    GIS-Modellierung periglazial beeinflusster Verwitterungsdecken in Mittelgebirgen

    Das vorgestellte GIS Werkzeug ist die Um-setzung eines Landschaftsentwicklungs-modells (LEM). Dieses LEM soll der Vor-hersage des Ausgangsmaterials der Boden-bildung in der Fläche dienen. Im Besonde-ren ist die prozessorientierte Model¬lierung periglaziärer Lagen (AD HOC AG BODEN 2005), in der deutschsprachi¬gen Literatur auch als Deckschichten be¬kannt (vgl. ALTERMANN et al 2008), erklär¬tes Ziel der Entwicklung. Das LEM wurde speziell für die Anwendung im Bereich des eiszeitlich unvergletscherten mitteleuropäischen Berg-lands (Festge¬steinsbereich) entwickelt. Der Begriff Regolith wird hier nach SCOTT&PAIN (2008, S.1) als die Schicht zwischen „frischem Festgestein und frischer Luft verstanden“. Diese enthält so-mit sowohl in situ verwittertes Material als auch Beimengungen von Fremdmaterial aus Transportgeschehen. Im Sinne eines deduktiven Modells (BÖHNER 2006) versucht das hier vorge-stellte LEM prozessorientiert Regolith-eigenschaften zunächst für einen speziellen Naturraum zu modellieren. Daten zum Regolith sind nur lückenhaft vor¬handen: zwischen flächenhaften Daten zu Böden, die meist als analoge oder digitale Bodentypenkarten vorliegen, und flächen¬haften Daten zur Geologie der Festgesteine, als Geologische Karten, klafft eine Datenlücke. In dieser Lücke be¬findet sich der Regolith bzw. befinden sich die Verwitterungsdecken aus autochthonem und allochthonem Lockermaterial. Universität Hamburg Institut für Geographie Bundesstraße 55 20146 Hamburg Die holozäne Bodenentwicklung allerdings findet jedoch auf genau diesem Material statt und adaptiert somit die Material-eigenschaften des Regoliths: beispielswei-se sind Korngrößenzusammenset¬zung, Lagerungsdichte, Mineralzusammen-setzung und Porenvolumen direkt abhängig von den physikalischen Eigenschaften des Ausgangsmaterials. Durch Prozesse der Bodenbildung werden diese Eigenschaften im Lauf der weiteren Entwicklung zwar verändert, jedoch ist das Ausgangsmaterial für die Böden stark prägend und paust sich lange Zeit in den Eigenschaften der Böden durch. Dazu kommt, dass in vielen Fällen der Regolith wesentlich mächtiger als der sich darauf be-findende Boden ist.     Definition of Estrogen Receptor Pathway Critical for Estrogen Positive Feedback to Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Neurons and Fertility

    SummaryThe mechanisms through which estrogen regulates gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons to control mammalian ovulation are unknown. We found that estrogen positive feedback to generate the preovulatory gonadotropin surge was normal in estrogen receptor β knockout (ERβ) mutant mice, but absent in ERα mutant mice. An ERα-selective compound was sufficient to generate positive feedback in wild-type mice. As GnRH neurons do not express ERα, estrogen positive feedback upon GnRH neurons must be indirect in nature. To establish the cell type responsible, we generated a neuron-specific ERα mutant mouse line. These mice failed to exhibit estrogen positive feedback, demonstrating that neurons expressing ERα are critical. We then used a GnRH neuron-specific Pseudorabies virus (PRV) tracing approach to show that the ERα-expressing neurons innervating GnRH neurons are located within rostral periventricular regions of the hypothalamus. These studies demonstrate that ovulation is driven by estrogen actions upon ERα-expressing neuronal afferents to GnRH neurons

    Measurement of the hadronic photon structure function F_{2}^{γ} at LEP2

    The hadronic structure function of the photon F_{2}^{γ} (x, Q²) is measured as a function of Bjorken x and of the photon virtuality Q² using deep-inelastic scattering data taken by the OPAL detector at LEP at e⁺e⁻ centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. Previous OPAL measurements of the x dependence of F_{2}^{γ} are extended to an average Q² of 〈Q²〉=780 GeV² using data in the kinematic range 0.15<x<0.98. The Q² evolution of F_{2}^{γ} is studied for 12.1<〈Q²〉<780 GeV² using three ranges of x. As predicted by QCD, the data show positive scaling violations in F_{2}^{γ} with F_{2}^{γ} (Q²)/α = (0.08±0.02⁺⁰·⁰⁵_₀.₀₃) + (0.13±0.01⁺⁰·⁰¹_₀.₀₁) lnQ², where Q² is in GeV², for the central x region 0.10–0.60. Several parameterisations of F_{2}^{γ} are in qualitative agreement with the measurements whereas the quark-parton model prediction fails to describe the data

