    Beware of the Unexpected: Acute Coronary Thrombosis Following the Mildly Symptomatic COVID-19 Infection and Two Different Therapeutic Options

    COVID-19 infection was declared a pandemic in March 2020 and is responsible for high morbidity and mortality around the globe. Although the most common clinical presentation is respiratory, cardiac complications are common and create new challenges for healthcare. We discuss two mildly symptomatic outpatients with COVID-19 presenting with acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and high coronary thrombus burden without atherosclerotic plaque. Our report describes two different therapeutic approaches that illustrate the challenges encountered in the management of disseminated coronary thrombosis in patients with STEMI and COVID-19. Clinicians should be aware of the high pro-coagulant state caused by COVID-19, even in mildly symptomatic outpatients, and aggressive pharmacological therapy may be an effective alternative treatment option to percutaneous coronary intervention

    Istanbul’s Taksim Square and Gezi Park: the Place of Protest and the Ideology of Place

    May 2013 saw Istanbul witness a massive public demonstration. The incident began on 28 May when a small group of environmental activists tried to save Gezi Park, one of the most iconic green spaces in the Taksim district of central Istanbul. The park dates back to the 1940s and is well-known as public promenade. The modest demonstration was triggered by a government decision to reconstruct a former Ottoman Artillery Barracks. Within a few days, it developed into a violent uprising on an unprecedented scale lasting almost an entire month. Crowds not only gathered in Istanbul but also in many other Turkish cities such as the capital, Ankara. International media broadcast the protests live from Taksim Square turning the Gezi Park protest into an international phenomenon. Today the Park has become a reference point in Turkish politics where almost every issue is linked to the ‘spirit of Gezi’. It made a modest protest over an inner city promenade into a vivid symbol of political opposition. This paper will analyse historically the Taksim Square project and the ideological conflicts it evoked in Turkish society

Bu türlerin seçilmesinin nedeni sahip oldukları sınırlı yayılış alanları ile insan faktörü sonucu yüksek oranda yok olma riski taşımalarıdır. Çok yıllık halofitik K. wagenitzii türünün Tuz Gölü çevresinde 5 lokalitede yayılışı belirlenmiş ve toplam olgun birey sayısı 6458 olarak belirlenmiştir. Yaşam alanları toplamı 36 km2 olmasına karşın yayılış alanı 213 km2 dir. Tarım amaçlı kontrolsüz su kaynaklarının kullanılması önemli bir tehdit faktörüdür. K. wagenitzii türünün tehdit kategorisi IUCN Kırmızı Liste kriterlerine göre EN olarak değerlendirilmiştir. M. adilii marnlı toprakları tercih etmekte ve habitat tipi P. nigra ve meşe ormanlarının yıkımı sonucu oluşan steplerdir. Nallıhan-Beypazarı çevresinde 3 lokaliteden bilinmekte ve olgun birey sayısı 6144 olarak belirlenmiştir. Yaşam alanları toplamı ve yayılış alanı sırasıyla 12 km2 ve 28 km2 dir. Tür üzerindeki baskılar yol inşası ve tarım alanlarının büyümesi, ağaçlandırma çalışmaları ve fabrika kurulumu olup CR kategorisinde değerlendirilmiştir. V. gypsicola marnlı topraklarda yayılmaktadır. Beypazarı-Nallıhan çevresinden 3 lokalite ve Sivirihisar-Eskişehir’de bir lokalite yayılışı bulunmaktadır. Olgun birey sayısı 2755 olarak belirlenmiştir. Yaşam alanları toplamı 16 km2 ve yayılış alanı 269 km2 dir. Aşırı otlatma ve tarım alanlarının büyümesi ile birlikte fabrika kurulumu tür üzerindeki baskılar olup EN olarak değerlendirilmiştir.In this study, we aimed to determine the population size and distribution areas and to re-evaluate IUCN threat categories of Kalidium wagenitzii (Aellen) Freitag amp; G. Kadereit, Muscari adilii M.B. Güner amp; H. Duman and Verbascum gypsicola Vural amp; Aydoğdu, which are endemics of the Central Anatolia region of Turkey. The three species have limited distribution areas and high risk of extinction as a result of human impact. The perennial halophytic species K. wagenitzii was found in 5 localities around Salt Lake (Tuz Gölü) and a total number of 6458 mature individuals were determined. The area of occupancy of the species is 36 km2 and the extent of occurrence is 213 km2. Uncontrolled use of water resources for agricultural purposes is a serious threat factor for the species. Kalidium wagenitzii is listed in EN category according to the IUCN Red List criteria. Muscari adilii prefers marly soils and its habitat type is formed by secondary succession after the destruction of Pinus nigra and oak forests. It is known from 3 localities around Nallıhan-Beypazarı with a population size of 6144 mature individuals. The area of occupancy and the extent of occurrence of the species is 12 km2 and 28 km2, respectively. The pressures on the species are road construction and increase of farmland, afforestation and factory establishment. According to the IUCN Red List criteria, the species is listed in CR category. Verbascum gypsicola is distributed on marly soils. It is known from 3 localities around Nallıhan–Beypazarı and one locality in Sivrihisar-Eskişehir with 2755 mature individuals in total. The area of occupancy of the species is 16 km2 and the extent of occurrence is 269 km2. Overgrazing and expansion of agricultural land, together with factory establishment are the major threats for this species, which is listed as EN in IUCN Red List.

