Interactive computer methods of working directly with ERTS digital information show much promise for providing land use information at a more specific level, since the data format production rate of ERTS justifies improved methods of analysis
Superconductivity in an Einstein Solid AxV2Al20 (A = Al and Ga)
A cage compound AxV2Al20 (Al10V), that was called an Einstein solid by Caplin
and coworkers 40 years ago, is revisited to investigate the low-energy, local
vibrations of the A atoms and their influence on the electronic and
superconducting properties of the compound. Polycrystalline samples with A =
Al, Ga, Y, and La are studied through resistivity and heat capacity
measurements. Weak-coupling BCS superconductivity is observed below Tc = 1.49,
1.66, and 0.69 K for Ax = Al0.3, Ga0.2, and Y, respectively, but not above 0.4
K for Ax = La. Low-energy modes are detected only for A = Al and Ga, which are
approximately described by the Einstein model with Einstein temperatures of 24
and 8 K, respectively. A weak but significant coupling between the low-energy
modes, which are almost identical to those called rattling in recent study, and
conduction electrons manifests itself as anomalous enhancement in resistivity
at around low temperatures corresponding to the Einstein temperatures.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, to be published in J. Phys. Soc. Jp
Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence Mapping of a Carbon Laser Produced Plasma
We present measurements of ion velocity distribution profiles obtained by
laser induced fluorescence (LIF) on an explosive laser produced plasma (LPP).
The spatio-temporal evolution of the resulting carbon ion velocity distribution
was mapped by scanning through the Doppler-shifted absorption wavelengths using
a tunable, diode-pumped laser. The acquisition of this data was facilitated by
the high repetition rate capability of the ablation laser (1 Hz) which allowed
the accumulation of thousand of laser shots in short experimental times. By
varying the intensity of the LIF beam, we were able to explore the effects of
fluorescence power against laser irradiance in the context of evaluating the
saturation versus the non-saturation regime. The small beam size of the LIF
beam led to high spatial resolution of the measurement compared to other ion
velocity distribution measurement techniques, while the fast-gated operation
mode of the camera detector enabled the measurement of the relevant electron
transitions
Causes of prehospital misinterpretations of ST elevation myocardial infarction
Objectives: To determine the causes of software misinterpretation of ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) compared to clinically identified STEMI to identify opportunities to improve prehospital STEMI identification. Methods: We compared ECGs acquired from July 2011 through June 2012 using the LIFEPAK 15 on adult patients transported by the Los Angeles Fire Department. Cases included patients ≥18 years who received a prehospital ECG. Software interpretation of the ECG (STEMI or not) was compared with data in the regional EMS registry to classify the interpretation as true positive (TP), true negative (TN), false positive (FP), or false negative (FN). For cases where classification was not possible using registry data, 3 blinded cardiologists interpreted the ECG. Each discordance was subsequently reviewed to determine the likely cause of misclassification. The cardiologists independently reviewed a sample of these discordant ECGs and the causes of misclassification were updated in an iterative fashion. Results: Of 44,611 cases, 50% were male (median age 65; inter-quartile range 52–80). Cases were classified as 482 (1.1%) TP, 711 (1.6%) FP, 43371 (97.2%) TN, and 47 (0.11%) FN. Of the 711 classified as FP, 126 (18%) were considered appropriate for, though did not undergo, emergent coronary angiography, because the ECG showed definite (52 cases) or borderline (65 cases) ischemic ST elevation, a STEMI equivalent (5 cases) or ST-elevation due to vasospasm (4 cases). The sensitivity was 92.8% [95% CI 90.6, 94.7%] and the specificity 98.7% [95% CI 98.6, 98.8%]. The leading causes of FP were ECG artifact (20%), early repolarization (16%), probable pericarditis/myocarditis (13%), indeterminate (12%), left ventricular hypertrophy (8%), and right bundle branch block (5%). There were 18 additional reasons for FP interpretation (<4% each). The leading causes of FN were borderline ST-segment elevations less than the algorithm threshold (40%) and tall T waves reducing the ST/T ratio below threshold (15%). There were 11 additional reasons for FN interpretation occurring ≤3 times each. Conclusion: The leading causes of FP automated interpretation of STEMI were ECG artifact and non-ischemic causes of ST-segment elevation. FN were rare and were related to ST-segment elevation or ST/T ratio that did not meet the software algorithm threshold

Church-Rosser Systems, Codes with Bounded Synchronization Delay and Local Rees Extensions
What is the common link, if there is any, between Church-Rosser systems,
prefix codes with bounded synchronization delay, and local Rees extensions? The
first obvious answer is that each of these notions relates to topics of
interest for WORDS: Church-Rosser systems are certain rewriting systems over
words, codes are given by sets of words which form a basis of a free submonoid
in the free monoid of all words (over a given alphabet) and local Rees
extensions provide structural insight into regular languages over words. So, it
seems to be a legitimate title for an extended abstract presented at the
conference WORDS 2017. However, this work is more ambitious, it outlines some
less obvious but much more interesting link between these topics. This link is
based on a structure theory of finite monoids with varieties of groups and the
concept of local divisors playing a prominent role. Parts of this work appeared
in a similar form in conference proceedings where proofs and further material

Risk of acquired drug resistance during short-course directly observed treatment of tuberculosis in an area with high levels of drug resistance.
