    The range and extent of the Vallesian Crisis (Late Miocene): new prospects based on the micromammal record from the Vallès-Penedès basin (Catalonia, Spain)

    The Vallesian Crisis was initially recognized as a local event, which implied the extinction of certain rodent and artiodactyl genera coincidingwith the early/late Vallesian boundary (at 9.7 Ma). Following works increased the range and extent of this event to encompass allEurope and involve a great number of mammal taxa. Here, we analyze the Vallesian rodent and insectivore record of the Vallès-Penedèsbasin (Catalonia, Spain), where the crisis was first recognized. We show that the quality of the record before the crisis is comparativelymuch better than afterwards so diversity appears inflated and extinction rates are overrated. Accordingly, we used inferred taxon rangesand rarefaction to calculate new diversity measures independent of sample size. These measures virtually eliminate the Vallesian Crisis,showing that diversity somewhat decreased during the earliest late Vallesian and soon recovered afterwards. This is because it cannot bediscarded that several rare taxa, customarily said to have disappeared during the crisis, are in fact present. Amongst the rodents and insectivores,these taxa include genera that are generally rare and show a discontinuous record during the early Vallesian. These are presumedspecialists adapted to humid forested environments such as flying squirrels, beavers or certain dormice, most of them being only recordedwhen the sample size is large enough. Alternatively, these genera may have been associated to very specific habitats which, for an unknownreason, are not sampled during the late Vallesian. Our results cast serious doubts on the very existence of the Vallesian Crisis suggesting thatrather than an abrupt event a series of extinctions occurred during a longer time span. It has not been evaluated whether the same patternis observed in the case of large mammals and in other areas. However, our results show that biases introduced by the quality of the recordneed to be taken into account when assessing the extent of the event.La Crisis Vallesiense fue inicialmente definida como un fenómeno local que implicó la desaparición de ciertos géneros de roedores y artio­dáctilos coincidiendo con el límite entre Vallesiense inferior y superior (hace 9.7 Ma). Trabajos posteriores ampliaron el ámbito y alcance de este evento hasta incluir toda Europa e implicar un gran número de taxones de mamíferos. En este trabajo analizamos el registro Vallesiense de roedores e insectívoros de la cuenca del Vallès-Penedès (Cataluña, España), donde la crisis fue reconocida por primera vez. Se muestra que la calidad del registro fósil con anterioridad a la crisis es comparativamente mucho mejor que la de después de modo que se magnifica la diversidad y se exageran las tasas de extinción. Por lo tanto, se ha utilizado rarefacción y se han inferido rangos estratigráficos a fin de calcular nuevas medidas de diversidad independientes del tamaño de la muestra. Estas medidas eliminan virtualmente la Crisis Vallesiense, mostrando que la diversidad disminuyó a principios del Vallesiense superior para recuperarse poco después a finales de esta edad. Esto es debido a que no podemos descartar que diversos taxones poco abundantes, normalmente citados como víctimas de la crisis, estuvieran de hecho presentes. Entre los roedores e insectívoros dichos taxones incluyen géneros que son generalmente raros y que muestran un registro discontinuo durante el Vallesiense inferior. Se trata de supuestos especialistas adaptados a ambientes boscosos húmedos tales como ardillas voladoras, castores o ciertos lirones, la mayoría de los cuales sólo se encuentran cuando el tamaño de la muestra es lo suficientemente grande. Alternativamente, estos géneros podrían haber estado asociados a hábitats muy específicos que por algún motivo no están siendo muestrea­dos durante el Vallesiense superior. Nuestros resultados cuestionan seriamente la existencia de la Crisis Vallesiense y sugieren que en lugar de un evento abrupto podría tratarse de una serie de extinciones que habrían sucedido durante un período más largo. Queda pendiente de evaluación si el mismo patrón se observa en el caso de los grandes mamíferos y en otras áreas. No obstante nuestros resultados muestran que se deberían tomar en consideración las desviaciones introducidas por la calidad del registro al analizar el alcance de este evento

    Optimization of laser-firing processes for silicon-heterojunction solar-cell back contacts

    One of the key steps to achieve high efficiencies in amorphous/crystalline silicon photovoltaic structures is to design low-ohmic-resistance backcontacts with good passivation in the rear part of the cell. A well known approach to achieve this goal is to use laser-fired contact (LFC) processes in which a metal layer is fired through the dielectric to define good contacts with the semiconductor. However, and despite the fact that this approach has demonstrated to be extremely successful, there is still enough room for process improvement with an appropriate optimization. In this paper, a study focused on the optimal adjustment of the irradiation parameters to produce laser-fired contacts in a-Si:H/c-Si heterojunctionsolarcells is presented. We used samples consisting of crystalline-silicon (c-Si) wafers together with a passivation layer of intrinsic hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H(i)) deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical deposition (PECVD). Then, an aluminum layer was evaporated on both sides, the thickness of this layer varied from 0.2 to 1 μm in order to identify the optimal amount of Al required to create an appropriate contact. A q-switched Nd:YVO4laser source, λ = 532 nm, was used to locally fire the aluminum through the thin a-Si:H(i)-layers to form the LFC. The effects of laser fluences were analyzed using a comprehensive morphological and electrical characterization

    Macroevolutionary and macroecological response of Iberian rodents to late Neogene climatic oscillations and events