    Relationship Between Heart Rate Recovery and Mean Platelet Volume in Healthy Individuals

    Heart rate recovery index (HRRI) and mean platelet volume (MPV) are two cardiovascular prognostic markers. Low HRRI and high MPV values have been observed in several diseases and conditions. However, the relationship between these two markers is unclear. In this study, the relationship between HRRI and MPV in healthy individuals is examined. Materials and Methods: The exercise tests performed between January and December 2020 were evaluated, and 120 individuals who met the study criteria were included in the present study. An abnormal HRRI was defined as a decrease in heart rate of 12 beats or more until one minute after the peak of exercise. Those with abnormal HRRI were defined as the study group (n=60), and those with normal HRRI as the control group (n=60). Results: A total of 120 healthy individuals were included in the study (54% female; mean age 40.14±7.90 years). High- er MPV values were detected in the study group when compared to the control group (10.27±0.10 fl vs. 9.44±0.12 fl; p<0.001). This significance continued in the logistic regression analysis (odds ratio=3.78, p<0.001). In addition, a moderate negative correlation was found between HRRI and MPV (r=-0.404, p<0.001). The MPV value of 10.25 fl was identified as an effective cutoff point for the prediction of abnormal HRRI (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.758; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.674–0.843). Conclusion: Healthy individuals with abnormal HRRI have elevated MPV levels. Additionally, a negative correlation be- tween MPV and HRRI in healthy subjects indicates a causal relation between MPV and autonomic dysfunction

    Clinical Hematology of the Nose-Horned Viper, Vipera ammodytes (Linnaeus 1758)

    The establishment of hematological profiles of animals taken from their natural environment or kept in captivity has great importance in determining the health status and biology of these species. Pollution in the habitat of reptiles and the impact of various diseases can be determined by analyzing blood parameters. In this study, the clinical hematology (erythrocyte and leukocyte count, erythrocyte types, differential blood formula, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) of three Nose-horned Vipers (Vipera ammodytes) captured from Vize (Kırklareli, Türkiye) were examined. We detected the frequency of nuclear abnormalities in this species for the first time. We also provide the first erythrometric measurements of Vipera ammodytes, and found that the erythrocyte sizes of this species were larger compared to other species in Viperidae. Knowledge of the general health status of animals is important in species conservation action plans and monitoring studies

    Lithostratigraphy and Sedimentological Characteristics of the Calciturbidites of the Babadağ Formation-Tavas Nappe (SW Turkey)

    The Lycian Nappes contain slices of ophiolites and sedimentary rocks of various ages that crop out in SW Turkey. They evolved and were emplaced under the effect of the Late CretaceousMiocene compressional regime. The Tavas Nappe is part of the Lycian Nappes and contains Jurassic-Eocene sediments. The Babadağ Formation, forming the middle part of the Tavas Nappe, is composed of limestone at the base and various sized calciturbidites with chert intercalations in the upper part. The Standard Microfacies Classification (SMF of FLÜGEL, 2004) indicates that the entire unit was deposited mainly in a deep-shelf environment (Facies Zone – FZ-2), deep-sea (FZ-1), toe of slope (FZ-3) and on the continental slope (FZ-4). Calcite and quartz dominate the bulk mineralogy of the calciturbidites with higher SiO2 and CaO weight percentages than other major oxides. Additionally, the presence of Na2O, K2O, Al2O3, MgO, TiO2 and Fe2O3 is associated with the local sediment input. Tectonism and sea level fluctuations were the main triggering factors of the changes in the original depositional environment of the Babadağ Formation. Additionally, grain size and the amount of sediment input control the calciturbidite type and extension. Si enriched water circulation and Si and Ca substitution were responsible for the abundant chert formation during diagenesis of the units. Post depositional tectonic activities during transportation and emplacement of the nappes resulted in calcite filled cracks that cut both the calciturbidites and cherts. Study of the different nappe slices provides valuable information about syn- and post- depositional changes of the lithostratigraphic units

    Variation in body size and age structure of stellagama stellio (L., 1758) (Reptilia: Agamidae) from Turkey

    WOS: 000334089600008Age and body size of 81 Stellagama stellio (syn. Laudakia stellio) specimens from five regions of Turkey were studied using skeletochronology. Lines of arrested growth (LAGs) in phalanges were used to estimate the age. Snouth vent length (SVL) ranged between 90.05 - 133.14 mm (mean: 109.58 +/- 10.26) in males and 86.24 - 130.43 mm (mean: 105.83 +/- 10.68) in females. Age ranged between 2-9 (mean: 5.34 +/- 1.63) in females and 3-10 years (mean: 5.72 +/- 1.82) in males. We did not observe any significant difference in terms of age and SVL between sexes. Intersexual differences in body size were male-biased (SDI =-0.03) but this relation was not statistically significant. A significant difference between the lowland (below 800 m) and mountain (above 800 m) populations was found in respect of SVL, with mountain individuals being larger than the lowland. A significant age difference between lowland and mountain populations was not found. A significant positive correlation was found between age and SVL both in males and females. Individuals reached maturity between 2 and 3 years