    Measurement of the charm structure function F_{2,c)^{γ} of the photon at LEP

    The production of charm quarks is studied in deep-inelastic electron–photon scattering using data recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP at nominal e⁺e⁻ centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. The charm quarks have been identified by full reconstruction of charged D* mesons using their decays into D⁰π with the D⁰ observed in two decay modes with charged particle final states, Kπ and Kπππ. The cross-section σ^{D*} for production of charged D* in the reaction e⁺e⁻→e⁺e⁻D*Χ is measured in a restricted kinematical region using two bins in Bjorken x, 0.00140.1 the perturbative QCD calculation at next-to-leading order agrees perfectly with the measured cross-section. For x<0.1 the measured cross-section is 43.8±14.3±6.3±2.8 pb with a next-to-leading order prediction of 17.0⁺²·⁹_₂.₃ pb

    Acremolin, a stable natural product with an antiaromatic 1H-azirine moiety? A structural reorientation

    Recently, acremolin (4), a novel modified base, was isolated from a marine-derived fungus and claimed to possess a structure with a 1H-azirine moiety. It is shown now that the reported NMR data are not compatible with this antiaromatic heterocycle, which should be an extremely unstable compound. An isomeric, substituted N2,3-ethenoguanine is presented as a plausible alternative structure of acremolin that is consistent with all spectroscopic data. Thus, 1H-azirines keep their classification as very short-lived intermediates

    Measurement of triple gauge boson couplings from W⁺W⁻ production at LEP energies up to 189 GeV

    A measurement of triple gauge boson couplings is presented, based on W-pair data recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP during 1998 at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 183 pb⁻¹. After combining with our previous measurements at centre-of-mass energies of 161–183 GeV we obtain κ = 0.97_{-0.16}^{+0.20}, g_{1}^{z} = 0.991_{-0.057}^{+0.060} and λ = -0.110_{-0.055}^{+0.058}, where the errors include both statistical and systematic uncertainties and each coupling is determined by setting the other two couplings to their Standard Model values. These results are consistent with the Standard Model expectations

    Two-proton correlations from 158 AGeV Pb+Pb central collisions

    The two-proton correlation function at midrapidity from Pb+Pb central collisions at 158 AGeV has been measured by the NA49 experiment. The results are compared to model predictions from static thermal Gaussian proton source distributions and transport models RQMD and VENUS. An effective proton source size is determined by minimizing CHI-square/ndf between the correlation functions of the data and those calculated for the Gaussian sources, yielding 3.85 +-0.15(stat.) +0.60-0.25(syst.) fm. Both the RQMD and the VENUS model are consistent with the data within the error in the correlation peak region.Comment: RevTeX style, 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. More discussion are added about the structure on the tail of the correlation function. The systematic error is revised. To appear in Phys. Lett.

    Event-by-event fluctuations of average transverse momentum in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon

    We present first data on event-by-event fluctuations in the average transverse momentum of charged particles produced in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. This measurement provides previously unavailable information allowing sensitive tests of microscopic and thermodynamic collision models and to search for fluctuations expected to occur in the vicinity of the predicted QCD phase transition. We find that the observed variance of the event-by-event average transverse momentum is consistent with independent particle production modified by the known two-particle correlations due to quantum statistics and final state interactions and folded with the resolution of the NA49 apparatus. For two specific models of non-statistical fluctuations in transverse momentum limits are derived in terms of fluctuation amplitude. We show that a significant part of the parameter space for a model of isospin fluctuations predicted as a consequence of chiral symmetry restoration in a non-equilibrium scenario is excluded by our measurement.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys.     Baryon Stopping and Charged Particle Distributions in Central Pb+Pb Collisions at 158 GeV per Nucleon

    Net proton and negative hadron spectra for central \PbPb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon at the CERN SPS were measured and compared to spectra from lighter systems. Net baryon distributions were derived from those of net protons, utilizing model calculations of isospin contributions as well as data and model calculations of strange baryon distributions. Stopping (rapidity shift with respect to the beam) and mean transverse momentum \meanpt of net baryons increase with system size. The rapidity density of negative hadrons scales with the number of participant nucleons for nuclear collisions, whereas their \meanpt is independent of system size. The \meanpt dependence upon particle mass and system size is consistent with larger transverse flow velocity at midrapidity for \PbPb compared to \SS central collisions.Comment: This version accepted for publication in PRL. 4 pages, 3 figures.     Measurement of the partial widths of the Z into up- and down-type quarks

    Using the entire OPAL LEP1 on-peak Z hadronic decay sample, Z -> qbarq gamma decays were selected by tagging hadronic final states with isolated photon candidates in the electromagnetic calorimeter. Combining the measured rates of Z -> qbarq gamma decays with the total rate of hadronic Z decays permits the simultaneous determination of the widths of the Z into up- and down-type quarks. The values obtained, with total errors, were Gamma u = 300 ^{+19}_{-18} MeV and Gamma d = 381 ^{+12}_{-12} MeV.
