the impact of top management team (TMT)
diversity on executivesâ decision making has produced inconclusive results.
To synthesize and aggregate the results on the diversity-performance
link, a meta-regression analysis (MRA) is conducted. It integrates more
than 200 estimates from 53 empirical studies investigating TMT diversity
and its impact on the quality of executivesâ decision making as reflected
in corporate performance. The analysis contributes to the literature by
theoretically discussing and empirically examining the effects of TMT diversity
on corporate performance. Our results do not show a link between TMT
diversity and performance but provide evidence for publication bias. Thus,
the findings raise doubts on the impact of TMT diversity on performance
Predictably confirmatory: The influence of stereotypes during decisional processing.
Stereotypes facilitate the processing of expectancy-consistent (vs expectancy-inconsistent) information, yet the underlying origin of this congruency effect remains unknown. As such, here we sought to identify the cognitive operations through which stereotypes influence decisional processing. In six experiments, participants responded to stimuli that were consistent or inconsistent with respect to prevailing gender stereotypes. To identify the processes underpinning task performance, responses were submitted to a hierarchical drift diffusion model (HDDM) analysis. A consistent pattern of results emerged. Whether manipulated at the level of occupational (Expts. 1, 3, and 5) or trait-based (Expts. 2, 4, and 6) expectancies, stereotypes facilitated task performance and influenced decisional processing via a combination of response and stimulus biases. Specifically, (1) stereotype-consistent stimuli were classified more rapidly than stereotype-inconsistent stimuli; (2) stereotypic responses were favoured over counter-stereotypic responses (i.e., starting-point shift towards stereotypic responses); (3) less evidence was required when responding to stereotypic than counter-stereotypic stimuli (i.e., narrower threshold separation for stereotypic stimuli); and (4) decisional evidence was accumulated more efficiently for stereotype-inconsistent than stereotype-consistent stimuli and when targets had a typical than atypical facial appearance. Spatial Resolution of Double-Sided Silicon Microstrip Detectors for the PAMELA Apparatus
The PAMELA apparatus has been assembled and it is ready to be launched in a
satellite mission to study mainly the antiparticle component of cosmic rays. In
this paper the performances obtained for the silicon microstrip detectors used
in the magnetic spectrometer are presented. This subdetector reconstructs the
curvature of a charged particle in the magnetic field produced by a permanent
magnet and consequently determines momentum and charge sign, thanks to a very
good accuracy in the position measurements (better than 3 um in the bending
coordinate). A complete simulation of the silicon microstrip detectors has been
developed in order to investigate in great detail the sensor's characteristics.
Simulated events have been then compared with data gathered from minimum
ionizing particle (MIP) beams during the last years in order to tune free
parameters of the simulation. Finally some either widely used or original
position finding algorithms, designed for such kind of detectors, have been
applied to events with different incidence angles. As a result of the analysis,
a method of impact point reconstruction can be chosen, depending on both the
particle's incidence angle and the cluster multiplicity, so as to maximize the