BACKGROUND: Data on the performance of standardized short-course directly observed treatment (DOTS) of tuberculosis (TB) in areas with high levels of drug resistance and on the potential impact of DOTS on amplification of resistance are limited. Therefore, we analyzed treatment results from a cross-sectional sample of patients with TB enrolled in a DOTS program in an area with high levels of drug resistance in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan in Central Asia. METHODS: Sputum samples for testing for susceptibility to 5 first-line drugs and for molecular typing were obtained from patients starting treatment in 8 districts. Patients with sputum smear results positive for TB at the end of the intensive phase of treatment and/or at 2 months into the continuation phase were tested again. RESULTS. Among 382 patients with diagnoses of TB, 62 did not respond well to treatment and were found to be infected with an identical Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain when tested again; 19 of these patients had strains that developed new or additional drug resistance. Amplification occurred in only 1.2% of patients with initially susceptible or monoresistant TB strains, but it occurred in 17% of those with polyresistant strains (but not multidrug-resistant strains, defined as strains with resistance to at least isoniazid and rifampicin) and in 7% of those with multidrug-resistant strains at diagnosis. Overall, 3.5% of the patients not initially infected with multidrug-resistant TB strains developed such strains during treatment. Amplification of resistance, however, was found only in polyresistant Beijing genotype strains. CONCLUSIONS: High levels of amplification of drug resistance demonstrated under well-established DOTS program conditions reinforce the need for implementation of DOTS-Plus for multidrug-resistant TB in areas with high levels of drug resistance. The strong association of Beijing genotype and amplification in situations of preexisting resistance is striking and may underlie the strong association between this genotype and drug resistance
Exploring supply chain resilience in the South African telecommunications industry
Supply chain resilience (SCRES) is an essential consideration for organisations globally across diverse industries. Paradoxes in the SCRES literature are evident. On the one hand, more resilience is considered better while on the other hand it is acknowledged that resilience results in an additional cost to the focal organisation. The purpose of this study was to explore SCRES, specifically resources committed and predetermined in the process of achieving resilience. Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted in the South African telecommunications industry. The main findings of this study identified the drawbacks of SCRES which include financial implications, unwillingly adopting a follower strategy and deleterious effects on customer service. The study further identified measures to prevent the over-utilisation of resources to achieve SCRES such as the learning curve, customer satisfaction and the optimal level of SCRES. Organisational strategy and return on investment (ROI) are the primary considerations for allocating resources to achieve SCRES. This study is one of the first generic qualitative studies to explore SCRES a developing country context. Managers can consider the findings of this study to develop a relevant and customer-driven SCRES strategy that would appeal to organisational shareholders.http://www.journals.co.za/content/journal/jcmanam2020Business Managemen
Treatment of tuberculosis in a region with high drug resistance: Outcomes, drug resistance amplification and re-infection
Introduction: Emerging antituberculosis drug resistance is a serious threat for tuberculosis (TB) control, especially in Eastern
European countries.
Methods: We combined drug susceptibility results and molecular strain typing data with treatment outcome reports to
assess the influence of drug resistance on TB treatment outcomes in a prospective cohort of patients from Abkhazia
(Georgia). Patients received individualized treatment regimens based on drug susceptibility testing (DST) results. Definitions
for antituberculosis drug resistance and treatment outcomes were in line with current WHO recommendations. First and
second line DST, and molecular typing were performed in a supranational laboratory for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)
strains from consecutive sputum smear-positive TB patients at baseline and during treatment.
Results: At baseline, MTB strains were fully drug-susceptible in 189/326 (58.0%) of patients. Resistance to at least H or R
(PDR-TB) and multidrug-resistance (MDR-TB) were found in 69/326 (21.2%) and 68/326 (20.9%) of strains, respectively. Three
MDR-TB strains were also extensively resistant (XDR-TB). During treatment, 3/189 (1.6%) fully susceptible patients at baseline
were re-infected with a MDR-TB strain and 2/58 (3.4%) PDR-TB patients became MDR-TB due to resistance amplification. 5/
47 (10.6%) MDR- patients became XDR-TB during treatment. Treatment success was observed in 161/189 (85.2%), 54/69
(78.3%) and 22/68 (32.3%) of patients with fully drug susceptible, PDR- and MDR-TB, respectively. Development of ofloxacin
resistance was significantly associated with a negative treatment outcome.
Conclusion: In Abkhazia, a region with high prevalence of drug resistant TB, the use of individualized MDR-TB treatment
regimens resulted in poor treatment outcomes and XDR-TB amplification. Nosocomial transmission of MDR-TB emphasizes
the importance of infection control in hospitals
