    Timber roof structure for outdoor auditorium in Parque Paraiso, San Blas (Madrid)

    p. 468-475A timber shell structure is designed to provide covering for an outdoor auditorium in Madrid (Spain). The covering comprises five independent overlapped marquees with similar shape but diverse dimensions. The surface geometry of each marquee is defined by a hyperbolic paraboloid, with its boundaries delimited by elliptical curves in horizontal projection. Structural section for the timber shell is a composite section with several staggered layers of straight sawn timber planks, arranged in two orthogonal directions following the straight skew lines of the hyperbolic paraboloid. Over them two continuous top layers are arranged which provides bracing for the structure and support for the waterproofing material. Each layer is laid over the previous one, bolted and glued with polyurethane adhesive. Special characteristics of the design analysis and detailed erection process are described.     15-Deoxy-Δ-12, 14-prostaglandin J2 acts cooperatively with prednisolone to reduce TGF-β-induced pro-fibrotic pathways in human osteoarthritis fibroblasts

    [Abstract] Abstract Background/aims: Synovial fibrosis is a pathological process that is observed in several musculoskeletal disorders and characterized by the excessive deposition of extracellular matrix, as well as cell migration and proliferation. Despite the fact that glucocorticoids are widely employed in the treatment of rheumatic pathologies such as osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis, the mechanisms by which glucocorticoids act in the joint and their impacts on pro-fibrotic pathways are still unclear. Materials: Human OA synovial fibroblasts were obtained from knee and hip joints. Cells were treated with prednisolone (1 mM) or transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) (10 ng/ml) for 1 and 7 days for quantification of RNA and protein expression (by real-time quantitative reverse transcription-PCR and western blot, respectively), 72 h for immunocytochemistry analysis, and 48 h for proliferation (by BrdU assay) and migration (by wound assay) studies. In addition, cells were preincubated with prednisolone and/or the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) agonist 15-deoxy-Δ-12,14-prostaglandin J2 (15d-PGJ2) for 6 h before adding TGF-β1. pSmad1/5, pSmad2 and β-catenin levels were analyzed by Western blot. The activin receptor-like kinase-5 (ALK-5) inhibitor (SB-431542) was employed for the mechanistic assays. Results: Prednisolone showed a predominant anti-fibrotic impact on fibroblast-like synoviocytes as it attenuated the spontaneous and TGF-β-induced gene expression of pro-fibrotic markers. Prednisolone also reduced α-sma protein and type III collagen levels, as well as cell proliferation and migration after TGF-β stimulation. However, prednisolone did not downregulate the gene expression of all the pro-fibrotic markers tested and did not restore the reduced PPAR-γ levels after TGF-β stimulation. Interestingly, anti-fibrotic actions of the glucocorticoid were reinforced in the presence of the PPAR-γ agonist 15d-PGJ2. Combined pretreatment modulated Smad2/3 levels and, similar to the ALK-5 inhibitor, blocked β-catenin accumulation elicited by TGF-β. Conclusions: Prednisolone, along with 15d-PGJ2, modulates pro-fibrotic pathways activated by TGF-β in synovial fibroblasts at least partially through the inhibition of ALK5/Smad2 signaling and subsequent β-catenin accumulation. These findings shed light on the potential therapeutic effects of glucocorticoids treatment combined with a PPAR-γ agonist against synovial fibrosis, although future studies are warranted to further evaluate this concern

    El objetivo de esta revisión es resumir la evidencia disponible sobre los posibles efectos adversos del SARS-CoV-2 en el sistema reproductor masculino y proporcionar una declaración de posición oficial de la Asociación Española de Andrología, Medicina Sexual y Reproductiva (ASESA). Se realizó una búsqueda exhaustiva en las bibliotecas Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase, Medline, Cochrane y MedRxiv. No se ha confirmado la orquitis como una posible complicación de la infección por SARS-CoV-2. Un estudio informó que el 19% de los hombres con COVID-19 presentaban molestias escrotales sugestivas de orquitis viral, que no se pudo confirmar. Es posible que el virus no infecte los testículos directamente, si no que desencadene una respuesta autoinmune secundaria y que cause una orquitis autoinmune. COVID-19 se ha asociado con anormalidades en la coagulación por lo que la orquitis podría ser el resultado de una vasculitis segmentaria. Los datos disponibles sobre la presencia del virus en semen son contradictorios. Sólo un estudio informó de la presencia de ARN en el 15,8% de enfermos de COVID-19. La presencia de ácido nucleico o antígeno en el semen no implica la existencia de virus con capacidad de replicación o infección. En hombres con COVID-19 se ha observado un incremento significativo de LH en suero y una drástica disminución de la ratio T/LH y FSH/LH, congruente con un hipogonadismo subclínico. Los datos disponibles y los hallazgos de los estudios recientes se basan en tamaños de muestra pequeños y proporcionan informaciones contradictorias. Existe la posibilidad teórica de que pueda producirse daño testicular y posterior infertilidad después de la infección por COVID-19, por lo que especialmente para aquellos hombres en edad reproductiva, se debe sugerir consulta y evaluación de la función gonadal y análisis de semen. En cuanto a la posibilidad de transmisión sexual, no hay evidencia suficiente para respaldar la necesidad de que las parejas asintomáticas eviten las relaciones sexuales para protegerse contra la transmisión del virus. Se necesita más investigación para comprender los impactos a largo plazo del SARS-CoV-2 en la función reproductiva masculina, incluidos sus posibles efectos sobre la fertilidad y la función endocrina testicular

