The single monetary policy and domestic macro-fundamentals: Evidence from Spain
We model pre-euro Spanish monetary policy and use our findings to assess the compatibility of the interest rates set by the ECB since 1999 with Spanish macrofundamentals. We find that in the 1990s Spain implemented successfully a monetary strategy tailored to its own domestic fundamentals; and by abolishing it to join the euro she has paid a cost in the form of a sub-optimal monetary policy. Spain's experience suggests a cautious approach with regards to the timing of further EMU enlargement
Improved thermal isolation of silicon suspended platforms for an all-silicon thermoelectric microgenerator based on large scale integration of Si nanowires as thermoelectric material
Special suspended micro-platforms have been designed as a part of silicon compatible planar thermoelectric microgenerators. Bottom-up grown silicon nanowires are going to bridge in the future such platforms to the surrounding silicon bulk rim. They will act as thermoelectric material thus configuring an all-silicon thermoelectric device. In the new platform design other additional bridging elements (usually auxiliary support silicon beams) are substituted by low conductance thin film dielectric membranes in order to maximize the temperature difference developed between both areas. These membranes follow a sieve-like design that allows fabricating them with a short additional wet anisotropic etch step. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
The great recession: The worst ever?
We develop an international comparative assessment of the Great Recession, in terms of the features that characterize the form of the recession phases, namely length, depth and shape. The potential unobserved heterogeneity in the international recession characteristics is modeled by a finite mixture model. Using Bayesian inference via Gibbs sampling, the model classifies the Great Recession suffered by a large number of countries into different clusters, determin ing its severity in cross section and time series and dimensions. Our results suggest that the business cycle features of the Great Recession are not different from others in an international perspective. By contrast, we show that the only distinctive feature of the Great Recession was its unprecedented degree of synchronicity
Homogeneous geodesics of non-unimodular Lorentzian Lie groups and naturally reductive Lorentzian spaces in dimension three
We determine, for all three-dimensional non-unimodular Lie groups equipped
with a Lorentzian metric, the set of homogeneous geodesics through a point.
Together with the results of [C] and [CM2], this leads to the full
classification of three-dimensional Lorentzian g.o. spaces and naturally
reductive spaces
Clusters in Light Nuclei
A great deal of research work has been undertaken in the alpha-clustering
study since the pioneering discovery, half a century ago, of 12C+12C molecular
resonances. Our knowledge of the field of the physics of nuclear molecules has
increased considerably and nuclear clustering remains one of the most fruitful
domains of nuclear physics, facing some of the greatest challenges and
opportunities in the years ahead. In this work, the occurence of "exotic"
shapes in light N=Z alpha-like nuclei is investigated. Various approaches of
superdeformed and hyperdeformed bands associated with quasimolecular resonant
structures are presented. Results on clustering aspects are also discussed for
light neutron-rich Oxygen isotopes.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. Invited Talk presented by C. Beck at the

Private bank deposits and macro/fiscal risk in the euro-area
We use a panel of ten euro area member states to examine the link between macro/fiscal risk and private bank deposits relative to Germany. Our main findings are summarised as follows: First, the relationship between relative deposits and macro/fiscal risk factors is not stable over time. Second, the significant time variation characterizing this relationship is driven by aggregate EMU-wide macro/fiscal risk conditions. Third, relative deposits in periphery EMU countries are generally more responsive to macro/fiscal risk. Fourth, the ECB’s unconventional monetary policy moderated the effect of the global financial and European debt crises on the relationship between relative deposits and macro/fiscal risk. Our empirical findings can inform the ongoing policy debate regarding the completion of the European Banking Union
Lifetime measurements in Co and Co
Lifetimes of the and states in Co and the
state in Co were measured using the recoil distance Doppler
shift and the differential decay curve methods. The nuclei were populated by
multi-nucleon transfer reactions in inverse kinematics. Gamma rays were
measured with the EXOGAM Ge array and the recoiling fragments were fully
identified using the large-acceptance VAMOS spectrometer. The E2 transition
probabilities from the and states to the ground
state could be extracted in Co as well as an upper limit for the
(E2) value in Co. The experimental
results were compared to large-scale shell-model calculations in the and
model spaces, allowing to draw conclusions on the single-particle
or collective nature of the various states.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Physical

Relationship between sperm quality traits and field-fertility of porcine semen
An investigation involving seven boars, active in artificial insemination, and 1,350 multiparous sows was conducted at a private farm and aimed at examining the relationship between sperm quality traits and boar fertility in terms of farrowing rate and litter size. This experiment was done for 6 months. The semen samples were evaluated for subjective sperm motility and concentration. Ejaculates with at least 1 × 108 sperm/mL and 70% sperm progressive motility were extended with a commercial medium to 30 × 106 sperm/mL and used for artificial insemination (AI). AI dose was 100 mL semen containing 3 × 109 spermatozoa. Aliquots of diluted semen were assessed for live morphologically normal spermatozoa (LMNS, eosin-nigrosin stain exclusion assay) and sperm chromatin instability (SCI, acridine orange assay). Farrowing rates according to different boar sperm varied (p < 0.001) from 59.3 to 88.92%. The mean values of LMNS (47.2~76.5%) and SCI (0.16~4.67%) differed significantly among boars. LMNS (r = 0.79, p < 0.05) and SCI (r = -0.90, p < 0.02) accounted for 62.2 and 81.7% of the variability in farrowing rates, respectively. After the combination of sperm traits, the relationship between percentage of LMNS with stable chromatin structure and farrowing rate was significant (r = 0.86, p < 0.05). The number of live piglets per parturition was not significantly correlated with sperm quality attributes. In conclusion, boar fertility after AI with freshly diluted semen can be predicted based on the evaluation of sperm morphology and chromatin integrity
coupling determined beyond the chiral limit
Within the conventional QCD sum rules, we calculate the coupling
constant, , beyond the chiral limit using two-point correlation
function with a pion. We consider the Dirac structure, , at
order, which has clear dependence on the PS and PV coupling schemes
for the pion-nucleon interactions. For a consistent treatment of the sum rule,
we include the linear terms in quark mass as they constitute the same chiral
order as . Using the PS coupling scheme for the pion-nucleon
interaction, we obtain , which is very close to the
empirical coupling. This demonstrates that going beyond the chiral
limit is crucial in determining the coupling and the pseudoscalar coupling
scheme is preferable from the QCD point of view.Comment: 8 pages, revtex, some errors are corrected, substantially revise
