Do The Sick Retire Early? Chronic Illness, Asset Accumulation, and Early Retirement.

and an anonymous referee for helpful comments.Our objective is to determine how chronic illness affects asset accumulation and retirement. Previous studies have found that poor health leads to early retirement, but those studies failed to look at the indirect impact of chronic illness on retirement. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, we define an illness as chronic if the individual reports having asthma, cancer, heart disease, stroke or diabetes for four or more years. We first estimate how a chronic illness influences asset accumulation. We then estimate how asset accumulation and current poor health influence retirement. We observe that the vast majority of the chronically ill population do not report their general health to be poor nor do they report functional limitations in activities of daily living. Nevertheless, our results indicate that chronic illness leads these people to accumulate fewer assets during their working years and consequently retire later. Neither researchers nor policy-makers discussing the many critical issues surrounding illness and retirement have addressed this issue
Propiedades antioxidantes de algunas plantas que crecen salvajes en Turquía
In this study, the antioxidant activity of 50% aqueous methanol extracts of 38 plants growing in the Afyonkarahisar province of Turkey were evaluated by various antioxidant assay, including free radical scavenging, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging and metal (Fe2+) chelating activities. The methanolic fruit extracts of the Cornus and Morus species (H2O2 and DPPH scavenging activities, Fe2+ chelating activity) and the methanolic leaf extracts of the Mentha species (DPPH scavenging activities) examined in the assay showed the strongest activities. These antioxidant properties depended on the concentration of samples.En este estudio, la actividad antioxidante de extractos metanólicos al 50% en agua de 38 plantas que crecen en la provincia turca de Afyonkarahisar fueron evaluados con algunos ensayos antioxidantes, incluyendo la actividad capta-dora de radicales libres y de peróxido de oxígeno (H2O2) y la actividad quelatante de metales (Fe2+). Los extractos metanólicos de frutas de las especies Cornus y Morus (actividades captadoras de H2O2 y DPPH y actividad quelatante de Fe2+) y los extractos metanólicos de hojas de especies de Mentha (actividad captadora de DPPH) son los que mostraron una actividad mayor. Investigation of Erosion Corrosion Caused by Drinking Water in the Faucet with Computational Fluid Dynamics
In this study, the reason for erosion-corrosion of drinking or mains water in the faucet was investigated by computational fluid dynamics. Pipes used in homes, the service sector, and industry are responsible for transporting different types of fluids from one place to another. Considering the faucet design, the SolidWorks program was used for 3D studies. In-faucet flow analyses were performed using Ansys Fluent, a computational fluid dynamics program based on the finite volume method. In the analyses, lime particles were chosen. At the end of the analysis, the amount of erosion in the faucet was obtained
Optical Imaging and Spectroscopic Observation of the Galactic Supernova Remnant G85.9-0.6
Optical CCD imaging with H and [SII] filters and spectroscopic
observations of the galactic supernova remnant G85.9-0.6 have been performed
for the first time. The CCD image data are taken with the 1.5m Russian-Turkish
Telescope (RTT150) at TUBITAK National Observatory (TUG) and spectral data are
taken with the Bok 2.3 m telescope on Kitt Peak, AZ.
The images are taken with narrow-band interference filters H, [SII]
and their continuum. [SII]/H ratio image is performed. The ratio
obtained from [SII]/H is found to be 0.42, indicating that the
remnant interacts with HII regions. G85.9-0.6 shows diffuse-shell morphology.
[SII] average flux ratio is calculated from the
spectra, and the electron density is obtained to be 395 . From
[OIII]/H ratio, shock velocity has been estimated, pre-shock density of
, explosion energy of ergs,
interstellar extinction of , and neutral hydrogen column density

QT and JT dispersion in children with familial mediterranean fever
Objectives: This study aims to determine QT dispersion and JT dispersion, and their relationship with conventional echocardiography values in a group of children with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF). Patients and methods: The study included 48 FMF patients (26 males, 22 females, mean age 11.10±3.42 years; range 5 to 18 years) as the FMF patients and 31 healthy children (17 males, 14 females, mean age 9.61±2.83 years; range 5 to 17 years) as the healthy controls. Electrocardiography and conventional echocardiography were performed on the FMF patients and healthy controls. Both groups were evaluated with a standard 12-lead electrocardiography. QT, JT and RR distances were measured in both groups. The corrected QT (QTc) and corrected JT (JTc) were calculated. QTcd and corrected JT dispersion (JTcd) were detected. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the FMF patients and healthy controls in terms of RR, QT, QTd, QTcd, JT, JTc, JTd, and JTcd measurements and echocardiography parameters. QTc value was higher in the FMF patients than the healthy controls. Conclusion: QTc value indicates increased ventricular sensitivity and is an important marker of cardiovascular mortality. It has an important effect on sudden cardiac death and arrhythmia. Our study results suggest that electrocardiographic monitoring may be useful in patients with FMF
Suzaku Observations of Ejecta-Dominated Galactic Supernova Remnant G346.6-0.2
We present here the results of the X-ray analysis of Galactic supernova
remnant G346.6-0.2 observed with {\it Suzaku}. K-shell emission lines of Mg,
Si, S, Ca and Fe are detected clearly for the first time. Strong emission lines
of Si and S imply that X-ray emission nature of G346.6-0.2 is ejecta-dominated.
The ejecta-dominated emission is well fitted with a combined model consisting
of thermal plasma in non-equilibrium ionization and a non-thermal component,
which can be regarded as synchrotron emission with a photon index of
. Absorbing column density of is obtained from the best-fitting implying a high-density medium,
high electron temperature of keV, and ionization timescale
of indicating that this
remnant may be far from full ionization equilibrium. The relative abundances
from the ejecta show that the remnant originates from a Type Ia supernova

