We propose a country classification of economic growth currency crisis consequences based on the entropic analysis of the real exchange rate. We show that this ranking is highly correlated with the annual minimum rate of growth, a proxy used to quantify real currency crisis effects.currency crises; entropy; growth effects of currency crises

IF AC Intelligent Components and Instruments for Control Applications, Budapest, Hungary, 1994This paper presents a local navigation method based on generalized predictive control. A modified cost function to avoid moving and static obstacles is presented. An Extended Kaiman Filter is proposed to predict the motions of the obstacles. A Neural Network implementation of this method is analysed. Simulation results are shown.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología TAP93-0408Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología TAP93-058

Reactivity indexes for different geometries of palladium leads

    Get PDF
Electronic transport through metallic break junctions or molecules is clearly dependent not only on the electronic structure of the central nanodevice connecting the leads, but also the shape and crystalline orientation of the contacts which can define the possible conduction channels. In this work we examine different geometries of contacts of palladium characterizing them through global and local reactivity indexes as electrophilicity, chemical hardness and Fukui functions. In molecules, these indicators are essentially defined by the energies of the frontier molecular orbitals and in solids they are related with the local and partial density of states. We use for this purpose an ab-initio based code (FIREBALL), applied to plane contacts with (001) fcc faces and also pyramidal tips grown following a (001) and (111) packaging. The results allow us to have an insight about the chemical features of this type of nanojunctions.Fil: Gómez Carrillo, Sandra Carolina. Universidad Nacional del Litoral. Nuevas tecnologías y aprendizaje matemático en niños con síndrome de down: generalización para la autonomía

    Get PDF
The present study aims to explore the effect of using multimedia material on the learning and generalization of mathematical contents in Down syndrome children. Two groups of children were trained in the principles of counting and cardinality. One group learned by means of a computer-assisted teaching and the other did it by using a paperand-pencil-based methodology. After the teaching process, both groups were assessed with a task pretending a shopping setting. The results strongly suggest an effect of multimedia teaching to facilitate the generalization of the concepts and skills learned by Down syndrome children

The speciation of inorganic carbon in estuarine and interstitial waters

A calculation procedure to obtain pH, total alkalinity and concentration of inorganic carbon, based on the application of Gran functions, is described. An iterative program was used to optimise the electrode standard potential (E₀) and inorganic carbon concentration. Alkalinities higher than 15 mM were detected in interstitial waters from sediments collected in Cadiz Bay. A contribution of 20 % was associated with those acid-based species other than inorganic carbon. Speciation of inorganic carbon in estuarine waters was characterised using laboratory simulation techniques. Total carbonate and alkalinity, as well as inorganic carbon concentration, present conservative behaviour in the mixing process of waters having different salinities.

Biocatalytic Synthesis of Polyglycerol Polyricinoleate: A Comparison of Different Commercial Lipases

This paper describes the studies carried out to select the most suitable lipase as catalyst for the esterification of polyglycerol with polyricinoleic acid to yield polyglicerol polyricinoleate (PGPR), a value-added, bio-based food emulsifier. The enzymes assayed were lipases from Rhizopus arrhizus, Rhizopus oryzae and Mucor javanicus, previously selected because of their suitable activity and moderate cost. First, the reaction was catalyzed by free lipases in a batch reactor and the influence of different operating conditions (initial water content, amount of enzyme and temperature) on the progress of the reaction was studied. Next, the three lipases were immobilized by physical adsorption on the anion exchange resin, Lewatit MonoPlus MP 64, providing derivatives with a high activity and stability. Recovery of the immobilized derivative from the reaction medium was conducted with very good yields (≥ 99 %) and no loss of activity of the derivative with successive uses was proved. Finally, a high performance reactor, operating at low pressure and a dry atmosphere, was used to synthesise PGPR using the immobilized enzymes. Both Rhizopus arrhizus and Rhizopus oryzae lipases allowed the production of a PGPR which fulfils the “specific purity criteria on food additives other than colours and sweeteners” established by the Commission of the European Communities (AV ≤ 6 mg KOH/g), with an acid value of 4.91 and 5.31 mg KOH/g respectively

Ellagic acid as a tool to limit the diabetes burden: Updated evidence

Oxidative stress contributes not only to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) but also to diabetic vascular complications. It follows that antioxidants might contribute to limiting the diabetes burden. In this review we focus on ellagic acid (EA), a compound that can be obtained upon intestinal hydrolysis of dietary ellagitannins, a family of polyphenols naturally found in several fruits and seeds. There is increasing research on cardiometabolic effects of ellagitannins, EA, and urolithins (EA metabolites). We updated research conducted on these compounds and (I) glucose metabolism; (II) inflammation, oxidation, and glycation; and (III) diabetic complications. We included studies testing EA in isolation, extracts or preparations enriched in EA, or EA-rich foods (mostly pomegranate juice). Animal research on the topic, entirely conducted in murine models, mostly reported glucose-lowering, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-glycation effects, along with prevention of micro-and macrovascular diabetic complications. Clinical research is incipient and mostly involved non-randomized and low-powered studies, which confirmed the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of EA-rich foods, but without conclusive results on glucose control. Overall, EA-related compounds might be potential agents to limit the diabetes burden, but well-designed human randomized controlled trials are needed to fill the existing gap between experimental and clinical research.A.S.-V. is recipient of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III Miguel Servet fellowship (grant CP II17/00029)