    Strategies for greenhouse gas emissions mitigation in Mediterranean agriculture: A review

    [EN] An integrated assessment of the potential of different management practices for mitigating specific components of the total GHG budget (N2O and CH4 emissions and C sequestration) of Mediterranean agrosystems was performed in this study. Their suitability regarding both yield and environmental (e.g. nitrate leaching and ammonia volatilization) sustainability, and regional barriers and opportunities for their implementation were also considered. Based on its results best strategies to abate GHG emissions in Mediterranean agro-systems were proposed. Adjusting N fertilization to crop needs in both irrigated and rain-fed systems could reduce N2O emissions up to 50% compared with a non-adjusted practice. Substitution of N synthetic fertilizers by solid manure can be also implemented in those systems, and may abate N2O emissions by about 20% under Mediterranean conditions, with additional indirect benefits associated to energy savings and positive effects in crop yields. The use of urease and nitrification inhibitors enhances N use efficiency of the cropping systems and may mitigate N2O emissions up to 80% and 50%, respectively. The type of irrigation may also have a great mitigation potential in the Mediterranean region. Drip-irrigated systems have on average 80% lower N2O emissions than sprinkler systems and drip-irrigation combined with optimized fertilization showed a reduction in direct N2O emissions up to 50%. Methane fluxes have a relatively small contribution to the total GHG budget of Mediterranean crops, which can mostly be controlled by careful management of the water table and organic inputs in paddies. Reduced soil tillage, improved management of crop residues and agro-industry by-products, and cover cropping in orchards, are the most suitable interventions to enhance organic C stocks in Mediterranean agricultural soils. The adoption of the proposed agricultural practices will require farmers training. The global analysis of life cycle emissions associated to irrigation type (drip, sprinkle and furrow) and N fertilization rate (100 and 300 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1)) revealed that these factors may outweigh the reduction in GHG emissions beyond the plot scale. The analysis of the impact of some structural changes on top-down mitigation of GHG emissions revealed that 3-15% of N2O emissions could be suppressed by avoiding food waste at the end-consumer level. A 40% reduction in meat and dairy consumption could reduce GHG emissions by 20-30%. Reintroducing the Mediterranean diet (i.e. similar to 35% intake of animal protein) would therefore result in a significant decrease of GHG emissions from agricultural production systems under Mediterranean conditions.     Measured greenhouse gas budgets challenge emission savings from palm-oil biodiesel

Meijide during the preparation of this paper.The potential of palm-oil biofuels to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared with fossil fuels is increasingly questioned. So far, no measurement-based GHG budgets were available, and plantation age was ignored in Life Cycle Analyses (LCA). Here, we conduct LCA based on measured CO2, CH4 and N2O fluxes in young and mature Indonesian oil palm plantations. CO2 dominates the on-site GHG budgets. The young plantation is a carbon source (1012 ± 51 gC m−2 yr−1), the mature plantation a sink (−754 ± 38 gC m−2 yr−1). LCA considering the measured fluxes shows higher GHG emissions for palm-oil biodiesel than traditional LCA assuming carbon neutrality. Plantation rotation-cycle extension and earlier-yielding varieties potentially decrease GHG emissions.     Spain: Underwater Exploration on a Narrow Continental Shelf

    In spite of Spain’s long coastline (nearly 8000 km) and its well-established tradition in underwater archaeology, the prehistoric settlement of the continental shelf is practically unknown with very few finds. Underwater research has focused on naval archaeology and, until very recently, no attempt had been made to look for prehistoric underwater sites. In the past decade,new research projects have been launched to explore selected areas on the Cantabrian shelf and offshore of Gibraltar.