Comparative flavonoid profile of orange (Citrus sinensis) flavedo and albedo extracted by conventional and emerging techniques using UPLC-IMS-MS, chemometrics and antioxidant effects
Introduction: Citrus fruits are one of the most frequently counterfeited processed products in the world. In the juice production alone, the peels, divided into flavedo and albedo, are the main waste product. The extracts of this by-product are enriched with many bioactive substances. Newer extraction techniques generally have milder extraction conditions with simultaneous improvement of the extraction process. Methods: This study presents a combinatorial approach utilizing data-independent acquisition-based ion mobility spectrometry coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. Integrating orthogonal collision cross section (CCS) data matching simultaneously improves the confidence in metabolite identification in flavedo and albedo tissues from Citrus sinensis. Furthermore, four different extraction approaches [conventional, ultrasonic, High Hydrostatic Pressure (HHP) and Pulsed Electric Field (PEF)] with various optimized processing conditions were compared in terms of antioxidant effects and flavonoid profile particularly polymethoxy flavones (PMFs). Results: A total number of 57 metabolites were identified, 15 of which were present in both flavedo and albedo, forming a good qualitative overlapping of distributed flavonoids. For flavedo samples, the antioxidant activity was higher for PEF and HHP treated samples compared to other extraction methods. However, ethyl acetate extract exhibited the highest antioxidant effects in albedo samples attributed to different qualitative composition content rather than various quantities of same metabolites. The optimum processing conditions for albedo extraction using HHP and PEF were 200 MPa and 15 kJ/kg at 10 kV, respectively. While, HHP at medium pressure (400 MPa) and PEF at 15 kJ/kg/3 kV were the optimum conditions for flavedo extraction. Conclusion: Chemometric analysis of the dataset indicated that orange flavedo can be a valid source of soluble phenolic compounds especially PMFs. In order to achieve cross-application of production, future study should concentrate on how citrus PMFs correlate with biological engineering techniques such as breeding, genetic engineering, and fermentation engineering

In this paper, we give the definitions and characterizations of quaternionic
Salkowski, quaternionic anti-Salkowski and quaternionic similar curves in the
Euclidean spaces E^3 and E^4. We obtain relationships between these curves and
some special quaternionic curves such as quaternionic slant helices and

{\it Suzaku} observation of Galactic supernova remnant CTB 37A (G348.5+0.1)
We present here the results of the observation of CTB 37A obtained with the
X-ray Imaging Spectrometer onboard the {\it Suzaku} satellite. The X-ray
spectrum of CTB 37A is well fitted by two components, a single-temperature
ionization equilibrium component (VMEKAL) with solar abundances, an electron
temperature of keV, absorbing column density of and a power-law component with photon
index of . The X-ray spectrum of CTB 37A is characterized by
clearly detected K-shell emission lines of Mg, Si, S, and Ar. The plasma with
solar abundances supports the idea that the X-ray emission originates from the
shocked interstellar material. The ambient gas density, and age of the remnant
are estimated to be and
yr, respectively. The center-filling X-ray emission
surrounded by a shell-like radio structure and other X-ray properties indicate
that this remnant would be a new member of mixed-morphology supernova remnant
class
Evaluation of silver content and antibacterial activities of silver loaded fiber/cotton blended textile fabrics
The aims of this work were to analyze the antibacterial activity and laundering durability of the silver loaded cellulosic fiber/cotton blended antibacterial textile fabrics, to quantify the silver content present in fabrics, and to examine the relationship between the antibacterial activity and silver content. For this aims knitting fabrics consisting of SeaCell® Active, which is the cellulosic fiber incorporated with seaweed and silver ions, and cotton fibers blended with five different ratios were produced. All fabric samples bleached and washed 60 times. The antibacterial efficiency was evaluated according to AATCC 100-1999 method after each ten laundry cycles. Silver content of the fabrics were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Fiber and fabric surfaces were investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) views. Antibacterial tests showed that good antibacterial activity can be achieved after several washings even with 3% of SeaCell ® Active fibers in blended fabrics.