    Biozones are routinely used for chronological purposes, but their nature is seldomly questioned. Here, we attempt to find the evolutionary-ecological basis for Iberian rodent biozones for the interval 8.5-2 Ma based on currently available paleontological, stratigraphic and paleoclimatic information. Our comparison of biozone boundary age uncertainty intervals to records of marine SST, δ18O and δ13C, terrestrial hydrological proxies and astronomical parameters suggests an orbitally forced climatic origin for the majority of biozones. Zone boundary ages during the late Miocene are mostly associated with humidity changes during 1.2-Myr obliquity nodes and 405-kyr eccentricity minima. Tectonics and strong regional cooling may additionally explain faunal change during the Messinian (7-5 Ma). A partly reversed pattern characterizes most Pliocene zone boundaries, which are mostly associated with wetter conditions during obliquity nodes and 405-kyr eccentricity maxima. A third configuration culminates in the early Pleistocene and consists of the combination of strong obliquity amplitude maxima and 2.4-Myr eccentricity minima. It is suggested that larger-scale, European Neogene mammal (MN) units have an astronomical basis as well, with an important role of 2.4-Myr eccentricity cycle and the 1.2-Myr obliquity cycle, with the latter becoming especially important after the mid-Miocene cooling (∼14 Ma). Whereas rodent events on the Iberian Peninsula during the late Miocene are shaped by replacements within resident communities dominated by dry-adapted clades of true mice (Murinae) and hamsters (Cricetinae), transitions during the cooler Pliocene involve invasions of newly emerging Eurasian clades of 'microtoid hamsters' and voles (Arvicolinae) preferring wetter and cooler environments. A new model of stepwise clade displacement is proposed in which the combination of long-period Milankovitch cycles and gradual long-term climatic change allows for the periodic functioning of migration corridors, along which increasingly pervasive dispersal events by members of new clades cause the gradual extinction of old clades

    Fatigue in laser shock peened open-hole thin aluminium specimens

    An experimental study was performed in order to determine the influence of the sequence of operations on the effectiveness of Laser Shock Peening (LSP) treatment in increasing the fatigue performances of open-hole aluminium specimens. Residual stress measurements, fractographic analysis and FEM analysis were performed, indicating the presence of compressive residual stresses on the surface of the treated specimens and tensile residual stresses in the mid-section along the thickness of the specimens. Negative effects on fatigue lives were encountered on the specimens with the hole already present, while positive effect were observed in specimens in which the hole was drilled after LSP treatment. These results indicate that LSP can be a good solution for “in production” application, in which open holes are to be drilled after the LSP treatment. The application in which LSP is used “in service” on structures with pre-existing cut-outs, has proven to be impracticable in the investigated configuration

    Aislamiento de un extracto de BMP y estudio anatomopatológico del fenómeno de inducción ósea tras su implante en defectos óseos

    El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar el potencial osteogénico de la proteína morfogenética ósea (BMP) en la reparación de grandes defectos diafisarios. Además, se investiga la acción coadyuvante de la fibronectina (FN). La BMP fue extraída a partir de hueso cortical bovino. Se utilizaron un total de 108 ratas Sprague Dawley. En cada animal, se resecó un segmento de diáfisis femoral de 1.5 cm, siendo inmovilizado el defecto óseo con una aguja en omega. Se rellenó el defecto implantando 25 mg de BMP con o sin 0.5 mg de FN en una cápsula de gelatina (36 animales en ambos grupos). Los resultados se compararon con los obtenidos en otro grupo (36 animales) en el que sólo se implantó FN que sirvió como grupo control. El proceso de reparación se evaluó mediante métodos histológicos y ultraestructurales. La aparición del fenómeno de inducción ósea con reconstrucción del defecto óseo fue mayor en el grupo con implante de BMP más FN (23 animales, 64%) que en el grupo en el que sólo se implantó BMP (20 animales, 56%). Ningún animal del grupo control manifestaba signos de inducción ósea.The aim of the present work was to evaluate the osteogenic potential of Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) for reparation of large segmental bone defects. In addition, the coadjuvant efect of fibronectin (FN) was investigated. BMP was partially purified from bovine cortical bone. A total of 108 Sprague Dawley rats were used in the experiment. Diaphyseal segments of the femur (1.5 cm) were removed in each animal, manteinant the bone defect with a wire. A gelatine capsula containing 25 mg of BMP without or with 0.5 mg of FN, were implanted into the bone defect (36 animal in each group). Results were compared to those obtained in a control group (36 animals) in which FN alone was implanted. The bone repair process was assessed by histologic and ultrastructural methods. Bone induction with reconstruction of the defect was found more of ten in the group with both BMP and FN implanted (23 animals, 64%) than in the group with BMP implant alone (20 animals, 56%). Animals of the control group showed no bone induction. The results suggest that BMP augments the capacity of the host bed to sucessfully regenerate large segmental bone defects. FN seens to increase bone induction. This protein migth stabilize BMP locally improving contact between BMP and the surrounding cells

    A new rodent chronology for the late Neogene of Spain

    The number of late Neogene Spanish micromammal-containing continental sections with a correlation to the Geomagnetic Time Scale is steadily growing. Nonetheless, well-calibrated sections with dense micromammal records are still rare, biostratigraphic correlations between basins are not straightforward, and ages of uncalibrated sites are poorly constrained. Here, we aim at improving the chronology of Iberian micromammal sections and sites for the interval 8.5–2 Ma by: (i) analyzing qualitative and quantitative similarities between rodent assemblages and turnover in the different basins, (ii) formulating a system of fifteen Iberian assemblage biozones, and (iii) constraining the ages of zone boundaries, assuming isochroneity across basins. Age uncertainty ranges for most known Iberian micromammal sites are obtained by combining regional biozone boundary ages with local magnetostratigraphic records, sedimentation rates and/or evolutionary rates. In addition, our results include new, integrated stratigraphic records from the Jumilla-La Celia and Teruel Basins, which are used to constrain the thus far poorly dated interval covering the latest Tortonian and earliest Messinian (8–7 Ma)
